Abstract

This research focuses on translation and language errors discovered in English-Indonesian translation results. This study aims to investigate the types of errors mostly made by Indonesian novice translators. The data were obtained from translation practice assigned to undergraduate students, who were taking the compulsory basic translation course. The respondents, who were native Indonesian speakers, were asked to translate two paragraphs from a given text in class for one hour and send their translations to the raters via email. The raters then marked the errors in the students’ translations using the 2021 ATA’s Standardized Framework for Error Marking. The results of the study show that the most frequent errors made by the participants were spelling and terminology errors, which might be simply caused by sloppiness or by the participants’ lack of knowledge of the proper official Indonesian spelling system and which could be due to their ignorance of the proper terms.

Abstract

Angling has been taking place and is deeply rooted in historically German culture. Its functionality evolves from subsistence, economic livelihoods, customs and traditions, to recreational activities offering enjoyment of nature. Summer field research was conducted around Baden-Württemberg and Hessen with ten anglers of diverse backgrounds living in Germany. The qualitative ethnographic research and perspective-taking approach were applied through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies to explore the current angling culture in freshwater ecosystem landscapes comprising angling experiences and practices, and anglers’ perceptions. The research findings demonstrate angling goes beyond fondness, it is a matter of responsibility in terms of animal welfare and ecosystem balance as is evident from anglers’ ecological consciousness adhering to the fishing rules and procedures, besides ethical considerations of human-nonhuman relations. Understanding fish through othering does not necessarily signify human supremacy over other species, but rather an act of reconciling, considering biological differences are ineluctable features of biological systems.

Abstract

This paper explores the profound meaning of the main stupa at Candi Borobudur and analyzes the implications of the proposed catra installation on the monument’s spiritual and cultural values. The interpretation is based on a post-processual perspective that emphasizes the importance of considering context, internal evidence, and internal symbolic relationships rather than seeking externally sourced validation. Through a combination of literature study, observation, and comparative analysis of stupas at Borobudur itself, contemporary Buddhist candis in Central Java, and various types of stupas abroad, this research concludes that the proposal for catra installation on the main stupa of Borobudur lacks a strong foundation both archaeologically and philosophically and does not contribute to the appreciation of spiritual values. The main stupa represents the pinnacle of the highest spiritual realization: the Buddha’s awakened mind (Dharmakaya). This ultimate meaning transcends other conventional symbolisms. This study underscores the importance of a contextual and comprehensive understanding of Borobudur, encompassing cultural, spiritual, and preservation aspects. This, in turn, has implications for the effectiveness of interpretation, conservation, and more sustainable development strategies for Borobudur and other Buddhist candi sites.

Abstract

Women writers have always contributed to literary development, but their works and thoughts have been structurally forgotten and erased. We conducted this research to unearth women writers' lives, works, and thoughts, which continue to be ignored in literary studies. We use feminist qualitative method and literature review technique to study literary initiatives from women writers in the past such as women-only periodicals. This research uses Virginia Woolf's thoughts as an analytical tool, and our findings show that the women-only space initiative was a response to the mainstream literary ecosystem's lack of support for women writers in various eras and countries. Through feminist initiatives, women writers have responded to the issues of their time and criticized the lack of representation of women and gender lenses in the literary space.

Abstract

A compound (kompositum) is a construction formed through word formation by combining two or more elements to create a new meaning. In Indonesian, compounds can be formed by combining several elements, one of which may be a nominal lexeme referring to a body part. Compound words can be distinguished from other word combinations—particularly syntactic phrases—based on grammatical and semantic criteria. Semantically, compounds can be analyzed according to the degree of idiomaticity in their meanings. Based on this premise, the present study aims to explain the idiomaticity of compounds in Indonesian that are formed by combining multiple elements, one of which is a body part lexeme, specifically compounds containing the lexeme hati(heart). This study on Indonesian compounds is a qualitative research project conducted through corpus analysis, utilizing the Indonesian Web as Corpus (IndonesianWac) available on the Sketch Engine corpus tool (http://www.sketchengine.co.uk/indonesian-wac/). The analysis of compound idiomaticity can be carried out using criteria such as lexical and grammatical variability, literality, compositionality versus non-compositionality, and predictability. Based on these criteria, a number of compounds containing the lexeme hati were identified and categorized as idiomatic compounds, semi-idiomatic compounds, and non-idiomatic compounds.

Abstract

Terrorism, as a global phenomenon, has been widely represented in various media, particularly in films. One of the films that represent terrorism is Zero Dark Thirty by Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal. This research aims to discuss the representation of terrorism in Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal's Zero Dark Thirty, employing a qualitative approach and an analytical descriptive method. To achieve the research objectives, the author employs John Fiske's Semiotics theory, which is divided into three levels: the reality level, the representation level, and the ideological level. The results and discussions in this study are presented through visual and narrative aspects, which encompass elements such as appearance, costume, environment, behavior, voice, camera techniques, music, and casting. Zero Dark Thirty represents an act of terrorism that is following real conditions in the world. The film portrays acts of terrorism such as shootings and bombings—including suicide attacks—which result in fatalities, material losses, and widespread trauma. These elements contribute to reinforcing stereotypes of terrorism associated with Middle Eastern countries and the conflicts surrounding them. Critical awareness is necessary when watching because, as a media product, television or film serves to convey information, ideology, ideas, or propaganda that supports the dominant interests in society. In the film Zero Dark Thirty, the dominant interest refers to American interests, which provide a single perspective on the topic of terrorism. This study highlights the importance of critical awareness in consuming media, as films play a significant role in shaping public perceptions of terrorism and global conflicts.
