Abstract

This community service article examines the transformation of village land into bamboo-paranet community greenhouses as a low-cost solution to reduce household expenditures and strengthen food security. The service methodology uses Participatory Action Research (PAR) and religious social capital as a replication protocol. The activities are carried out through the PAR cycle (to know, to plan, to action, to reflect), utilizing socio-economic mapping and income mapping, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) using problem-tree and hope-tree analysis, and technical assistance for the development of bamboo-rack paranet greenhouses. Initial results indicate an increase in the availability of fresh kitchen supplies at the household level, strengthening the role of women in food management for both families and communities, and a reduction in daily household expenditures as reliance on the market for vegetables and spices decreases. Additionally, the integration of religious social capital has proven to enhance compliance with duty schedules and usage regulations. Pre–post quantitative data related to household expenditures and harvest volume will be presented in the final manuscript to measure the effectiveness of the community greenhouse model as a low-cost/high-impact intervention within the framework of the six dimensions of food security.

Abstract

Village religious study groups represent a long-standing form of non-formal Islamic education in rural Muslim communities. However, in Senduro Village, Lumajang Regency, their educational and social functions have weakened because of declining attendance, repetitive program formats, and limited community involvement in program governance. This community service article examines the revitalization of village religious study groups through a monthly khatmil Qur’an program integrated with thematic religious lectures and participatory reflection. The program employed Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving religious leaders, study-group administrators, and community members in problem identification, collaborative planning, implementation, reflection, and evaluation. Data were collected through participatory observation, informal interviews, documentation, and pre-test and post-test assessments covering three dimensions: revitalization of religious study activities, community participation and religious awareness, and program sustainability. Descriptive analysis showed an increase in the average score from 59% before the program to 85% after implementation. Improvements were evident in the regularity and diversity of religious study activities, congregational attendance, discussion participation, understanding of religious values, and collective commitment to continuing the program independently. These findings indicate that monthly khatmil Qur’an can function not merely as a ritual practice but as a participatory learning mechanism that strengthens non-formal Islamic education, social cohesion, and sustainable community-based religious engagement in rural settings. The model offers a practical framework for community service programs seeking to revitalize local religious traditions through dialogic, contextual, and community-owned educational practices.

Abstract

This study addresses Indonesia’s critically low literacy, evidenced by PISA scores below OECD averages and a reading culture index of 0.001. It examines the Gerakan Satu Madrasah Satu Buku or “One Madrasah One Book Movement” (GSM SAKU) in Lumajang Regency as a participatory intervention to strengthen literacy management among pesantren-based madrasah teachers. Employing Participatory Action Research (PAR), the program engaged 254 participants, including teachers and administrators, in a structured cycle of collaborative planning, book writing, intensive mentoring, and reflection, supported by a multi-stakeholder network. The intervention successfully positioned teachers as knowledge producers, resulting in published books documenting pedagogical practices and transitioning literacy activities from ad hoc to managed institutional programs. Outcomes included enhanced teacher professional confidence, the formation of school literacy teams, and strengthened collaborative networks. The study concludes that a systematic, PAR-based model supported by institutional collaboration can effectively transform literacy management. It provides a replicable framework for improving Islamic education quality and contributes to discourse on knowledge management and teacher professional development in religious educational contexts.

Abstract

Rural solid waste management remains a persistent governance and public-health challenge in Indonesia, particularly in communities where disposal infrastructure is limited and open dumping has become normalised. This article examines how Participatory Action Research (PAR) fostered community-based solid waste management in Pandansari Hamlet, Tigasan Wetan Village, Probolinggo Regency. Using a qualitative-dominant design, the study integrated participatory observation, social mapping, focus group discussions, visual documentation, and community reflection conducted from December 2024 to January 2025. The PAR cycle comprised trust-building, problem diagnosis, deliberative planning, collective action, and reflective evaluation. The intervention identified three interrelated barriers: the transition from organic to mixed household waste, dependence on external infrastructure, and the normalisation of unsanitary disposal practices. By mobilising religious networks, neighbourhood leadership, and gotong royong, residents implemented clean-ups in three critical zones and established a small communal disposal facility. The findings show that PAR strengthened environmental awareness, enabled local consensus, and converted community concern into practical action. The article contributes to community-based waste-management literature by demonstrating that rural sustainability initiatives depend not only on technical facilities but also on the activation of social capital, locally legitimate leadership, and culturally embedded collective learning. The study recommends institutional follow-up through RT/RW rules, village-supported waste facilities, and circular-economy mechanisms such as waste banks linked to local governance.

Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to strengthen literacy on the Unified Global Hijri Calendar (Kalender Hijriah Global Tunggal, KHGT) and basic operational hisab skills among members of a Muhammadiyah Islamic boarding school community in Makassar. The program was designed in response to the partner community’s need to understand the fiqh foundations, the Muhammadiyah tarjih methodology, astronomical arguments, and the practical use of official calendar information in religious and institutional life. The engagement employed Participatory Action Research (PAR) combined with a service-learning orientation through four phases: joint needs diagnosis, collaborative program planning, KHGT literacy and basic hisab training, and reflection-evaluation for follow-up planning. Thirty participants took part in the activity, consisting of students, teachers/ ustaz, mentors, and members of the pesantren community. Data were collected through participatory observation, documentation, participant feedback, and pre-test and post-test instruments based on KHGT literacy indicators. The results indicate a substantial descriptive improvement. The participants’ mean score increased from 49.3 in the pre-test to 89.3 in the post-test, representing a 40-point increase and an N-gain of 0.79, which falls into the high category. All participants obtained a minimum post-test score of 75, and 73.3% achieved scores of 85 or higher. Beyond cognitive improvement, the program generated direct outputs for the partner institution, including KHGT literacy materials, worksheets for practicing calendar interpretation, and an internal cadre-development plan. These findings suggest that pesantren-based KHGT literacy can serve as a community capacity-building strategy that enables religious communities to understand the global Islamic calendar in a scientific, sharia-based, practical, and sustainable manner.

Abstract

Women in Kadur Village, Pamekasan, depend on agricultural and tobacco industry sectors that are highly susceptible to economic changes, with 78% earning monthly incomes below one million rupiah. This research aims to empower women through bouquet arrangement training to build independence and creative economy. This qualitative research employs a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach that involves the community as active subjects in the research and empowerment process. Forty-five PKK members aged 18-55 years were purposively selected based on criteria of willingness to participate and commitment to follow the entire series of activities through consent agreements in Google Forms. The program was implemented in July 2025 through three PAR cycles: participatory planning through focus group discussions and community needs mapping, activity implementation in the form of intensive training covering arrangement techniques and basic entrepreneurship, and participatory reflection and evaluation to examine the impact of the empowerment program on women in Kadur Village. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and documentation of the empowerment process. Data analysis used thematic analysis techniques to identify patterns of change in participants’ skills, attitudes, and economic behavior. The research results show that 82% of participants were able to create market-quality bouquets, a mindset shift from passive workers to active entrepreneurs in 56% of participants, and 7 participants successfully received bouquet service orders within 2 weeks post-training. The PAR program proved effective in facilitating active community participation in identifying problems, designing solutions, and implementing sustainable socio-economic changes.
