Abstract

Adaptation is a process through which individuals adjust to new environments, including first-year college students who must navigate an educational system that differs substantially from high school. This study aimed to examine whether residential status moderates the relationship between peer social support and adjustment among first-year college students. A moderation correlational design was employed using a survey method for data collection. A total of 194 first-year students at Hang Tuah University participated in the study through a saturated sampling technique. The instruments used were the Self-Adjustment Scale and the Peer Social Support Scale, both developed by the researcher, with a reliability coefficient of 0.887. Analysis using PROCESS Model 1 indicated that residential status did not moderate the relationship between peer social support and adjustment. This finding suggests that whether students live with their parents or not does not significantly alter the strength of the relationship between peer social support and adjustment in first-year college students.

Abstract

Clove farmers who were able to manage their own psychological well-being influenced their work motivation, enabling them to achieve optimal harvest outcomes as expected. One factor that increased psychological well-being was family support. This study aimed to determine the relationship between family support and psychological well-being among clove farmers in Sidoasri Village. Participants were selected using a non-probability sampling method with purposive sampling. The subjects in this study were 100 clove farmers in Sidoasri Village, aged 20 to 68 years, who lived in the same household with their parents, family members, or relatives. Data were collected using a quantitative correlational method, with paper-based tests distributed directly from house to house. This method was used to examine the relationship between variables using scale-based measurements. The instruments employed were a psychological well-being scale modified from Juwita (2024) and a family support scale modified from Kasih (2021). Data were analyzed using Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The findings indicated that the hypothesis was accepted, meaning that there was a positive relationship between family support and psychological well-being among clove farmers in Sidoasri Village.

Abstract

The growing phenomenon of internet use among students has brought both positive and negative impacts on their lives. One of the negative impacts that has begun to emerge is internet addiction, which is characterized by excessive use that interferes with social and emotional aspects. Students experiencing internet addiction are suspected to have lower emotional management abilities. This study aims to determine the influence of internet addiction on emotional intelligence among students at SMK Muhammadiyah Sangasanga. The research employed a quantitative method with simple linear regression analysis. The subjects consisted of 226 students selected through total sampling technique. The instruments used were the Internet Addiction Scale (18 items) and the Emotional Intelligence Scale (26 items). The results showed a significant negative effect of internet addiction on emotional intelligence, with a regression coefficient of -0.718 and a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). The R Square value of 0.430 indicates that 43% of the variance in emotional intelligence is influenced by internet addiction. Thus, the higher the level of internet addiction, the lower the level of emotional intelligence among students.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between academic resilience and peer social support with academic adjustment among first-year medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University X Surabaya. The transition from high school to university often required substantial adaptation to changes in curriculum, learning methods, and academic expectations. These conditions posed challenges for new students to adjust to the dynamics of university life and the increasing complexity of academic demands. The study employed a quantitative correlational approach using a simple random sampling technique that involved 125 students from the 2024 cohort. Data were collected through Google Forms using three instruments: the Academic Resilience Scale with 18 valid items, the Peer Social Support Scale with 47 valid items, and the Academic adjustment Scale with 42 valid items. The results showed a significant relationship between academic resilience and peer social support with academic adjustment. Partially, academic resilience contributed, while peer social support contributed. These findings emphasized that students’ academic adjustment was influenced not only by individual resilience but also by positive social support within their peer relationships.

Abstract

Hopelessness is a feeling of despair or loss of hope for the future in finding employment. One way to overcome hopelessness is by improving self-esteem. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and hopelessness in job-seeking among generation Z fresh graduates in Yogyakarta City. This study employs a quantitative correlational approach using purposive sampling, involving 201 recent Gen Z graduates in Yogyakarta aged 20–29 who are currently unemployed. The research instruments used the Self-Esteem Scale and the Hopelessness Scale administered Google Form. The results of the hypothesis test using Pearson’s product-moment correlation test indicate a highly significant negative relationship between self-esteem and hopelessness among Generation Z recent graduates in Yogyakarta, thus the research hypothesis is accepted. This implies that strengthening positive self-esteem can serve as a strategy for recent graduates to reduce feelings of hopelessness during the job search process.

Abstract

The issue of mental toughness among fishermen remains under-recognized by the public. Income instability due to the lean season, extreme weather, and price fluctuations puts fishermen under significant economic pressure. This study aims to understand the dynamics of fishermen's mental toughness in dealing with income instability. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Participants were three active fishermen with at least five years of fishing experience. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, and their validity was tested using technical triangulation, member checking, peer debriefing, and audit trails. The results showed that fishermen's mental toughness is formed through four main dimensions (control, challenge, commitment, and confidence) with different dynamics for each participant. Fishermen with longer experience demonstrated resilience based on stability and economic planning, while fishermen with shorter experience demonstrated resilience based on adaptation and innovation, particularly in the utilization of marketing technology. These findings confirm that fishermen's mental toughness is influenced by work experience, economic adaptation strategies, and the social context of the coastal environment. This research contributes to the development of mental toughness studies in the fishing profession and becomes the basis for formulating empowerment programs and psychosocial assistance for coastal communities.

Abstract

Early adulthood is a developmental phase that presents various demands, making self-confidence an important psychological aspect. The role of the father is one factor that shapes self-confidence. However, the burden of caregiving duties often lays on mothers, so fathers are often less actively involved in childcare. This study aimed to determine the role of the father on self-confidence in early adulthood. A survey method with accidental sampling was used, involving 350 early adult respondents aged 18-25 years old, and using father’s role scale and self-confidence scale. Data analysis using simple linear regression showed the influence of father’s role on self-confidence in early adulthood. It also showed that father’s role contributed 5.6% to self-confidence of early adults. This could be concluded that the role of father, even though small, could be a contributing factor to determine self-confidence, supported by other psychological factors.

Abstract

Scales measuring anxiety have been extensively studied in Indonesia; however, research on social appearance anxiety in the Indonesian context remains scarce. Social appearance anxiety is the anxiety that arises from the fear of being negatively evaluated by others regarding one’s physical appearance. The limited discussion regarding such measurement tools indicates a need for a valid and reliable instrument. The measurement tool that can be used to assess this anxiety is the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale, which consists of 16 items. The purpose of this study is to adapt and test the validity and reliability of this measurement tool so that it can be used in the Indonesian context. This study involved 320 participants meeting the criteria of being women over 18 years of age and unmarried. Analysis using the Jamovi software revealed that the model did not yet fit well, necessitating modifications through item elimination. The results of the modifications showed a TLI parameter of 0.905 and a CFI of 0.905 in the model fit. Additionally, the RMSEA was 0.106, a value that still falls within the category of not achieving model fit. Thus, this measurement tool has the potential for use in Indonesia but requires revisions to several items.

Abstract

Climate change requires adaptation at both policy and household levels. This study examines the link between future time perspective and household adaptation capacity. It also explores its indirect role connecting pro-environmental attitudes and adaptation capacity in Aceh. Using a correlational quantitative design with a simple mediation model, 307 urban households were recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using instruments measuring pro-environmental attitudes, future time perspective, and adaptation capacity, and analyzed with a bootstrap-based mediation test in JASP. Results show that pro-environmental attitudes do not directly affect household adaptation capacity, but future time perspective has a positive effect. The relationship between pro-environmental attitudes and future time perspective is not significant, but the indirect effect is small and supported by the bootstrap confidence interval (β = 0.039; 95% CI [0.005, 0.096]). These findings suggest that a future-oriented perspective may strengthen household readiness for climate change.

Abstract

Cinderella Complex is a psychological construct describing women's tendency toward psychological dependency on external protective figures, systematically impeding self-actualization. This study examined the simultaneous and partial contributions of self-concept and permissive-indulgent parenting style to Cinderella Complex tendency among female university students. A quantitative non-experimental predictive design was employed with 80 active female students (aged 18–25 years) from six universities in Surabaya, recruited via accidental sampling. Instruments included the Cinderella Complex Tendency Scale (α = .965), the Self-Concept Scale (α = .978), and the Permissive-Indulgent Parenting Scale (α = .966). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that both predictors simultaneously and significantly predicted Cinderella Complex (F(2,77) = 224.803, p < .001, R² = .854). Partially, self-concept was the stronger predictor (β = .724, p < .001) compared to permissive-indulgent parenting (β = .231, p = .004). These findings indicate that intervention programs should prioritize positive self-concept reconstruction alongside balanced parenting education to reduce psychological dependency among women in emerging adulthood.
