Thus, Indonesian and non-Indonesian scholars have enriched the studies published in the journal. Although not from the beginning Moderasi : Journal of Islamic Studies presents highly qualified scholarly articles, improvement—in terms of format, style, and academic quality—never ceases. With articles written in Indonesian, Arabic and English and with the fair procedure of peer review, Moderasi : Journal of Islamic Studies continues publishing research and studies pertinent to Islamic studies with various dimensions and approaches. Moderasi : Journal of Islamic Studies, published twice a year, always places Islam and Muslims in the central focus of academic inquiry and invites any comprehensive observation of Islam as a theological belief and a system of society and Muslims as those who practice the religion with their many facets. This journal, serving as a forum for studying Islam in Indonesia and other parts of the world within its local and challenging global context, supports focused studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies. Moderasi : Journal of Islamic Studies has become a medium of diffusion and exchange of ideas and research findings, so much so that researchers, writers, and readers from various traditions of learning have interacted in a scholarly manner.

Abstract

The main question in this article is how the concept of Islamic law can address contemporary social issues such as gender inequality, radicalism, religious pluralism, and the environmental crisis in the context of a modern, multicultural and complex society. The purpose of this study is to explore the relevance of Islamic law in responding to various social challenges through an inclusive and adaptive approach to religious moderation (wasathiyyah). The approach used is a qualitative literature study method, utilizing primary sources such as the Qur'an and hadith as well as secondary sources in the form of scientific journals, fatwas, and works of contemporary scholars. The analysis focuses on the integration of basic principles of Islamic law such as justice ('adl), equality (musawah), tolerance (tasamuh), and balance (tawazun), formulated within the framework of maqashid sharia. The main findings of this article indicate that Islamic law has normative flexibility through the instruments of ijtihad, ijma', and qiyas that allow for adjustment to social change without eliminating the fundamental values of Islamic teachings. Religious moderation plays a crucial role in countering extremism, promoting interfaith harmony, championing gender equality, and strengthening environmental conservation ethics. The implications of this research provide a theoretical and conceptual basis that can be used by policymakers, educators, and Islamic legal practitioners to respond to social issues more relevantly. A limitation of this study lies in the lack of empirical or field data to test the implementation of the concepts studied. Nevertheless, the originality of this research lies in the synthesis of classical fiqh discourse and contemporary social demands within a comprehensive conceptual framework, differing from previous studies that tended to be partial or thematic.

Abstract

This research aims to identify forms of first language phonetic interference occurring in the pronunciation of Arabic phonemes, analyze common error patterns encountered, and uncover factors contributing to interference in vocabulary learning at Al-Mumtaaz Islamic Elementary School. The research method employed is a qualitative phenomenological approach, with data collection techniques including participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that phonetic interference manifests as phoneme substitution, sound distortion, epenthesis (sound addition), and intonation changes. Pronunciation errors most frequently appear in phonemes absent in the Indonesian language, such as /ق/, /ص/, /خ/, /ع/, /ذ/, and /ث/, which are replaced by the closest phonemes from the first language. The primary causative factors are differences in phonetic systems, insufficient articulation practice, and the dominance of the first language in students' daily lives. The implications of these findings underscore the importance of integrating phonetic training into Arabic vocabulary instruction at the elementary level to prevent pronunciation errors from becoming permanent.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing hybrid contract-based financing models in supporting the financing of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by Islamic banking institutions in Indonesia, particularly in the context of ongoing digital transformation. The hybrid contract (akad hybrid) is an innovation that integrates two or more Sharia-compliant contracts into a single financing product, offering flexibility and tailored solutions to meet the complex financial needs of MSMEs. While the model provides several advantages, it also presents significant challenges, especially in terms of compliance with Sharia principles and the management of increasingly complex operational risks in the digital era. This research adopts a qualitative approach using a case study method involving three major Islamic banks in Indonesia: Bank Syariah Indonesia, Bank Muamalat, and Bank Mega Syariah. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with internal bank personnel, such as financing managers and risk analysts, as well as MSME clients. Document analysis of relevant bank policies was also conducted. The findings indicate that hybrid contracts have been effective in expanding MSME financing access, particularly in the trade and service sectors. However, notable risks persist, including inconsistency in contract implementation with Sharia regulations, limited customer understanding of contract structures, and technical challenges in digital-based monitoring. Therefore, the study recommends that Islamic banks enhance their technology-based risk management systems and expand digital Sharia contract education for MSME actors. These findings contribute significantly to the development of innovative and sustainable Sharia financing products that align with the dynamics of the digital economy.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of social interaction among Generation Z in the digital sphere and to identify the factors influencing the formation of tolerance and religious moderation attitudes on social media. The research focuses on how Generation Z negotiates identity, values, and empathy within the digital public sphere shaped by algorithms and opinion polarization. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, combining discourse analysis of interfaith-themed TikTok content such as “Edis TV Batu Hajar Aswad” and “Habib Jafar Kumpul Enam Agama” with reflective questionnaires from five Generation Z respondents. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model through the stages of data reduction, display, and verification, supported by source and method triangulation to ensure validity. The findings reveal that social media functions as a site for social learning and interfaith identity expression, where digital tolerance values are developed through interfaith meaning negotiation, digital empathy practices, and reflection on algorithmic bias. The formation of tolerant attitudes is influenced by family values, multicultural education, reflective digital literacy, and algorithmic exposure. The study highlights the significance of wasathiyah the Islamic principle of balance and justice as a moral foundation for fostering digital religious moderation and empathy-based literacy to strengthen social cohesion and a culture of tolerance in Indonesia’s multicultural society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the phenomenon of “multi-contract” (multi akad) in paylater transactions from the perspective of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, while comparing the legal opinions (fatwas) issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta’ al-Misriyyah. The research also explores the implications of these fatwas for the financial preferences and consumption behavior of Muslim Generation Z in Indonesia and Egypt. Methodologically, this study employs a qualitative descriptive–comparative approach through fatwa documentation analysis, literature review on maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, and surveys and interviews with Gen Z respondents from both countries. The findings reveal that paylater contracts often involve elements of riba (usury), gharar (uncertainty), and potential exploitation, thus failing to fully realize the objectives of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah such as the protection of wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl), justice (‘adl), and public welfare (maṣlaḥah). Regarding fatwa perspectives, MUI emphasizes that the paylater mechanism itself is not inherently problematic; rather, the issue lies in the interest-based contracts that constitute riba. Meanwhile, although Dar al-Ifta’ has not issued a specific fatwa on paylater services, its methodological approach emphasizes wasatiyyah (moderation) and maqāṣid-based reasoning in legal determinations. The survey results indicate that Muslim Gen Zs in both countries demonstrate growing sharī‘ah awareness, yet remain open to adopting paylater services as part of the digital lifestyle. Differences in regulatory and fatwa contexts lead to distinct preferences: Indonesian Gen Z tends to be more cautious toward interest-bearing paylater schemes, while Egyptian Gen Z is more influenced by perceived benefits, technological access, and levels of Islamic financial literacy. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for sharī‘ah-based financial education and digital literacy aligned with maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, as well as the development of compliant paylater models for Muslim Gen Zs in the digital era. This research contributes theoretically to the discourse on Islamic digital finance contracts and provides practical insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and fintech developers to design fair and maṣlaḥah-oriented paylater products.

Abstract

The development of the digital economy has created new opportunities for the emergence of technology- and innovation-based startups. However, limited access to financing is a major challenge to the growth and sustainability of startups, especially in the early stages. Sharia venture capital offers a strategic solution by providing high-risk financing coupled with managerial support, network access, and business mentoring. This article aims to analyze the strategic role of Sharia venture capital in accelerating startup growth in the digital economy landscape, reviewing its contribution to growth, challenges faced, and future prospects. The method used is a literature review with a qualitative-descriptive approach. The results of the study indicate that Sharia venture capital serves not only as a source of funding but also as a catalyst for innovation and a business accelerator. However, challenges such as unequal access, high risk, and incomplete regulations remain obstacles to optimizing the role of Sharia venture capital in Indonesia. Therefore, collaboration between the government, industry players, and financial institutions is key to creating a healthy and sustainable startup financing ecosystem

Abstract

Islamic legal thought and religious moderation play an important role in responding to the challenges of radicalization in society. Radicalization, which often arises from narrow, literal, and textual understandings of religion, frequently threatens social harmony and security stability. This paper aims to analyze how the principles of inclusive Islamic law and the approach of religious moderation can serve as solutions in addressing and responding to the issues and practices of radicalization. Through a qualitative approach and literature study, this research examines basic concepts in Islamic law and wasathiyyah (moderation) that emphasize equality, balance, justice, and tolerance. Religious moderation, as a paradigm that stresses contextual and adaptive religious understanding, is also explained as an effort to counter extremist and fundamentalist narratives. The research findings indicate that the integration of progressive Islamic legal thought and religious moderation can create a more inclusive and tolerant society toward radical ideologies. This article concludes that religious education that prioritizes moderate values and a holistic understanding of religion is a strategic step in preventing radicalization and promoting social peace in accordance with religious teachings.
