Abstract

Malaria remains a public health problem in Indonesia. Controlling malaria vectors (Anopheles sp.) using synthetic larvicides carries the risk of developing resistance and environmental pollution, requiring natural alternatives from Japanese papaya leaves (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius). This study aimed to analyze the effect of concentration and exposure time of n-hexane extract of Japanese papaya leaves on mortality of Anopheles sp. larvae and to determine LC50 and LT50 values. The experimental method used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six concentrations (0%; 0.5%; 0.75%; 1%; 1.25%; and 1.5%) and four replications, using 20 third instar larvae for each experimental unit. Mortality observations were conducted after 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours of exposure, while morphological changes were observed using a digital microscope. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, LSD, and probit analysis. The results showed that n-hexane extract had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on larval mortality. 100% mortality was achieved at a concentration of 1.5%, followed by a concentration of 1.25% at 95% after 48 hours. The LC50 value obtained was 1.088% at 24 hours of exposure, while the fastest LT50 was at a concentration of 1.25% for 16.34 hours. Exposure to the extract also induced morphological damage, including body darkening, swollen thorax, severed digestive tract, and transparent body. Therefore, n-hexane extract of Japanese papaya leaves has the potential to be developed as an environmentally friendly natural biolarvicide.

Abstract

Way Kambas National Park (WKNP) in Lampung Province is one of Sumatra’s key lowland conservation areas, providing habitat for flagship mammal species including the sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), and sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatranus). This study aimed to analyze species diversity, relative abundance, and daily activity patterns of mammals in WKNP using secondary camera-trap data collected from 197 stations between 2007 and 2016. Records were screened to remove non-wildlife captures (humans, park staff, and unidentified images), then analyzed using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, record-frequency-based relative abundance, and an activity-pattern classification (diurnal, nocturnal, crepuscular, cathemeral) based on capture time. Analysis of 29,711 independent mammal records identified 37 species with a moderate diversity index (H’ = 2.00), dominated by wild boar (Sus scrofa, 37.6%) and barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak, 24.6%), while still encompassing threatened species such as the sumatran tiger, sumatran rhinoceros, malayan tapir, sunda clouded leopard, and sunda pangolin. Activity patterns fell into four categories: diurnal species (wild boar, barking deer, primates, treeshrews), crepuscular species (mouse/spotted mouse-deer, marbled cat), cathemeral species (sumatran tiger, elephant, sambar deer, sun bear, clouded leopard), and nocturnal species (tapir, sumatran rhinoceros, malay civet, and other small carnivores). The cathemeral activity pattern of the sumatran tiger found in this study (53.6% diurnal; 46.4% nocturnal records) is consistent with earlier findings at the same site. These results confirm the importance of WKNP as a diverse, high-conservation-value mammal habitat, and recommend standardizing future camera-trap monitoring effort to improve the accuracy of abundance estimates.

Abstract

Culinary small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are labor-intensive sectors in which workers are required to cope with a combination of physical and mental workload in their daily work activities. However, ergonomic studies in this sector remain limited and generally assess workload in a partial manner. This study aims to conduct an integrated assessment of physical and mental workload among workers in culinary SMEs using both physiological and subjective approaches. A quantitative observational design was employed and conducted among culinary SME workers. Physical workload was assessed using Cardiovascular Load (CVL) based on heart rate responses during work activities, while mental workload was evaluated using the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). The results indicate that workers in culinary SMEs experience moderate to high levels of physical workload, primarily due to manual activities and prolonged standing durations. In addition, NASA-TLX results reveal moderate to high levels of mental workload, with mental demand, temporal demand, and effort identified as the main contributing dimensions. These findings demonstrate that physical and mental demands occur simultaneously and interact within a single work system, potentially increasing the risk of work-related fatigue and reducing the sustainability of worker performance. This study highlights the importance of applying an integrated ergonomic approach in evaluating work systems in culinary SMEs. By combining physiological indicators and subjective perceptions, this study provides a more comprehensive understanding of workload characteristics and serves as a scientific basis for designing more ergonomic and sustainable work system improvements.

Abstract

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is an important food commodity with high economic value; however, the production of quality seedlings still faces obstacles due to the risk of pathogen contamination and the limitations of conventional propagation methods. In vitro tissue culture is an effective solution, but it remains dependent on synthetic plant growth regulators (PGRs) that are expensive and potentially harmful to the environment. Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) sprout extract can serve as an alternative natural PGR that is more environmentally friendly. This study aimed to determine the effect of mung bean sprout extract as a natural PGR on the in vitro growth of potato planlets and to identify the most optimal concentration. The study was designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five concentration levels of mung bean sprout extract: 0% (control), 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, each with five replicates. Parameters observed included the percentage of live planlets, planlet visualization, planlet height, number of leaves, root length, and stomatal density two weeks after planting. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's HSD test at a 5% significance level. The results showed that all planlets survived across all treatments at 100%. The application of mung bean sprout extract had no significant effect on planlet height, number of leaves, and root length, but significantly affected stomatal density. A concentration of 4% produced the highest stomatal density at 265.35 stomata/mm².
