Abstract

The society’s response to the process of Islamization in Indonesia takes a variety of forms, some accept Islam kaffah, some are accepting Islam half-heartedly, some express rejection of Islam. The research aims to present two kinds of Islam that exist in Indonesia, namely, syncretic Islam and puritanical Islam. This research uses a literature study to understand the concepts of syncretic Islam and puritanical Islam. Syncretic Islam has a soft character by mixing it with local culture. Meanwhile, puritan Islam offers a hard character by affirming its rejection of all forms of mysticism in Islam. Syncretism is a concept that seeks to combine elements of two or more religions with cultural aspects.

Abstract

The development of communication technology in modern mass media has shown significant progress. However, traditional media still has its own charm. The existence of traditional media remains popular because it not only serves as a means of conveying messages but also as a manifestation of values of belief and cultural heritage that are worth preserving. Therefore, cultural elements such as the village ritual continue to function as one form of traditional media for spreading religious teachings. In addition to conveying religious messages, this ritual also serves as an outlet for escaping the monotony of rapid modernization. As a result, traditional-based media for spreading religious teachings, such as the village ritual, have persisted to this day and received positive acceptance from society.

Abstract

Islamic preaching and Sharia law are important instruments in realizing a society that is in accordance with Islamic values. In the province of Aceh, Islamic preaching serves as the spiritual and intellectual foundation for supporting the comprehensive implementation of Sharia law. This study aims to identify the role of the government and religious institutions in strengthening da'wah (proselytizing) and the role of the Aceh government in supporting the implementation of a holistic Islamic sharia based on local wisdom. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative method. Data was sourced from observation, interviews, and documentation. Dakwah in Aceh is a socially and religiously integrated system, structurally and culturally, involving collaboration between the government, religious institutions, and the community. The Aceh government plays a central role in implementing Islamic law through various regulations and strategic programs such as Border Da'i, Jinayat Training, and strengthening the practice of worship. However, the implementation of Islamic law still faces multiple obstacles, so synergy and sustained commitment from all elements are needed to ensure that Islamic law is fully realized. Dakwah in Aceh is an integral part of implementing Islamic law, involving synergy among the government, religious institutions, and the general public. The government of Aceh itself plays a crucial role in the implementation of Islamic Sharia law, from policy-making to the actual implementation of Sharia programs. Although many strategic programs have been implemented, their execution still faces various challenges, making cross-sectoral collaboration essential to achieve a comprehensive implementation of Islamic Sharia law in the daily lives of the people of Aceh, known as the “Bumi Serambi Mekkah.”

Abstract

The transformation of da'wah communication in multicultural urban environments reflects the dynamic interaction between religious messages in diverse social contexts. This study investigates how da'wah communication practices evolve within urban Muslimah communities in Indonesia, with a focusing on their adaptation to multicultural challenges and opportunities. This research is a library study that aims to understand the transformation of Islamic Preaching Communication in a multicultural society. The findings show a significant shift from conventional and one-way da'wah delivery to an interactive, dialogical, and contextually adaptive communication model. This transformation is driven by the challenges of Multicultural Da'wah among Muslim Women's Communities, Da'wah Transformation in the Muslim Women's Community Environment, and the Role of Digital Media in Comprehensively Reaching the Audience. This study concludes that the transformation of da'wah communication and media is not only a necessity, but also a necessity in facing the complexity of a modern, multicultural society. The urban Muslim community in Indonesia proves that more inclusive, dialogical, and adaptive da'wah can be a unifying bridge amidst differences.

Abstract

Da’wah, as a means of conveying Islamic teachings, must adapt to the developments of the times. No longer limited to face-to-face interaction, da’wah can now be delivered through various media, one of which is print media. Da’wah bil qolam, or written da’wah, serves as an effective alternative for communicating religious messages. Books are a powerful medium for this purpose, as seen in the folk tale “Ande-Ande Lumut” by Arti Purbani. This study aims to analyze the content of da’wah messages found within the story. A significant background of this research is the declining reading interest among children, driven largely by the rapid advancement of digital technology. Children today are more inclined to engage with gadgets and online games than to develop literacy through reading. This research is qualitative in nature, using a content analysis approach and categorized as library research. The primary data source is the story of “Ande-Ande Lumut” from Arti Purbani’s book, while secondary sources include books, academic journals, scholarly articles, and relevant online resources. Data collection methods involved literature review, reading, and note-taking. The findings indicate that the folk tale contains a range of da’wah messages, including messages of aqidah (faith in Allah and destiny), sharia (worship and social transactions), and akhlaq (morality towards God and fellow humans). Among all the paragraphs, sharia messages are the most dominant, followed by akhlaq, and aqidah.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of foreign workers in the United States agricultural industry using the critical discourse analysis (CDA) model by Teun A. Dijk. Using a case study from a CNN Business article titled "America's Farmers Are in Desperate Need of Workers. Foreigners are the answer" (2016), this study explores how mass media shapes public opinion on employment and immigration issues. The Dijk model, which includes the structural dimensions of the text (macrostructure, superstructure, microstructure), social cognition, and social context, is used to uncover the symbolic discourse and ideological construction of the media. The analysis revealed that CNN Business systematically framed the labor shortage problem as an urgent national crisis, positioning foreign workers as the "saviors" of agricultural productivity by using positive diction and problem-solving narratives. The study also compared it to CNN Indonesia's article on the potential abuse of social assistance in regional elections, highlighting how the media shapes social realities and directs public opinion according to their respective ideological contexts. This study concludes that the mass media play an active role in shaping and directing public opinion through linguistic strategies and hidden rhetoric embedded in news texts. Therefore, critical media literacy is essential for the public to understand biased narratives and potential hidden agendas in media coverage.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of consumerism in the realm of death through the presence of modern cemeteries, which have emerged as new symbols of status and lifestyle in urban areas due to urbanization, land scarcity, and unequal access to burial spaces. This study aims to analyze how modern cemeteries reflect the symbolic construction of death and how this phenomenon interacts with the values of Islamic da’wah. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and a symbolic-cultural case study, this article explores narratives of spirituality, aesthetics, and symbolic capital. The analysis applies Jean Baudrillard’s theory of symbolic consumption and is linked to the perspective of Islamic da’wah. This study finds that modern cemeteries are not merely a solution to land scarcity, but also symbols of status shaped by spiritual and aesthetic narratives. This phenomenon reflects a paradox between Islamic values of simplicity and materialistic death practices, yet it also opens space for contextual da’wah. Islamic da’wah needs to adopt a more contextual and humanistic approach—not to reject the existence of modern cemeteries, but to offer spiritual guidance and educational values within them. In this way, Islamic teachings on simplicity, equality, and reflection on death can remain integrated within the realities of modern urban life.

Abstract

This research analyzes the central and fundamental role of nonverbal communication in shaping the main character, Dinda, in the film Titip Surat untuk Tuhan (Entrust a Letter to God). Instead of relying on dialogue, the film predominantly uses physical cues (facial expressions, body movements, eye gaze, and touch) to construct Dinda’s complex inner narrative. The analysis reveals that changes across four nonverbal domains —kinesics (body movements and facial expressions), oculesics (eye gaze), haptics (touch), and proxemics (physical distance) — are crucial in conveying the depth of her emotions and her struggle. Dinda’s shift in kinesics from nimble movements to slower and stiffer motions reflects her physical struggle. The change in her facial expressions from cheerful to melancholy, along with her empty gaze, narrates her emotional journey from hope to peaceful acceptance. Her tight hand-hold (haptics) with her father demonstrates warmth and deep dependence, while her chosen physical distance (proxemics) communicates isolation and a desire to hide her suffering. This study proves that body language is a more powerful and effective storytelling tool for arousing empathy and fostering a deeper understanding of character, thereby establishing nonverbal communication as the core of the film's emotional message.

Abstract

Abstract

Rapid advances in information technology have transformed news consumption toward online platforms, incentivizing speed and traffic-driven content that often yields sensational headlines (clickbait) and weak verification practices; two JawaPos.com reports serve as case points illustrating how media framing can carry ethical and legal ramifications in the digital news ecosystem. This study aims to examine how framing in two articles on JawaPos.com shapes public narratives and to assess the implications for journalistic ethics and Indonesia’s Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE). A qualitative case study approach was employed, with textual analysis of the selected news items as the primary unit. Data were collected from archived news content, legal documents (UU ITE, Press Council’s Cyber Media Guidelines), and academic literature. Robert N. Entman’s framing model (define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, suggest remedies) guided the analysis, accompanied by source triangulation to ensure validity. Results indicate both reports rely on emotionally charged diction and social-media–sourced opinions without adequate verification; the “suggest remedies” element is largely absent, undermining balance and fact-checking. Such framing practices pose legal risks, potentially implicating Clauses 27A, 28(1), and 45A of the UU ITE, as the publication of unverified identities and allegations may harm personal reputations and propagate misleading information. Online newsrooms must strengthen editorial controls and layered verification procedures, aligning newsroom practices with cyber media guidelines and UU ITE, to preserve journalistic integrity and mitigate legal exposure.
