Abstract

Abstract

Disruption in higher education due to the impact of Covid-19 pandemic has forced universities to adapt to distance learning by utilizing information and communication technology. At the same time, the quality of learning must be maintained and prioritized. The problem discussed in this study is that there is no standard for quality assurance of distance learning in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic for higher education. This study aims to (1) analyze policies related to distance learning quality assurance and (2) analyze the efforts made by universities in implementing quality assurance. This study is desk research where the analysis is carried out in two stages. The first stage is to review policies related to distance learning quality assurance, and the second stage is to analyze the implementation of quality assurance in three state universities and five private universities. The results show that (a) the implementation of the Internal Quality Assurance System varies, and (b) there is no standard that can be used as a reference to ensure the quality of distance learning. This study concludes that the strengthening of internal quality assurance system through the cycle of determination, implementation, evaluation, control, and improvement can be used as an alternative to quality assurance for distance learning in higher education.

Abstract

The use of online media to facilitate distant learning during the pandemic has become one of the solutions that can be implemented to support the government's policy of reducing crowds in public spaces. In this case, students at the University of Lampung's Faculty of Teacher Training and Education benefit from an online management system called Virtual Class Unila. This platform is intended for students to use to access resources, download learning modules, and participate in classroom discussions. The Virtual Class was created to assist students with distance learning. However, since the initial implementation of Virtual Class at the start of the pandemic in early 2020, both positive and negative perceptions about its use have emerged. As a result, we were encouraged to ascertain diverse perceptions regarding the use of this sophisticated learning management system among students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Lampung. This study employed a quantitative approach, collecting data via a scaled survey questionnaire. The target participants were 272 students from various departments who were asked to complete a survey regarding their perceptions of the implementation of Virtual Class. The findings of this study are expected to be beneficial for the future maintenance and development of Virtual Class, as well as for determining the optimal method of conducting online learning.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the critical thinking and comprehension of literary texts of high school students in Bandar Lampung. The study was designed in an ex-post de facto setting with critical thinking and academic potential identified through students’ literary text comprehension. Three instruments were used in the study, i.e., an adapted reading, academic potential, and critical thinking assessment, involving tasks on summary, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The study reveals a noteworthy impact of explicit critical thinking training on students’ proficiency in literary text reading, alongside a significant interplay between the students’ critical thinking taxonomy and academic potential. The findings suggest the importance of a model for imparting high-order cognitive abilities, such as inferential, analytical, and synthetic skills, and active learning methods through experimentation that can be integrated into Indonesian high schools’ academic curriculums.
