Abstract

The values of peace education have consistently been implemented in public educational institutions and peace communities such as schools, Islamic boarding schools, and non-governmental peace organizations (NGOs) so that studies on the implementation of peace values in other educational institutions, such as pesantren-based schools, have become rare. This article seeks to fill this gap by examining the performance of peace values in Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, focusing on Peaceantren Welas Asih (PWA) of Garut, West Java. The qualitative research method collects observation data, interviews, and document reviews. This research found a process of implementing the values of peace in PWA using the 12 values of peace as a basis. This was then revealed in activities encouraging PWA students to become peacemakers. The program I Massage Card, Positive Discipline, and Peace Camp is part of PWA's efforts to instill peace values that have proven successful. In addition, cooperation between schools and parents of students helps these programs run successfully. This study concludes that developing pesantren-based schools is not only concerned with modernizing Islamic education. Still, the social-community role is far from that, especially the creation of human resources aware of peace. Contribution: The study emphasizes the importance of collaboration between schools and parents in reinforcing peace education efforts. This insight can guide other institutions in developing partnerships that support educational goals.

Abstract

This study examines the role of religious motivators in enhancing the spiritual life of coastal communities at Pameungpeuk Beach. It focuses on three key aspects: the state of religious life prior to intervention, the identification of relevant religious materials, and the strategies employed by motivators to guide the community toward spiritual and social transformation. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, gathering data through observations, interviews, and document analysis, with participants including fishermen, mosque administrators, and local leaders. The findings reveal that religious mentorship addressing the principles of faith, sharia, and morality significantly improved the community's spiritual engagement and understanding of Islamic practices. Faith-building initiatives tailored to the community's daily experiences strengthened their connection to religious teachings, while practical workshops on worship practices addressed prior knowledge gaps. Moral teachings fostered values such as honesty and cooperation, leading to broader social and economic improvements. This research highlights the transformative potential of a mosque-centered, contextual approach in addressing the unique challenges of coastal communities. It demonstrates the vital role of mosques as spiritual, educational, and social hubs, underscoring the importance of transparency and inclusivity in mosque management. The findings contribute to global discussions on community-based spiritual formation and offer a replicable model for similar contexts worldwide. By revitalizing the function of mosques and integrating religious teachings with everyday life, this study presents a sustainable pathway for fostering optimism, resilience, and social cohesion in underserved communities.

Abstract

This study examines the moral and philosophical messages of two ancient Sundanese manuscripts, namely Amanat Galunggung and Sanghyang Siksa Kandang Karesian, then relates them to Unpar's Spirituality and Basic Values known as SINDU. Data were collected using a qualitative research strategy through in-depth interviews and literature studies. Then, they were analyzed based on the theory of intertextuality, namely by examining the messages of each manuscript, comparing them, and seeing the correlation or interdependence between the two. The results of the study show that the two ancient Sundanese manuscripts above are full of humanitarian messages that remain relevant and significant for modern human life. The concept of SINDU, which was born more recently, finds its basis and foundation in the teachings that have long existed in the two ancient manuscripts. This study also reveals the existence of basic human needs for humanitarian values throughout their lives, whether in the past, present, or future. Moral and philosophical values are needed by humans in an effort to make themselves humane and divine. Contribution: It underscores the persistent human need for moral and philosophical guidance across time, enriching both academic understanding and practical applications in promoting humane and divine human development.

Abstract

This article critically examines the concept of pluralism within the study of religion, addressing both its theoretical foundations and practical applications across various countries. Religious pluralism is understood as the recognition of religious diversity as a social and theological reality that must be approached with openness, dialogue, and mutual respect. Employing a qualitative approach through literature review, this study analyzes key works by Paul F. Knitter, Wilfred Cantwell Smith, and Alwi Shihab, while also presenting case studies from Indonesia, India, the United States, and Western Europe. The findings reveal that pluralism is not merely a moral ideal but also a necessary framework for promoting peaceful coexistence amid difference. Despite facing challenges such as fundamentalism, discrimination, and identity politics, pluralism remains relevant as a foundation for inclusive and transformative religious studies. The article recommends strengthening interfaith education, supporting diversity-oriented policies, and encouraging religious leaders to foster interreligious dialogue. Contribution:  The study offers actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing interfaith education, supporting policies that encourage diversity, and promoting interreligious dialogue, thereby enriching both academic discourse and practical efforts toward inclusive and transformative religious engagement.

Abstract

This article critically examines the issue of premature ownership transfer (early name change) in Ijarah Muntahiya Bittamlik (IMBT) contracts within Indonesian Islamic banking, focusing on both sharia and national legal perspectives. Premature transfer is understood as the transfer of ownership before the lease period ends, which raises concerns of legal certainty, potential tadlīs (disguised contract), and elements of gharar (uncertainty). Using a qualitative juridical-empirical approach, this study analyzes DSN-MUI fatwas, national legal regulations, and operational practices of Islamic banks. The findings reveal that premature ownership transfer contradicts both sharia principles and positive law, as it undermines fiduciary guarantees and weakens consumer protection. The main challenge identified is the persistence of such practices in the field due to administrative efficiency, often at the expense of normative compliance. As an alternative, the study recommends the implementation of the wakalah scheme, whereby dealers authorize banks to process ownership transfer only after all lessee obligations have been fulfilled, thus ensuring both compliance and efficiency. Contribution: This study contributes to the development of Islamic economic law by integrating classical fiqh, national regulations, and contemporary practices, while also offering practical recommendations for the Islamic banking industry to strengthen legal certainty, consumer protection, and global competitiveness.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of Philippians 4:5 in strengthening religious moderation among Indonesian Christians, particularly in addressing intolerance, radicalization, and social tension within a pluralistic society. Employing a qualitative method and hermeneutical approach, the research explores the theological significance of the term epieikēs in Pauline theology and its relation to the principles of religious moderation in public policy and education. The findings reveal that epieikēs is not merely an individual virtue but a public and intersubjective ethical principle that can serve as a foundation for harmonious interfaith relations. This study affirms that integrating religious moderation values derived from Philippians 4:5 into government policy, religious education, and interfaith praxis can enhance social cohesion and enrich Christian public theology with socially relevant insights. The study contributes to the discourse on public theology, interreligious studies, and value-based policy formulation in religiously diverse societies. Contribution: It highlights the significance of epieikēs as a public and intersubjective ethical principle that extends beyond individual virtue, providing a foundation for fostering tolerance, mitigating radicalization, and reducing social tensions in a pluralistic context.

Abstract

This article attempts to analyze the influence of Islamic civilization on the rise and progress of European-Christian (Western) civilization in the Middle Ages. The focus of this research is to trace the process of transferring knowledge (philosophy, science, technology, humanities, literature, medicine) from the Islamic world to European-Christian society through intellectual interaction in Andalusia (Spain), translation of scientific works of Islamic intellectuals, and through trade and the Crusades. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature study approach, where data are obtained from various academic literature sources and other scientific works. The results of the study show that Islamic civilization in Andalusia played a very decisive role in triggering intellectual development and European-Christian civilization which became the foundation for the Renaissance (Revival) in the West. Through a number of libraries and educational institutions in Andalusia and other Islamic centers, the process of translating books by Islamic scientists in Arabic into Latin took place by European-Christian students who brought them and spread them in their respective countries, thus giving birth to the spirit of the Renaissance in mainland Europe. This study concludes that Islamic civilization not only played a role as the guardian of the classical knowledge heritage of Greece, Rome, Persia, India, but also as a red carpet for European civilization, from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance (Revival).

Abstract

This study aims to examine the transformative leadership model implemented by a village head with a background as a former thug and its implications for the community empowerment process in Cikuya Village, Cicalengka District, Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Village leaders with non-conventional backgrounds are often perceived negatively and considered problematic in the context of village governance. However, in practice, such figures have the potential to bring about significant social change, particularly in village development and strengthening community participation. This study uses a qualitative approach with juridical-sociological methods to deeply understand the socio-political dynamics, leadership patterns, and the legitimacy of the village head's power from the perspective of constitutional law and Islamic values. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, involving the village head, village government officials, community leaders, and residents of Cikuya Village as key informants. Data analysis was carried out using the siyasah dusturiyah theoretical framework as proposed by Ibn Taymiyyah, which emphasized that the legitimacy of leadership is not determined by a person's social background, but rather by the leader's capacity to carry out mandates, uphold justice, and create benefits for the wider community. Through this approach, research is expected to be able to reveal the process of social transformation from a thug figure to a formal leader who is recognized legally and socially. Apart from that, this research is also expected to show how leadership can form effective, responsive, and inclusive patterns, as well as to provide theoretical contributions to the study of village leadership and practical contributions to strengthening village governance.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of democracy in Indonesia after the 1998 reforms, which was marked by a weakening of the substantive quality of democracy and the strengthening of covert authoritarianism. Using a qualitative approach and desk study methods, this study analyzes the dynamics of contemporary Indonesian politics through Robert A. Dahl's theory of polyarchy, Larry Diamond's concept of democratic consolidation, and Andreas Schedler and Nancy Bermeo's framework of electoral authoritarianism. The findings indicate that although democratic procedures, such as elections, remain formally valid, the practices of power tend to be exclusive, repressive, and manipulative. Civic space has been narrowed, criticism of power has been criminalized, and independent oversight institutions have lost their function. This phenomenon indicates a shift toward a hybrid regime, or a formal democracy but authoritarian in substance. To prevent anti-democratic consolidation of power, institutional reform, the enforcement of a just rule of law, and the empowerment of civil society as a countervailing force are necessary. This research is expected to contribute to the academic literature on latent threats to democracy and provide a normative basis for strengthening substantive democracy in Indonesia.
