Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini dilarbelakangi oleh banyaknya permaslahan toleransi beragama disebabkan karena menafsirkan ayat-ayat al-Qur’an secara parsial tanpa melihat kondisi sosio-historis ayat tersebut dan konteks yang terjadi saat ayat tersebut diturnkan, sehingga penafsiran yang demikian dapat menimbulkan prilaku yang anarkis. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menafsirkan ayat-ayat dalam QS. al-Mumtahanah [60]:8, QS. al-Hujurat [49]:13, dan QS. al-Kāfirūn [109]: 1-6 dengan menngunakan metode double movement Fazlur Rahman untuk mengetahui pesan al-Qur’an melalui teks juga konteks sosio-historis tentang toleransi beragama. Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan ilmu tafsir dan metode double movement Fazlur Rahman dalam menganalisa arti dan makna ayat baik makna spesifik maupun makna umum yang terdapat pada QS. al-Mumtahanah [28]:8, QS. al-Hujurat [26]: 13 dan QS. al-Kāfirūn [30]: 1-6. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Islam memberikan ruang gerak yang luas untuk berteman dengan non muslim yang tidak mengusir kita dari negeri dan selama pertemanan tersebut tidak merusak akidah, al-Qur’an juga menjelaskan bahwa perbedaan merupakan sunatullah yang harus dijaga dengan baik. Dalam QS. al-Mumtahanah [60]: 8, QS. al-Hujurat [49]: 13 dan QS. al-Kāfirūn [109]: 1-6 terdapat nilai moral dalam toleransi beragama yaitu: Jalinlah pertemanan kepada siapapun, berlaku adil terhadap siapapun, dewasalah dalam menghadapi perbedaan, dan hidupkan sikap untuk saling menghargai serta menghormati segala perbedaan yang ada. Jadikan perbedaan sebagai jalan untuk membangun kesatuan. Kata Kunci: Al-Qur’an, Toleransi Beragama, Double Movement, Fazlur Rahman Abstract This research is motivated by the many problems of religious tolerance caused by interpreting the verses of the Qur'an partially without considering the socio-historical conditions of the verses and the context that occurred when the verses were revealed so that such interpretations can lead to unruly behavior. This article aims to interpret the verses in QS. al-Mumtahanah [60]: 8, QS. al-Hujurat [49]: 13, and QS. al-Kāfirūn [109]: 1-6 by using Fazlur Rahman's double movement method to find out the message of the Qur'an through the text and the socio-historical context about religious tolerance. In conducting this research, the author uses the science of interpretation approach and Fazlur Rahman's double movement method to analyze the meaning and significance of the verses and the specific and general meanings contained in QS. al-Mumtahanah [28]: 8, QS. al-Hujurat [26]: 13 and QS. al-Kāfirūn [30]: 1-6. The results of this study indicate that Islam provides ample room to make friends with non-Muslims who do not expel us from the country. As long as friendship does not damage the faith, the Qur'an also explains that differences are a sunnatullah that must be maintained properly. Abstract

This study specifically aims to examine three primary aspects of Muhammad Quraish Shihab’s exegesis on the verses concerning ḥūr ‘ain: first, how his interpretation balances literal and symbolic meanings in elucidating the concept of bidadari (heavenly maidens); second, how his tafsir critiques and revises the patriarchal gender biases embedded in classical interpretations; and third, how his interpretation contextualizes the understanding of the bidadari verses within the social and spiritual realities of modern Muslim communities. With this focus, the research seeks to fill an academic gap that has hitherto insufficiently addressed modern exegetical approaches which not only preserve the textual authenticity of the Qur’an but also accommodate the demands of contemporary times and gender justice. Employing qualitative methods and content analysis, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the hermeneutical strategies employed by Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Misbah, while opening an academic discourse on the impact of his interpretation on gender discourse within Islam and its reception in contemporary intellectual circles. The findings affirm that Quraish Shihab’s tafsir endeavors to redefine the eschatological narrative of ultimate bliss in a more inclusive and progressive manner, positioning the bidadari as a universal symbol that transcends the traditionally reductive and patriarchal meanings. This approach enables readers to situate these verses within a richer and more relevant theological framework, while significantly contributing to the development of contemporary tafsir characterized by dialogical and critical engagement. Consequently, this interpretation plays a pivotal role in broadening gender perspectives within Islamic studies, opening avenues for reinterpretations of religious texts that embrace gender equality and the pluralistic experiences of Muslim communities. The study also highlights the necessity for continued scholarship that integrates exegetical inquiry with social and gender analyses, ensuring that tafsir serves not merely as textual exegesis but as a vehicle for progressive social transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the speech level of the Javanese language in Bisri Mustofa's Tafsir al-Ibriz. Bisri Musthofa's Tafsir al-Ibriz has a great locality value, used Javanese as an interpretation of the Qur’an text. As it is known that Java has language etiquette or politeness rules that are used to distinguish between disrespectful language (rough/ngoko) and respectful language (smooth/madya-krama) which indicates strata or social status. Through library research and using a sociolinguistic approach, this study shows that Tafsir al-Ibriz contains a language hierarchy (speech level) in the dialogues contained in the Qur'an which is interpreted using Javanese language rules according to their social position. However, in its application, Bisri found inconsistencies in the use of the language level used, such as dawuh and ngendika sentences. In the dialogue of the Qur'an, the utterances conveyed by Allah to His servants, the speech of a leader to the people, the speech of parents to their children, are expressed using the ngoko language. Vice versa, the speech conveyed by servants to Allah, children to their parents, subordinates to their leaders is expressed using the language of manners, and dialogues with others, such as Prophet Musa and Prophet Harun are interpreted using ngoko language. Thus, it can be understood that Tafsir al-Ibriz uses the ngoko-madya-krama language level as a manifestation of the Javanese symbolic classification system based on several categories of high-low, formal-informal, or foreign-ordinary

Abstract

Artikel ini merupakan tinjauan ilmiah yang secara substansial mendiskusikan makna kata kalimat dalam Surah Al-Baqarah ayat 124 dengan pendekatan sastra Amin al-Khuli. Fokus utama terletak pada bagaimana istilah kalimat tidak sekadar dimaknai sebagai perintah syariat dalam tafsir klasik, melainkan sebagai simbol perjalanan spiritual Nabi Ibrahim dalam membentuk integritas dan ketundukan profetik. Metode kualitatif deskriptif berbasis studi Pustaka digunakan untuk menjawab penelitian tersebut. Data dikumpulkan dari tafsir klasik dan kontemporer serta literatur terkait teori kesusastraan Al-Qur’an. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan Amin al-Khuli yang melibatkan konteks historis sosial Al-Qur’an dan kajian tekstual kebahasaan ayat Al-Qur’an mampu mengungkap dimensi simbolik kalimat sebagai firman Allah berupa rangkaian ujian kenabian, mulai dari dakwah kepada ayah dan kaumnya, hijrah, meninggalkan keluarga, hingga penyembelihan Ismail. Dengan demikian, artikel ini berkontribusi dalam perluasan makna tekstual Al-Qur’an ke arah pemahaman simbolik dan eksistensial melalui pendekatan interdisipliner dalam tafsir.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpretation of syifa' (healing) verses in the Qur'an by two prominent exegetes, M. Quraish Shihab and Sayyid Quthb, focusing on six key verses: At-Tawbah [9]:14, Yunus [10]:57, An-Nahl [16]:69, Al-Isra [17]:82, Ash-Shu‘ara [26]:80, and Fussilat [41]:44. Employing a qualitative library research method with a comparative approach, this study examines the similarities and differences in their interpretations by considering each scholar’s historical and theological context. The findings reveal that while both exegetes agree that syifa' represents a form of divine mercy with healing properties, Quraish Shihab tends to elaborate on its dual function—spiritual and physical—using contextual and multidisciplinary reasoning. Sayyid Quthb, on the other hand, primarily views syifa' in a spiritual and moral light, emphasizing faith and justice within a socio-political framework. Quraish Shihab’s interpretation also opens space for scientific perspectives, as seen in his discussion of honey in Surah An-Nahl as a natural remedy, whereas Sayyid Quthb focuses more on spiritual purification. This study suggests that the Qur'anic concept of syifa' offers potential for integrating spiritual values with modern scientific approaches to health, thus encouraging a holistic understanding of healing that encompasses physical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions.

Abstract

The phenomenon of ethical leadership in Islam has become increasingly crucial amid contemporary social dynamics. This study aims to analyze the principles of ethical leadership from the perspective of the Qur'an and their application in the case of Gus Miftah. A descriptive qualitative approach based on library research was employed. Primary sources include the Qur'an, Tafsir al-Azhar by Hamka, and Al-Ahkam As-Sultaniyyah. The data were analyzed using content analysis through a deductive approach—deriving general principles from primary texts to examine contemporary leadership phenomena. The findings reveal that ethical leadership in Islam is grounded in the values of trustworthiness (amanah), justice, consultation (shura), and etiquette in speech. In the case of Gus Miftah, a discrepancy is found between the ideal Qur'anic leadership principles and the public communication practices exhibited, particularly concerning respect for individual dignity. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of Qur'anic-based ethical leadership frameworks within contemporary exegesis. Practically, it offers insights for religious figures and public leaders to enhance ethical sensitivity and communication standards in social and religious spheres.

Abstract

The story of Qarun in Surah Al-Qasas (verses 76–83) contains profound moral lessons about the importance of gratitude for the blessings bestowed by Allah SWT. Qarun was a man granted immense wealth, yet he fell into arrogance, excessive love for worldly pleasures, and denial of Allah as the true source of his prosperity. As a result, he was destroyed—a fate that serves as a timeless warning for humanity. This study employs a tafsīr maqāṣidī (maqāṣid-based interpretation) approach to analyze Qarun’s character and the underlying Islamic legal values found in his story. This method emphasizes exploring the noble objectives of divine revelation, particularly three key aspects of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah: ḥifẓ al-dīn (preservation of religion), ḥifẓ al-nafs (preservation of life), and ḥifẓ al-māl (preservation of wealth). Qarun stands as a clear example of failure to uphold these values due to greed and pride. The story also highlights the principle of al-musāwah (equality), affirming that wealth and status are not measures of a person’s virtue in the sight of Allah—piety is. This message challenges the materialistic worldview that equates success with possessions. In today’s context, Qarun’s story is highly relevant as a critique of hedonism, consumerism, and social inequality. Qarun symbolizes moral collapse due to spiritual negligence and serves as a warning to manage worldly blessings ethically, responsibly, and in balance with both worldly and spiritual needs.

Abstract

The concept of jihad has often sparked controversy, particularly when narrowly interpreted as religious justification for violence. In today's global context, jihad is frequently misunderstood and exploited by extremist groups to legitimize radical actions. This study aims to analyze the interpretation of jihad in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 190–192 based on the perspective of Imam Al-Qurtubi through his seminal work Al-Jami’ li Ahkam al-Qur’an. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive method using a library research approach. The findings reveal that Al-Qurtubi interprets jihad as a defensive effort against oppression and aggression, to be carried out justly, proportionally, and within the ethical boundaries of Islamic law. Warfare is prohibited in the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) unless provoked, and hostility must cease when the aggressor withdraws. These interpretations underscore that jihad, in Al-Qurtubi’s view, is not an expansionist doctrine of violence but a pursuit of justice and peace. The relevance of this interpretation is significant in the modern era as it helps rectify misconceptions surrounding jihad and contributes to a narrative of Islam that upholds peace and human dignity. This study is significant for its contribution to strengthening the discourse of religious moderation through a contextual and contemporary reading of classical Islamic exegesis

Abstract

This study examines the concept of water as the source of life in the Qur'an through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates thematic exegesis with scientific perspectives from hydrology. The research focuses on identifying and analyzing Qur'anic verses that describe the stages of the hydrological cycle—including evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, and surface runoff—and correlating them with contemporary scientific understandings of the Earth's water systems. The findings reveal a significant correlation between the Qur'anic portrayal of water and the fundamental principles of hydrological science. This correlation not only demonstrates the coherence between divine revelation and empirical knowledge but also underscores the potential of religious texts to provide normative foundations for ecological ethics. The study is significant in that it positions the Qur'an as a valuable source for shaping sustainable water management paradigms while enriching thematic Qur'anic exegesis through a more contextual and environmentally responsive interpretive framework

Abstract

Pajak daerah merupakan salah satu instrumen penting dalam pembiayaan pembangunan dan pelayanan publik di tingkat daerah. Dalam konteks Islam, pemungutan pajak harus sejalan dengan prinsip-prinsip keadilan, kemaslahatan, dan tujuan syariat (maqasid al-syariah). Pada penelitian ini akan menafsirkan yaitu Qs.At-Taubah: 29, ayat ini dipilih sebagai objek kajian penafsiran karena mengandung unsur jizyah yang sesuai dengan tema kajian pada penelitian ini, sehingga dapat dikontekstualisasikan untuk menjawab persoalan kekinian yang akan dibahas pada penelitian ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan tafsir maqasidi, yaitu menafsirkan teks ayat Al-Qur’an dengan mempertimbangkan nilai-nilai dan tujuan syariat secara menyeluruh. Dengan menganalisis sumber primer dalam penelitian ini yaitu ayat al-Qur’an dengan merujuk kepada kitab tafsir klasik, modern dan kontemporer hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Q.S. At-Taubah ayat 29 yang awalnya berkaitan dengan konsep jizyah terhadap ahlul kitab di era Rasulullah SAW, secara maqasidi dapat dijadikan landasan moral dan etik bagi pelaksanaan pajak daerah di Indonesia. Prinsip-prinsip seperti keadilan fiskal, kemaslahatan masyarakat, perlindungan hak individu, serta kejelasan aturan pemungutan menjadi bagian dari nilai-nilai maqasid yang harus diimplementasikan. Dengan demikian, realisasi pajak daerah yang berbasis tafsir maqasidi mampu menciptakan sistem perpajakan yang adil, proporsional, dan berorientasi pada kesejahteraan umat.
