Abstract

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2026. In this edition readers will find ten articles plus one book review proposing an idea of how culture survives modernization. The four articles (1, 2, 4, and 8 show how culture and ecology or culture and traditions can reshape collective memory and identity. Two articles: 6 and 7 discuss Japanese culture: first elderly people show learning a foreign language can keep their spirit of life; second Japanese urban culture in contemporary context. Last but not least three articles (3, 5, 9, and 10) describe three different situations: roads represent symbolic dimensions; priestly ministry and celibacy is more than just personal resilience; and regional culture learning in school is a way to understand the five principles of Pancasila.

Abstract

This study examines Roblox as a digital cultural space that constructs and represents adolescent identity through Umberto Eco's semiotic approach. Roblox functions not only as a game platform but also as an open text comprising visual signs, social symbols, and complex narratives. This studi is based on a literature review from nine prior empirical studies, this research analyzes how avatars, virtual environments, Robux economy, and user communities shape diverse systems of meaning. Findings show that Roblox serves as a site for identity construction, simulation of social values, and reproduction of dominant discourses such as capitalism and gender performance. The study concludes that Roblox opens up possibilities for symbolic awareness and digital literacy education through participatory experiences. It underscores the importance of semiotic literacy to navigate today's complex and evolving digital culture.

Abstract

Wim Wenders, in his latest film Perfect Days (2023), presents an everyday aesthetic experience conveyed through a visually striking aesthetic characterized by a "peaceful" gaze. This study aims to explore the everyday aesthetics depicted in Perfect Days, which align with traditional Japanese aesthetics, specifically wabi-sabi. The analysis is framed using Todd McGowan's Cinema of Desire theory. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method to examine the subject and utilizes a Psychoanalytic approach for analysis. The findings reveal that object ‘a’ in Perfect Days is highlighted through mise-en-scène and music, as these two cinematic elements facilitate a moment of reconnecting with lost desire. The everyday aesthetics and object a in the film can be categorized into three key areas that convey meaning and represent various desires: the beauty of time, the romance of trauma and loss, and the absence of material drives.

Abstract

Celibacy is a defining vow in the life of Catholic priests, requiring thorough preparation and ongoing commitment. While celibacy enables priests to devote themselves fully to ministry, it also presents challenges that can influence their fidelity to priesthood. This study aimed to explore how Catholic priests experience, sustain, and interpret their vow of celibacy within their ministry. Using a transcendental phenomenological design, ten diocesan priests from Pagadian, representing junior, middle, and senior clergy, were purposively selected and interviewed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, validated with participant feedback, and analyzed thematically while bracketing researcher biases. The findings reveal that priests prepared for celibacy during seminary formation, but continued to face difficulties such as loneliness, temptation, and societal pressures. They relied on coping mechanisms, supportive relationships, and spiritual aspirations to remain faithful to their vow. Despite challenges, the participants affirmed their commitment to priestly ministry and identified celibacy as both a struggle and a source of deeper spiritual growth. The study concludes that sustaining celibacy requires not only personal resilience but also strong formation programs and community support. These insights are significant in addressing celibacy as a central factor in priestly vocation and retention.
TRANSLATING THE “PREPOSITION + WHICH” CONSTRUCTION IN ENGLISH LEGAL TEXTS INTO INDONESIAN Jaya, Doni

Abstract

Legal text translation is challenging because of its emphasis on semantic and syntactic faithfulness, while ST structures do not always have correspondent TL equivalents. One of such structures is the English “preposition + which” (PW) construction. This construction can be difficult to translate into Indonesian because the language does not always have ready-to-use connectors to produce a structurally faithful translation, often forcing translators to take the easy way of using ungrammatical and unnatural connectors which becomes the hallmark of the Indonesian legalese style. This research seeks to examine various ways to translate PW constructions in a more grammatical and natural way, which involves some degree of creative modification, as an alternative to the legalese style. This research is prescriptive in nature because it aims to promote the use of more natural and reader friendly style without sacrificing accuracy. Data in the form of English sentences containing various PW constructions were collected from several legal documents and then translated using the “legalese” and “creative” style for comparison purposes. The data contain various PW connectors such as in which, on which, at which, of which, to which, from which, by which, for which, under which, with which, without which, during which, and beyond which. The creative versions were then analyzed and discussed to generate a set of strategies to translate PW constructions, resulting in six major strategies and at least ten minor strategies which can be applied in combination with each other to produce accurate, natural, and grammatical translations. These findings are expected to reveal the complexity of PW construction translation and to help future translators to deal with similar STs.

Abstract

In recent decades, global efforts to reduce maternal mortality have become a primary focus in health development agendas. However, challenges in providing quality healthcare remain complex, especially in resource-limited countries. Adrienne E. Strong’s book, Documenting Death: Maternal Mortality and the Ethics of Care in Tanzania, offers an ethnographic perspective on the relationship between bureaucratic structures, resource constraints, and healthcare practices in Tanzania. This review examines Strong’s key concepts, such as good enough care, documented care, and fierce care, which highlight the ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare workers in delivering care under administrative pressures and limited facilities. The critique of the ethnographic approach in this book also addresses its limitations in offering broader systemic solutions and its relevance to other national contexts, such as Indonesia. This paper seeks to connect Strong’s analysis with global maternal health challenges, emphasizing the importance of understanding the interaction between global policies and local practices to improve maternal and infant healthcare quality.

Abstract

The transformation of space in postcolonial cities extends beyond the restoration of old buildings; it involves cultural practices that reshape collective memory and identity. Through adaptive reuse, colonial-era heritage spaces are revitalised as social hubs. This study examines Post Kantoor cafe, a former colonial post office turned into a “third place” within urban spatial culture. Using qualitative methods—visual observation, spatial documentation, and a literature review—the study finds that nostalgic aesthetics, evident in antique artefacts, colonial atmospheres, and curated visuals, foster emotional connections across generations and social classes. More than a site of consumption, the cafe becomes a space for dialogue, cultural exchange, and reinterpretation of history. These findings show that adaptive reuse in postcolonial contexts can produce inclusive, meaningful spaces rich in cultural symbolism.

Abstract

Archaeological studies on roads in Indonesia remain relatively limited, although international research indicates that roads are not merely transportation infrastructure, but also embody social, political, and symbolic dimensions. A significant example is the ancient road in Banten Lama, which connects the Surosowan Palace with the artificial lake of Tasikardi. This study aims to present archaeological data and identify the distinctive characteristics of royal roads compared to common roads, applying a landscape archaeology approach within a post-processual paradigm. The research stages include data collection, processing, and interpretation through qualitative methods, encompassing literature review and field observation. The analysis shows that the Surosowan–Tasikardi road contains archaeological evidence reflecting the existence of a political entity with mastery of complex irrigation technology and structured road construction. It is concluded that the road functioned not only as a transportation route but also as a means of royal control over territories and resources, thus qualifying as a representative example of a “sultan’s road” in Indonesia.

Abstract

Ageing is likely to become a 'gender issue' with a big number of women surviving into very old age in almost all the countries of the world. Japanese women have longer longevity than Japanese men. What is the secret behind the higher lifespan of Japanese women compared to Japanese men? Is it related to their ikigai? In this qualitative approach research, we chose the subjects as elderly men and women who participated in Easy English Conversation Courses in Kitakyushu Nenchousha Daigakkou (Kitakyushu Elder University). We assumed that to participate in Easy English Conversation Courses may change their life and enhance ikigai among the elderly, but there are gender differences in their elderly learning motivation. Understanding gender-specific factors related to ikigai in older adults could be beneficial in improving their overall well-being.

Abstract

This study explores the potential for integrating Lonto Leok culture as a character education model based on Pancasila values in schools. This research employs a qualitative approach utilizing a case study methodology. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis in Manggarai communities and schools that have integrated the Lonto Leok cultural tradition into their learning processes. The data analysis confidently employed a triangulation approach to solidify the validity of the research outcomes, ensuring their credibility, dependability, transferability, and confirmability. The research results indicate that the values espoused in Lonto Leok culture, including religiosity, deliberation, unity, peace, and justice, are highly consistent with the principles of Pancasila. The integration of these values in school learning can enhance students' comprehension and appreciation of Pancasila while also reinforcing their character through pertinent and contextual approaches. This research proposes the utilization of Lonto Leok culture as a means of fortifying Pancasila-based character education in the context of the challenges posed by globalization. This report recommends that the Indonesian Ministry of Education adopt a new curriculum to strengthen Pancasila education in primary and secondary schools.
