Abstract

Many EFL students feel that speaking in English is the most difficult skill, So this triggers the emergence of speaking anxiety among students. This study aims to analyze the level of anxiety in speaking English as well as the factors that influence speaking anxiety among the 11th grade students of SMKN 1 Stabat. The study used a qualitative approach with random sampling technique in class XI of Beauty and Spa Management which totaled 27 students. Google Form was used to distribute the questionnaire, which is based on the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz et al. (1986) and has 31 question items formatted in a five-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2007, along with interviews and observations. The majority of students reported experiencing moderate levels of anxiety, with test anxiety being the most common.  According to Horwtz et al. (1986), the elements of student speaking anxiety are divided into three categories: test anxiety, communicative fear, and fear of receiving poor judgment. A homogeneous and supportive learning environment, where all students come from the same major and gender, plays an important role in reducing anxiety levels. The negative impact of anxiety on students' speaking performance was not significant as students were able to manage their anxiety well. This finding confirms the importance of creating a conducive learning environment to increase students' confidence and active participation in English language learning.

Abstract

Inclusive education requires a learning approach that can accommodate the diversity of students' abilities in developing English literacy skills. However, the limitation of adaptive pedagogical models is still a major obstacle in inclusive schools, especially bridging the abilities gap between regular students and students with special needs. This study aims to theoretically analyse the GITTW (Group Investigation Think Talk Write) learning model and develop a conceptual framework for its application in strengthening English literacy. This research approach uses a literature review and preliminary interviews with teachers and inclusion coordinators at SMA Muhammadiyah 10 Surabaya. Theoretically, the GITTW model is combined from the collaborative approach of Group Investigation and the reflective-linguistic approach of Think Talk Write that is in line with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles where the students can engage, receive, and express learning. Initial findings indicate GITTW is considered potential to increase students’ active participation, reflective understanding, and written expression adaptively. Teachers positively responded this model flexibility to accommodate students with special needs, including dyslexia, slow learners, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and concentration disorders. This study provides a theoretical basis and direction for developing more inclusive, structured, and transformative English learning practices.

Abstract

This review research explores some benefits that purposed by the integration of Artificial Intelligence in EFL classroom, mainly in improving students’ engagement and involvement in the learning process so that their anxiety while speaking could be dismissed . Some AI tools that could be used in teaching speaking like Intelligent Tutoring Systems, speech recognition technologies, Chatsbot, Kahoot and AI-based feedback mechanism which encourage students engagement and self-confidence in speaking practice. Research from various experts, such as (Turner & Patrick, 2004), Karim et al., 2023; Kholis, 2021; Samad & Ismail, 2020). Mardhiah, Ainol, et al (2024) show that the integration AI in English learning and teaching could improve the students’ activeness and engagement and allow them to practice more that create the enjoyable learning setting without feeling anxiety.  However, there are some challenges and constraints in applying Artificial Intelligence such as the limitation of natural adaptation and communication in the real context, less direct corrective feedback, and less human interaction. To solve these problems, combining the strengths of AI with teacher traditional methods, offers a richer and more adaptable learning experience that better meets the diverse needs of students.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of the shadowing technique on improving the speaking skills of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Palu, particularly in terms of accuracy and comprehensibility. Shadowing is a learning method that involves listening to and immediately repeating the speech of a native speaker to develop natural pronunciation, intonation, and sentence structure. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model. The subjects were 27 eleventh-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was an oral speaking test that focused on two assessment aspects: accuracy and comprehensibility. The results showed an increase in the students’ average score from 42.12 in the pre-test to 62.03 in the post-test. The hypothesis testing using a t-test revealed that the t-count value (3.936) was higher than the t-table value (1.706) at a 0.05 significance level, indicating that the hypothesis was accepted. This means that the shadowing technique was effective in improving students’ speaking skills, especially in helping them overcome difficulties in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Based on these findings, the shadowing technique can be considered an effective and interactive strategy for teaching speaking in English language classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to test the effectiveness of the PPP (Presentation, Practice, and Production) method in improving descriptive text writing skills among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri Bandung. The PPP method is implemented through three stages: Presentation, Practice, and Production. In the Presentation stage, the teacher delivers the material in a structured manner. In the Practice stage, students engage in guided writing practice. Whereas in the Production stage, students produce writing independently. This study uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design, employing the one-group pretest-posttest technique. Data were collected through descriptive writing tests before and after the implementation of the PPP method. The research results show a significant improvement in students' writing skills after the implementation of the PPP method. The average pretest score of 56.94 increased to 68.85 on the posttest. Statistical analysis using the paired t-test showed a significance value (p < 0.05), which means that the PPP method is effective in improving students' descriptive writing skills. Based on these findings, it is concluded that the PPP method is an effective teaching strategy and is recommended for use in teaching descriptive text writing.
