Abstract

This research is part of the study of pragmatics, namely illocutionary speech acts. This research focuses on explaining illocutionary speech acts contained in the novel by Nawal El Saadawi entitled Perempuan di Titik Nol. The analysis of speech acts prioritizes language through its actual speakers. Illocutionary speech acts are defined as speech acts that contain intent and function or speech power. In an illocutionary speech act, the utterance gives rise to an action. Illocutionary speech acts are divided into five types, namely assertive, directive, expressive, declarative, and commissive illocutionary speech acts. The data obtained for this research are conversational utterances containing elements of illocutionary speech acts in the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol by Nawal El Saadawi. The research approach uses two methods, namely a pragmatic theoretical approach and a qualitative descriptive methodological approach. In collecting data, the researcher applied the listening method with advanced techniques of free listening and note-taking techniques. Meanwhile, for data analysis, the pragmatic equivalent method was used with formal and informal methods as a form of presentation of the data presented. The research results found 147 utterances containing illocutionary speech acts in this novel.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the inner conflict experienced by the female protagonist, Alina Suhita, in the novel Hati Suhita by Khilma Anis using Karen Horney’s psychological perspective. The study is motivated by the complexity of the psychological struggles faced by the main character in dealing with marital pressures, family expectations, and socio-cultural demands within a pesantren environment. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis. The data source was the novel Hati Suhita by Khilma Anis, while the research data consisted of textual excerpts depicting the protagonist’s inner conflicts. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques and subsequently analyzed based on Karen Horney’s theory of neurotic tendencies. The findings reveal that Suhita’s inner conflict is influenced by marital pressures, family demands, social expectations, as well as cultural and religious values that shape her personality. These conflicts are manifested through three neurotic tendencies: moving toward people, moving against people, and moving away from people. The tendency of moving toward people is reflected in her obedience, self-sacrifice, and need for acceptance. The tendency of moving against people appears in her efforts to maintain self-respect, assertiveness, and courage in confronting pressure. Meanwhile, the tendency of moving away from people is shown through emotional withdrawal, solitude, and the pursuit of inner peace. The findings indicate that the protagonist’s inner conflict is dynamic and functions as a form of psychological adjustment to basic anxiety and socio-cultural pressures throughout the narrative.

Abstract

This study examines compounding in exposition texts written by Grade XI students of SMA Swasta Anastasia. The study is motivated by the importance of word formation processes in enriching vocabulary and improving students’ writing skills, particularly in expressing ideas clearly and systematically. This research aims to identify the forms and meanings of compound words used in students’ exposition texts. A qualitative descriptive method with content analysis was employed, and the data were analyzed based on the concept of compounding in morphological studies. The findings reveal that students use various types of compound words, including noun–noun combinations, adjective–noun combinations, and reduplication forms that produce new meanings. The results indicate that compounding contributes to meaning clarification and enhances students’ ability to communicate ideas effectively through written texts. However, students’ competence in using compound words is still developing and influenced by their linguistic environment and learning experiences. This study contributes to morphology research and Indonesian language education by highlighting the role of word formation in students’ writing development.

Abstract

This study examines the emergence of localized English expressions in Indonesian social media discourse, highlighting how English is adapted and reinterpreted in multilingual digital contexts. While previous studies on English in Indonesia have primarily focused on formal domains such as education and language policy, limited attention has been given to informal online communication where linguistic innovation is highly visible. This study aims to analyze how English lexical items are re-semanticized and creatively transformed by Indonesian users on social media platforms. The study employed a qualitative approach using data collected from Instagram posts and comments, focusing on selected examples of English-derived expressions such as boba, gas, voucher, server, and suamiable. The analysis compares the conventional meanings of these terms in Inner Circle English with their localized meanings in Indonesian usage. The findings reveal that English functions as a flexible linguistic resource, undergoing processes of semantic shift, metaphorical extension, and lexical blending. These localized forms reflect users’ creativity as well as their ability to adapt global linguistic resources to local cultural contexts. The study concludes that English in Indonesian social media is not merely borrowed but actively reconstructed, contributing to the dynamic development of English in the Expanding Circle.

Abstract

Fear of making mistakes is one of the psychological factors that may hinder students’ participation in English speaking activities. In vocational high school settings, speaking competence is particularly important because students are expected to communicate effectively in both academic and professional contexts. However, many learners remain reluctant to speak English due to concerns about making errors. Understanding this phenomenon is essential for supporting students’ oral language development. This study investigated students’ fear of making mistakes in English speaking performance at SMK PGRI Sumbermanjing, East Java, Indonesia. The study aimed to explore the factors contributing to students’ fear of making mistakes and examine how this fear affected their speaking performance in classroom activities. A qualitative case study design was employed. Twenty students were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes. The findings revealed four major factors associated with students’ fear of making mistakes: fear of pronunciation errors, fear of negative evaluation from peers, limited vocabulary knowledge, and fear of teacher correction. These factors influenced students’ speaking performance by reducing confidence, increasing hesitation, limiting classroom participation, and encouraging avoidance of speaking opportunities. Fear of negative evaluation and pronunciation-related concerns were reported most frequently among participants. In conclusion, fear of making mistakes remains an important challenge affecting students’ English speaking performance. Creating supportive classroom environments and providing meaningful speaking opportunities may help students participate more confidently in English communication activities.

Abstract

Bilingual instruction is a learning strategy that can help students understand learning materials while bridging the gap between the language used at school and the language spoken in daily life. This study aims to analyze the effect of bilingual instruction on students' understanding of the Ecosystem topic at SDK Gusung Karang, Koja Gete Village. The study was motivated by the fact that students predominantly use the Sikka language in their daily communication, making it difficult for them to understand lessons delivered solely in Indonesian. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research participants consisted of the fourth-grade homeroom teacher and fourth-grade students at SDK Gusung Karang. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that bilingual instruction has a positive impact on students' understanding of the Ecosystem topic. The use of the Sikka language helps students comprehend basic concepts, increases classroom participation, and enhances their confidence during the learning process. Meanwhile, Indonesian strengthens students' mastery of scientific terminology and academic language skills. Although students still experience difficulties in consistently using scientific terms in Indonesian, bilingual instruction improves their understanding and connects learning concepts with their real-life experiences. The effectiveness of this strategy depends on teachers' ability to manage language switching in a structured and consistent manner.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the morphological forms of slang, explain the processes of its formation, and analyze its frequency and distribution in the TikTok content of the account @shadirafirdausi. The study is motivated by the rapid development of slang on social media, particularly TikTok, as a platform where young people express identity, creativity, and social interaction. A qualitative descriptive method was employed using documentation techniques on three TikTok videos, including captions and comments with the highest numbers of views and likes during June–August 2025. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings identified 36 slang words and phrases classified into four morphological processes: phonological modification (30.6%), shortening (30.6%), affixation (25.0%), and compounding with foreign element adoption (13.9%). Phonological modification and shortening were the dominant processes, while affixation and English borrowings further enriched the language forms. These findings demonstrate that slang in @shadirafirdausi’s TikTok content is formed through creative, productive, and adaptive morphological processes that reflect the preference of young speakers for concise, expressive, and easily understood language in digital communication.

Abstract

Cultural values are life principles that guide Javanese society in acting. This article aims to analyze how Javanese cultural values are contained in the novel Sumirat Ing Mripat. The approach used is a semiotic approach from the perspective of Rolland Barthes. The analytical method used is Rolland Barthes’ semiotic theory. This analytical method consists of denotation, connotation, and myth. The analysis is carried out by linking the results of the interpretation of signs to five cultural value relationships. The semiotic approach is used to reveal the meaning and signs of Javanese cultural values. The novel Sumirat Ing Mripat was taken as a data source in this study. The results show that the novel Sumirat Ing Mripat represents cultural values. These values are the value of rationality in the relationship between humans and themselves, the value of piety in the relationship between humans and God, the value of non-rationality in the relationship between humans and others, the value of harmony in the relationship between humans and nature, and the value of deliberation in the relationship between humans and society. This study confirms that literary works function as a representation of the system of Javanese cultural values.
