Abstract

The Marebu Agung ceremony is one of the unique ritual sequences in the traditional wedding procession of the Bali Aga community in Binyan Village. This ceremony is performed after the entire core wedding sequence has been completed, with the primary purpose of uniting the bride and groom on a niskala (spiritual) level and obtaining ancestral blessings. This study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach to examine Marebu Agung from a Hindu theological perspective, integrating the theory of religious systems (Smith, 1989), structural functionalism (Parsons, 1951), and symbolic theory (Turner, 1982). Data were collected through in-depth interviews with customary leaders, pengulu (priests), the families of the couple, as well as participant observation during the ceremony. The analysis shows that Marebu Agung functions as both a medium for preserving the Bali Aga tradition and a cosmic unification between the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (the selves of the couple). The distinctive symbols and ceremonial instruments—such as the karangan babi (pork offerings), banten pembersihan (purification offerings), and natural elements like daun lumasih and sate lembat—hold profound philosophical meanings that reinforce the sacred value of marriage. The study finds that without Marebu Agung, the spiritual perfection of marriage is not fully achieved; this ceremony affirms the couple’s status as krama jangkepan and upholds the awig-awig (customary laws) of the village. Another finding highlights the strategic role of the customary village in safeguarding the continuity of this ritual. The conclusion emphasizes that Marebu Agung is a tangible manifestation of the principles of tri hita karana and the doctrine of panca sradha in Hindu household life, and that it remains highly relevant in strengthening the cultural identity of the Bali Aga community. As a recommendation, it is proposed that local religious and customary institutions adopt this research as a reference for developing marriage tradition policies, including guiding the younger generation to understand the sacred meaning of Marebu Agung.

Abstract

The Sang Hyang Kamahāyānikan text is one of the most important ancient texts in the Balinese Hindu religious and cultural traditions. Popular culture and modern lifestyles spread through modern technology have the potential to erode the younger generation's understanding of the spiritual values contained in the Sang Hyang Kamahāyānikan text. This condition raises concerns about the extinction of knowledge about the text, so that the cultural identity of the Hindu community in Bali could slowly fade. The existence of the Sang Hyang Kamahāyānikan text also has deep semiotic value, where the symbols contained in this text represent the principles of Hindu life, such as karmaphala (the results of actions) and moksa (liberation from the cycle of life). These symbols are used as guidelines in implementing Hindu teachings which are believed to help people achieve a more harmonious life. The theory used to analyze the problem is: Semiotic theory, and theory of meaning. This type of research is qualitative, with a text study approach for primary and secondary data sources, using observation data collection techniques, interviews, literature studies and documentation supported by data collection techniques using the philosophy of nyanya darsana, namely catur pramana. The data is analyzed qualitatively descriptively, which is described systematically and structured in five chapters using refined Indonesian spelling. The results of the study state that first the structure of the teachings of the Sang Hyang Kamahāyānikan text is: The basic structure of the teachings of Tri Aksara (Kaya, Wak, Cita) Tatalaku Tapa and Meditation (Vinaya, Three pillars, Cila Samadhi, Prajna) The concept of Mandala (Kamadhatu, Rupadhatu, Arupadhatu) Philosophical teachings (Guiding Teacher). Second The meaning of the teachings of the Sang Hyang Kamahāyānikan text includes: Theological meaning (Ontological) of the essence of divinity, Hindu Buddhist Tradition of the Archipelago. Third the relevance of the teachings of the former Sang Hyang Kamahāyānikan for contemporary Hindu theology is: The concept of Divinity, One God, God the source of everything, God is everywhere, God who Acintya. Interfaith tolerance and harmony, Hindu-Buddhist synthesis, holistic perspective. Ethical and spiritual guidelines Keywords: Sang Hyang Kamahāyānikan, Hindu Teologi

Abstract

The lontar Siwa Sasana (also referred to as Siwa Sesana in parts of the secondary literature) is an Old Javanese-Balinese sasana text that regulates the conduct, obligations, and, crucially, the ritual legitimacy of Śaiva religious practitioners (sadhaka). Departing from prior studies that read Siwa Sasana solely as a treatise on pedagogical ethics, this article argues that the text is fundamentally concerned with the validity of the guru-acārya's sacramental authority within the tantric initiation (dīkṣā) system, such that readings anchored exclusively in the modern Hindu Susila framework (Tri Kaya Parisudha, Panca Yama Brata, Panca Niyama Brata, Asta Brata, Catur Paramita) risk losing the text's tantric-sacramental register. Using hermeneutic textual analysis and a philological-comparative approach to the official translated edition of Siwa Sasana (Tim Penerjemah Kantor Dokumentasi Budaya Bali (I G. A. Rai Arnita I W. Dunia I. B. K. Sindu I G. K. Dalem & I W. Sukayasa), 1996) alongside Old Javanese-Balinese Śaiva sources (Acri, 2006, 2011, 2018; Soebadio, 1971), the article shows that the guru's qualifications, prohibitions, obligations, and the disciple-selection system correspond partially, but not wholly or historically neutrally, with the Susila framework: some concepts (trikaya paramārtha, and terms corresponding to Catur Paramita) are explicitly textual, while the Panca Yama/Niyama Brata nomenclature familiar from modern Balinese Hindu education does not appear verbatim in the primary text and should therefore be flagged as an interpretive lens rather than an indigenous category. The article also corrects a miscount of the guru's qualifications in prior scholarship and foregrounds dīkṣā as sangaskara, a tantric purification involving ritual apparatus (bhasma, siwapakarana), rather than a merely administrative age requirement. Keywords: Siwa Sasana; Hindu Susila; Śaiva tantra; guru-śiṣya paramparā; dīkṣā; sangaskara

Abstract

This article presents an epistemological critique of the decline of electoral democracy in Indonesia through a comparative philosophical hermeneutic analysis that brings together pramāṇavāda with the latest empirical-political literature on cyber-troops and algorithmic manipulation in Indonesia’s digital public sphere. Unlike conventional media-sociological studies, which stop at superficial political-economic analysis, this article dissects three epistemic instruments that have been systematically undermined, namely śabda pramāṇa (authentic testimony), pratyakṣa (direct sensory perception), and viveka (critical discernment). The corruption of these three, it is argued here, produces bhrānti jñāna, that is, erroneous beliefs that structurally resemble error (rather than mere ignorance), which differ from ordinary errors in that they are institutionalised and continuously reinforced by algorithmic incentives. The contribution of this article is specific, not merely thematic, in that pramāṇavāda, through the āpta criterion in śabda pramāṇa, ties epistemic validity to the moral character of the witness. This constitutes a normative link not found in more formal contemporary analytic theories of testimony. Through this link, this framework is able to explain why sponsored disinformation is doubly corrupt: it is both propositionally false and morally illegitimate at the source level. As a practical implication, this article proposes a reconceptualisation of critical civic literacy based on viveka-khyāti, with the explicit caveat that the extension of this term from the soteriological context of Sāṃkhya-yoga to the realm of digital literacy is a deliberate analogical extension, not a literal interpretation.

Abstract

This study examines religious coexistence between Hinduism and Buddhism at Goa Gajah Temple, Bali, through the perspective of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s theory of social construction and its relevance to strengthening religious moderation. The study employs a qualitative-interpretive approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review. Data were analyzed by interpreting archaeological remains, religious symbols, historical contexts, and information from relevant informants. The findings indicate that the coexistence of Śaiva and Buddhist traditions at Goa Gajah can be understood through the processes of externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Archaeological evidence, including lingga, Ganesha, bathing structures, stupas, Dhyani Buddha statues, and Hariti, demonstrates the presence of both traditions within a shared sacred landscape. This coexistence reflects values of tolerance, non-violence, acceptance of local traditions, and shared social life, which remain relevant to contemporary religious moderation. Keywords: Goa Gajah; religious coexistence; Śaiva-Buddhist; social construction; religious moderation.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in emulating human cognition has spark debate surrounding machine consciousness, leading to existential crises and misconceptions regarding the technology's moral status. This qualitative study aims to analyze the boundaries between AI computational logic and true consciousness through the philosophical framework of Sāṁkhya Darśana. Utilizing a textual and contextual hermeneutic approach based on library research, data were gathered from Īśvara Kṛṣṇa's classical text Sāṁkhya Kārikā alongside relevant literature on AI and Sāṁkhya philosophy. The findings reveal that all AI components ranging from physical hardware to cognitive processing algorithms (synthetic Buddhi/Mahat, Ahaṁkāra, and Manas) reside entirely within the realm of Prakṛti (insentient matter). AI merely replicates data processing and discrimination functions without reflecting Puruṣa (pure consciousness). Axiologically and ethically, AI possesses neither moral agency nor rights; ethical responsibility for technological impacts rests entirely on human operators. This study concludes that AI must be positioned as a supportive tool for humanity, while true dignity and consciousness remain exclusive to living beings.

Abstract

Contemporary developments in haṭha yoga tend to emphasize āsana, flexibility, physical fitness, and bodily health as primary foci, which can obscure the interconnectedness of the body, vital energy, mind, and transformation of consciousness as conceptualized in classical haṭha yoga literature. This study aims to identify the components of the haṭha yoga method in the Gorakṣaśatakam, analyze the functional relationships among these components, and reconstruct the systematic structure of the method articulated in the text. The study employs a qualitative approach through library research and textual analysis. The critical edition of the Gorakṣaśatakam by Swami Kuvalayananda and S. A. Shukla serves as the primary source. The data are analyzed through close textual reading, coding, categorization, and analysis of the relationships among the identified components. Data validity is ensured through source triangulation and critical examination of textual readings. The findings demonstrate that the haṭha yoga method in the Gorakṣaśatakam constitutes an integrative system structured according to ṣaḍaṅgayoga, comprising āsana, prāṇasaṃyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā, dhyāna, and samādhi. These six limbs establish functional and transformational relationships that integrate the body, prāṇa, mind, and consciousness. Āsana functions as the foundation for physical conditioning; prāṇasaṃyāma regulates prāṇa; pratyāhāra directs awareness inward; dhāraṇā and dhyāna deepen the regulation and concentration of awareness; and samādhi represents the culmination of this integration, leading toward advayatva, mukti, and parama pada. This reconstruction demonstrates that the Gorakṣaśatakam does not present haṭha yoga as a collection of isolated techniques, but rather as a coherent sādhanā system oriented toward the transformation of consciousness and spiritual liberation.
