Abstract

Anemia in pregnant women is a significant public health issue, especially in rural areas like Mondokan, Tuban Regency, where access to quality healthcare and nutrition may be limited. This community service program aimed to improve hemoglobin levels in anemic pregnant women through the combination of iron tablets (Fe) and Ambon bananas, a locally available food rich in iron, potassium, and vitamin C. The program involved socialization, nutritional education, and the regular provision of iron supplements and Ambon bananas to pregnant women in the third trimester. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention to assess the impact. Results showed a significant increase in hemoglobin levels, with 80% of participants showing improvements, averaging an increase of 1.5 g/dL. In addition, knowledge of anemia and nutrition improved markedly among participants, and the community’s engagement was high, with over 85% of women attending group support sessions. The use of Ambon bananas also contributed to local economic development, as it promoted the use of locally sourced agricultural products. This program demonstrates the potential for combining local resources and nutritional interventions to address anemia, with positive health outcomes for both pregnant women and the broader community. The findings suggest that this approach can be replicated in other regions facing similar challenges.

Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial period requiring special attention to nutritional fulfillment, as the nutritional needs during this age are the highest compared to other age groups. Observations at Sanggar Bimbingan Muhammadiyah Kampung Baru Kuala Lumpur revealed several nutritional issues among students, such as unbalanced eating habits, unhealthy snack consumption, Body Mass Index (BMI) below 18.5, and low knowledge of balanced nutrition. To address these issues, a student nutrition awareness program was proposed, utilizing the five levels of prevention concept. The program employed a participatory approach through brainstorming, demonstrations, group discussions, and hands-on training. Activities included training, coaching, and monitoring students' nutritional status, with evaluation conducted using pre- and post-test questionnaires and skill checklists. The program also aligns with the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of Higher Education Institutions, namely KPI 2 (students gaining off-campus experience), KPI 3 (faculty engaging in off-campus activities), and KPI 5 (faculty outputs utilized by society). The program outcomes demonstrated significant improvements in students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices in implementing the concept of nutrition awareness based on the five levels of prevention. The outputs included enhanced student competencies in disseminating information and practicing balanced nutrition, the development of a Pocket Book on Healthy Eating Patterns and Balanced Nutrition, publication in the ABDIMASNU journal, media coverage in Rakyat Sulsel and Legion News, and the preparation of a comprehensive program report. This initiative is expected to contribute to raising nutritional awareness among adolescents in the community.

Abstract

Elementary schools serve as learning centers but are also prone to becoming sites for disease transmission if not properly managed. Data from the Makassar City Health Office in 2019 revealed high prevalence rates of diarrhea (50.89%), dermatitis (41.50%), and intestinal worm infections (56.80%) among elementary school-aged children, primarily due to poor personal and environmental hygiene. Similar health issues were observed among students in a mentoring center, where Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB) practices, as well as knowledge and skills in basic healthcare services, remained low.To address these issues, the establishment and training of young health cadres (PERCIL) were implemented at an elementary level in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, located at 30 Wisma Sabarudin, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The methods included literature studies, lectures, discussions, demonstrations, role-playing, and mentoring, with evaluation conducted using pre- and post-tests and skill checklists. The program results showed significant improvements in students’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to CHLB and their ability to provide basic healthcare services. Outputs included the formation of competent PERCIL cadres capable of disseminating health information and implementing CHLB concepts, publication in the ABDIMASNU Journal, dissemination in mass and online media, and an official service report. This program aims to create a healthy and productive group of children as a model for health interventions in other communities.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the main health issues faced in Indonesia, especially among children under five years old. Based on the 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) data, the national prevalence of stunting stands at 21.6%, although there has been a decrease compared to previous years. At the provincial level, South Sumatra also faces significant challenges in reducing the stunting rate. Based on SSGI 2022 data, the prevalence of stunting in South Sumatra is at 24.8%, slightly higher than the national average. This community service program aims to increase public understanding of stunting. The method used is Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results of the activity showed an increase in community knowledge about stunting by 5.35% based on the pre-test and post-test results. These findings indicate that the intervention in the form of education based on the SAKTI application within the community is effective in reducing the risk of stunting. This program is expected to become a model that can be replicated in other villages with similar conditions.

Abstract

Maternal health is a critical indicator of healthcare quality in a region. In Tuban Regency, Indonesia, integrated antenatal care (ANC) services remain underutilized due to limited access and insufficient awareness among pregnant women. This community engagement initiative aimed to address these gaps by implementing a comprehensive ANC program at the IIKNU Tuban campus. The program involved 30 pregnant women who participated in health check-ups, nutritional counseling, and early detection of complications such as pre-eclampsia and anemia. Educational sessions and personalized consultations emphasized the importance of routine ANC visits and healthy pregnancy practices. The results indicated significant improvements: 85% of participants reported increased awareness about ANC, 10% benefited from early detection of complications, and 90% appreciated the ease of access provided by the campus-based location. These outcomes highlight the effectiveness of integrating healthcare services within educational institutions to enhance maternal and fetal health, particularly in undeserved areas. This initiative offers a callable model for addressing maternal health challenges and underscores the value of localized health interventions.
