Abstract

The focus of this research is to see whether the Professional Hajj Manasik Guide Certification program is just a ceremonial activity (certificate orientation) or it is really a program that qualitatively produces prospective professional Hajj Manasik Guides. To obtain results regarding the level of knowledge, this research used a quantitative research method of the type of field research originating from pre-test and post-test documents of 81 participants in the batch IV 2019 certification program. The data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics t-test using the SPSS program assistance 23.0 for windows. There are two findings that can be put forward as a result of this research. First, the level of understanding of the certification participants after attending the program was in the high criteria, namely between a score of 74-81 with a percentage of 45.5% for 37 participants. This confirms that the certification activity succeeded in increasing the participants' knowledge. Second, the hypothesis which states the level of knowledge of the certification training participants is empirically proven to be accepted, positive, and significant with the t-test.

Abstract

Problems often color the implementation of Hajj and Umrah in Indonesia, one of the actual issues that hit the Hajj and Umrah activities today is the phenomenon of the Indonesian people who like to selfie in front of the Kaaba or during the process of other worship activities. This study aims to look at the Hajj and Umrah guidance management strategies in Indonesia in implementing the Hajj and Umrah guidance functions. The method used as a blade in this study is a qualitative type with a phenomenological approach. The results of this study indicate that in order to improve the quality of the congregation, a strategy is needed in the form of pre-departure guidance, during activities, and after worship activities. This strategy can provide awareness to prospective pilgrims in understanding the meaning of each process of Hajj and Umrah activities which are carried out with full faith, piety, and humility in order to arrive at the mabrur goals of Hajj and Umrah. One of them is to become hajj and umrah pilgrims who are mabrur and avoid hedonism, materialism, and consumerism.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of elderly-friendly Hajj services in Bengkulu City, Indonesia, where in 2023, out of 1,636 prospective pilgrims, 780 (48%) of them are elderly, of which 312 are from Bengkulu City. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method using Zeithaml's service quality framework which includes five dimensions namely tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis with eight key informants selected by purposive sampling, namely six elderly pilgrims from the 2023 Hajj season and two Hajj officers from Bengkulu City. This research uses content analysis through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The research findings show that while the accommodation facilities are generally adequate with features such as proper toilet seats and regular maintenance, they still face challenges with the limited availability of toilets suitable for the elderly. The reliability dimension showed strength through the implementation of a comprehensive staff training program and 24-hour support. However, the empathy dimension shows glaring gaps, especially in terms of the lack of staff initiative in providing personalized attention to elderly congregants, except in high-risk cases. The study concludes that while the framework for elderly-friendly Hajj services is in place, its implementation requires better integration of service quality principles, especially in the areas of physical infrastructure and empathic service provision. Key recommendations include improving the accessibility of public facilities through coordination with Saudi Arabian authorities and the establishment of special elderly service teams at the central, provincial, and district/city levels.

Abstract

In the modern era, the phenomenon of narcissistic tendencies has increasingly permeated the performance of Hajj and Umrah, obscuring the purpose of spirituality and replacing it with more secular motives. This raises concerns about the quality of moral education provided by the pilgrimage. The article aims to investigate the emerging phenomenon of narcissistic tendencies among Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, examining the underlying factors that drive such behavior and exploring effective strategies to address these challenges while preserving the spiritual essence of the pilgrimage. This study employed a qualitative research approach, utilizing in-depth interviews and direct participant observation to comprehensively explore the manifestations of narcissistic behaviors among Hajj and Umrah participants. Data analysis techniques using the Milles and Huberman models. The findings show that factors such as social pressure, the drive for social recognition, and the influence of social media play a significant role in encouraging narcissistic tendencies behavior among Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. However, it was also found that a holistic moral education approach by KBIHU Al-Multazam Waymili, including fostering spiritual values, providing moral material, personal counseling, strengthening habituation, being wise in using social media, and cultivating simplicity and self-reflection, can mitigate the negative impact of this phenomenon. In conclusion, the phenomenon of narcissistic tendencies in the Hajj and Umrah is a real challenge to maintain the values of spirituality and morality. However, this phenomenon can be overcome with the right moral education approach at the individual and community levels. Hajj and Umrah can remain strong mediums for moral education.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the persistent stereotype that Sufism and its followers are withdrawn from worldly affairs and passive in socio-economic engagement. Such perceptions are further reinforced when associated with the pilgrimage of Hajj, often viewed as the pinnacle of individual spirituality. The purpose of this research is to explore how modern Sufi practices, particularly in the context of Hajj, actively promote social movements and engagement in the digital economy. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature analysis and case studies of Sufi communities that integrate spiritual values with digital economic initiatives and community empowerment, especially in relation to Hajj-related activities. The theoretical framework is based on social movement theory and spiritual economy, focusing on the transformation of Sufis’ roles in contemporary society. The findings reveal that certain Sufi communities are actively developing digital economic ecosystems that support the Hajj, such as sharia-based crowdfunding platforms, spiritually inspired micro-enterprises, and productive zakat and waqf initiatives. These activities demonstrate that Sufis are no longer confined to an exclusive ascetic lifestyle but are evolving into progressive socio-economic actors. The study concludes that contemporary Sufism, through the integration of spiritual values and modern socio-economic practices, successfully challenges ascetic stereotypes and affirms its relevance in the context of Hajj and inclusive community development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of backpacker umrah, which has gained popularity in the digital era, focusing on its opportunities, challenges, and impact on pilgrims' spirituality and the umrah travel business. Backpacker umrah allows pilgrims to organize their journeys independently using digital technology, such as ticket booking applications, accommodations, and worship information platforms. Employing a qualitative approach based on interviews and literature studies, the results indicate that umrah travel agencies can capitalize on these opportunities by developing strategies such as customized digital services, collaboration with backpacker communities, and offering more flexible umrah packages. Additionally, the study finds that technology has a dual impact on pilgrims' spirituality. On one hand, technology facilitates the implementation of worship; on the other hand, excessive reliance on technology can diminish the solemnity and spiritual meaning of the rituals. Therefore, it is crucial for pilgrims to maintain a balance between technology use and the essence of worship. This study provides valuable insights for the umrah travel industry in adapting to digital transformation while strengthening the spiritual dimensions of worship in the modern era.

Abstract

This study examines the accountability practices of Special Hajj Organizers (PIHK) in Yogyakarta Province using Stewart’s (1984) accountability ladder, which includes five levels: honesty and legality, process, performance, program, and policy accountability. A qualitative approach was used, with data collected through interviews and documents related to PIHK accountability. The study involved five key informants consisting of PIHK leaders, finance staff, and pilgrims from PT Citra Wisata Dunia and PT Al Anshor Madinah Barokah. The findings show strong accountability practices at the levels of honesty and legality, process, performance, and program accountability. However, policy accountability appears weak due to the lack of triangulable sources and data. This study is the first to investigate accountability in the special Hajj services managed by travel agencies. Previous studies have focused on accountability in religious organizations, overlooking accountability in religious rituals that require economic information, such as the Hajj pilgrimage.

Abstract

This study employs a SWOT analysis to evaluate the strategic positioning of PT. Darul Arqam, an Umrah travel agency operating since June 2023 in Kraksaan, Probolinggo. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews, field observations, and internal documentation. Key findings highlight strengths in quality manasik guidance, adequate facilities, and responsive management, while weaknesses include limited operational scale and product diversification. Opportunities arise from growing demand for Umrah plus halal tourism and airline partnerships, countered by threats from industry competition, regulatory changes, and price fluctuations. The SWOT matrix and Cartesian diagram inform four strategies: SO (expanding Umrah plus tour packages), WO (enhancing human resources and digital promotion), ST (improving operational procedures for regulatory compliance), and WT (strengthening internal efficiency and service diversification). These findings offer actionable recommendations to enhance PT. Darul Arqam’s competitiveness and service quality.
