Abstract

This study aims to examine strategies and community actions in fostering a green environment as part of ecological sustainability efforts. A green environment is conceptualized as a lifestyle emphasizing ecological awareness, wise resource management, and the reduction of negative impacts on nature. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation with a local community actively engaged in environmental initiatives. The findings reveal that simple practices such as waste management, tree planting, and reducing plastic usage significantly improve environmental quality while fostering ecological awareness among community members. The main challenges identified include inconsistent eco-friendly behavior, limited waste management infrastructure, and insufficient support from local policies. Practical implications highlight the need for continuous environmental education, strengthening youth involvement as agents of change, and integrating eco-friendly programs into local development policies. Contribution: This study contributes to the academic discourse on the relationship between social behavior, ecological awareness, and sustainability, while offering a community-based model for environmental movements that can be replicated in various social contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of relations between Muslims and non-Muslims in Indonesia through the study of the Fiqh Al-Muwatanah book, written by alumni of the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School in Kediri, as a response to the challenges of nationality, plurality, and religiosity. The study highlights the transformation of classical Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) views regarding the status of non-Muslims, replacing the term "kafir" with the concept of non-Muslims as equals (muwatin), which is relevant to the life of the modern nation-state. The study uses a qualitative descriptive-analytical method with document studies, critical textual studies, and a contextual approach to understand the principles of citizenship, tolerance, and social integration. The results show that Islam Nusantara emphasizes ukhuwah wathaniyah (brotherhood), unity of the ummah, and acceptance of pluralism, placing social welfare above differences in fiqh methodology or minor creeds. This principle is realized through respect for the government, the prohibition of rebellion, the ethics of enjoining good and forbidding evil, and gradual and contextual da'wah (preaching). This approach emphasizes equality of citizenship, protection of basic rights, and recognition of social and religious diversity, without sacrificing the principles of creed. The study also emphasizes that Islam is a mercy for all the worlds, guiding people to act justly, be caring, and maintain social and ecosystem balance. The historical context, including colonialism, classical fiqh, and the experience of the Indonesian archipelago as Darul Islam, demonstrates the need to reinterpret classical norms within the framework of ethics, pluralism, and human rights. Thus, Fiqh Al-Muwatanah offers moderate and inclusive guidance, strengthening social cohesion, affirming the role of active citizens, and building peace in a pluralistic society, making Islamic practice contextual, peaceful, and relevant to modern Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the process of social integration and the maintenance of religious identity of the Balinese Hindu community in Pematang Tahalo Village, Hamlet IV, Gunung Kerung, Jabung District, East Lampung Regency. Within a predominantly Muslim community, the Balinese Hindu community demonstrates the ability to adapt and build harmonious social relations without obscuring its religious identity. This study aims to understand the social, cultural, and religious mechanisms that shape interfaith relations in a multicultural environment. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Key informants included traditional leaders, religious leaders, community administrators, and Balinese Hindu youth. Data analysis was conducted inductively, referring to the theories of religion as a cultural system (Geertz), social solidarity (Durkheim), and the social construction of religion (Asad). The results indicate that social integration is built through interfaith cooperation, mutual cooperation, and mutual respect. Religious traditions such as mass cremation (ngaben), temple odalan (puppet ceremony), and melasti (pilgrimage ceremony) reinforce collective identity, strengthen social solidarity, and promote local pluralism.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of peer discussion activities in improving the speaking fluency of EFL learners, to explore learners’ perceptions of peer-based speaking practice, and to identify the pedagogical factors that influence its successful implementation. Key concepts underlying this research include speaking fluency as a core component of communicative competence, Communicative Language Teaching, and socio-constructivist learning. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The participants were Grade VIII students in an Indonesian junior high school. Data were collected through speaking fluency tests administered before and after the intervention, learner perception questionnaires, and classroom observations during peer discussion activities. The findings indicate that structured peer discussion activities significantly improved learners’ speaking fluency, as evidenced by increased speech rate, reduced hesitation, and smoother speech continuity. Learners also reported positive attitudes toward peer discussion, particularly in terms of reduced speaking anxiety, increased confidence, and greater classroom engagement. However, the study faced challenges related to limited intervention duration and a relatively small sample size. Based on these findings, the study recommends the systematic integration of peer discussion activities into EFL speaking instruction, with careful attention to task design and discussion format. Contribution:This study contributes to EFL pedagogy by providing empirical evidence on the role of peer discussion in developing speaking fluency and by reinforcing communicative and socio-constructivist frameworks within the context of junior high school EFL instruction.

Abstract

After the Padri War (1803-1837), Tuanku Imam Bondjol was exiled by the Dutch colonial government to Minahasa and Manado. During his exile in Manado, his son, Naali Sutan Caniago, who accompanied Tuanku Imam Bondjol during his exile, wrote a manuscript about his father's struggle. This manuscript is called the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol Manuscript, which is a single manuscript (codex unicus). In general, this manuscript contains a summary of the history of the Padri War in West Sumatra in the 19th century. It contains Tuanku Imam Bondjol's memoirs, his thoughts, and notes on the Padri war. In this study, the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript is examined using philological and historical methods. This manuscript has been transliterated and translated by Safnir Abu Naim, However, this study will trace the philological stages carried out on the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript to demonstrate its originality and authenticity. The problem examined in this study is how the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript stands as a historical source of the Padri War. To that end, a textual study of the translation of the manuscript was conducted using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method modeled by Teun A. Van Dijk. This study also uses the Historical Method with the ultimate goal of compiling a historiography of the struggle of Tuanku Imam Bondjol and the Padri War. From the results of the study, it is concluded that the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript is an authentic source of the Padri War, a first-hand historical source originating from indigenous records. Before the discovery of this manuscript, sources for the Padri War were generally only from colonial archives.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the dynamics of transitions between stages of health behavior as a social process occurring in the daily practices of Indonesians, while also exploring the mechanisms that most consistently explain these transitions based on the reviewed literature. Using a literature review and document analysis approach, various empirical findings regarding health practices were analyzed thematically. Stella Quah's conceptual framework was utilized to categorize the results into three main domains: preventive behavior, illness behavior, and sick-role behavior. The results indicate three recurring social mechanisms. First, the meaning of health, which is based on the ability to perform social functions, creates a certain threshold of seriousness, which influences decisions about when preventive action is deemed necessary and when symptoms are deemed to require further treatment. Second, the flow of knowledge circulating within families, community networks, and digital media acts as an interpretive filter in understanding symptoms and determining what steps are considered rational at the sick-role stage. Third, experiences interacting with health services and barriers to access contribute to shaping patterns of care-seeking at the sick-role stage, including the process of negotiating therapy within the context of medical pluralism. In some situations, religious practices serve as both emotional support and daily discipline, helping to stabilize treatment choices across these stages. This research is limited to consistent patterns within the analyzed corpus of literature and is not intended to be generalized to the entire Indonesian social context. This research expands the body of knowledge on the sociology of health in Indonesia by reformulating the linkages between the three stages of health behavior and recurring social mechanisms, and synthesizing the diverse health practices documented in the reviewed literature.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the rapid development of digital communication, which has had a significant impact on social interaction patterns, including in the realm of da'wah (Islamic outreach), which is now often conducted online. One interesting figure to study is Dondy Tan, a content creator who actively uses YouTube to deliver da'wah. The content he presents not only conveys moral and religious messages but also often touches on fundamental theological issues, such as understanding divinity, interpreting holy books, and studying the history of religious development. The main focus of this research is to analyze how Dondy Tan constructs the argumentation flow in each of his da'wah content, as well as to examine how the audience, especially the netizen community, responds to and interprets the messages conveyed. This research uses a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach. The primary data source is Dondy Tan's da'wah videos uploaded to his YouTube channel, which are then analyzed using Fairclough's discourse analysis framework. Furthermore, netizen comments in the discussion column are also studied, especially comments that generate a lot of responses, replies, and debate. The intense interaction in the comment space reflects the dynamics of digital communication and the construction of meaning for the da'wah messages conveyed.

Abstract

Bandung is a multicultural city with high religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity. However, this condition also gives rise to the potential for intolerance, which has received serious attention in recent years. In response, the Bandung City Government initiated the Tolerance Village to strengthen interfaith harmony and increase community multicultural awareness. By 2025, six villages had been inaugurated. This study aims to examine the role of the Tolerance Village in maintaining harmony, increasing multicultural awareness, and comparing similarities and differences between the six locations. The research method used was a qualitative descriptive, comparative case study. Data were collected through interviews, field observations, and document analysis. The results show that the Tolerance Village contributes positively to the creation of interfaith dialogue spaces, strengthening diversity-based social interactions, and multicultural education at the community level. However, budget limitations, resistance from some groups, and lack of program sustainability are obstacles that need to be overcome. This study concludes that Tolerance Village can serve as an innovative social model for building urban harmony. This program needs to be expanded to other areas by strengthening stakeholder collaboration to make Bandung more inclusive, tolerant, and sustainable.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of religion in managing social conflict in rural areas, focusing on the practice of the musyawarah forum in Cimaung, Bandung Regency. Religion is conceptualized not merely as a symbol but as an epistemological framework and symbolic capital that provides social legitimacy in mediation processes. Employing a qualitative approach, this research combined participant observation, in-depth interviews, and NVivo-assisted analysis to capture discursive patterns within the forum’s practices. The findings reveal that religious leaders act as insider mediators, whose moral legitimacy enables them to effectively bridge communal disputes. Qur’anic values such as shura (consultation), rahmah (compassion), afw (forgiveness), and ‘adl (justice) constitute the forum’s foundation, thereby producing forms of positive peace that transcend immediate conflict resolution and foster long-term social cohesion. Challenges faced by the forum include the politicization of religious identity and heavy reliance on charismatic leaders. Practically, this study recommends strengthening the institutional capacity of religious-based forums to ensure inclusivity, sustainability, and resilience in rural peacebuilding. Contribution: This study contributes to the global discourse on religious peacebuilding by providing empirical evidence from rural Indonesia, offering a Qur’an-based musyawarah model as a grassroots peace infrastructure relevant to international debates.

Abstract

Social media increasingly shapes urban youth's moral development, including mosque youth expected to model religious values—a challenge prior character education efforts, focused on cognitive and ritual aspects, have failed to address amid digital advances. Adolescents struggle to filter information, resist negative content, and sustain moral behavior online and offline. This study innovates by empowering mosque youth as moral agents blending religious values with digital literacy. Objectives include describing social media's moral impacts, evaluating character education's role, and assessing mosque-based community service in Bandung. Using qualitative case studies of three mosque youth groups (via observation, interviews, and documentation), findings reveal social media's ambivalent effects: bolstering religious identity yet risking degradation. Mosque-rooted programs effectively build moral literacy, self-control, and value-based networks, underscoring adaptive, community-driven models for youth morality in the social media era.
