Spektrum Communication Journal is an academic journal published quarterly every year every March, June, September, and December by Stikosa-AWS in collaboration with ISKI-Jatim, APJIKI, and ASPIKOM. This journal publishes original researches in multi concepts, theories, perspectives, paradigms and methodologies in the communications studies perspective. The focus of this journal is in the communication studies perspective and the scope of the journal are: Journalistics; Public Relations; Broadcasting (TV and Film); Marketing & Tourism Communication; Media and Studies; Gender Studies; Advertising; Every received article should follow the Author guidelines. Any submitted paper will be reviewed by reviewers. The review process employs Double-blind Review that the reviewer does not know the identity of the author, and the author does not know the identity of the reviewers.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the branding strategy used by the Bigetron E-Sport Team via the Instagram platform, with a focus on symbolic aspects of strategy, brand as a friend, nostalgia and event branding. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection through non-participant observation of feed posts and reels from the @bigetronesports account. The theory used in this research refers to branding strategy concepts in the book "Strategic Brand Management". The results obtained from this research are that the Bigetron E-Sport Team has succeeded in implementing an adaptive, idealistic and differentiated branding strategy through the Instagram platform. They utilize symbols such as the color red and silhouette images to build a strong brand identity and attract fans' attention. Apart from that, the Bigetron E-Sport Team also uses Event Branding as part of their branding strategy, by holding offline events to increase brand visibility, attract media attention, and introduce players and sponsors to fans. By selecting these aspects, this research provides a deeper understanding of how the Bigetron E-Sport Team utilizes branding strategies through the Instagram platform to strengthen brand identity, deepen relationships with fans, and increase their presence in the E-Sport industry. It is hoped that this research will provide valuable insight for branding practitioners and E-Sport fans in understanding effective branding strategies in the context of social media.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of the rise of toxic relationships in romantic relationships among teenagers. This results in depression, suicide attempts due to excessive pressure from the perpetrator. Komnas Perempuan's annual records for 2022 contain 3,528 data on cases of violence in romantic relationships. The aim of this research is to explain the motives, experiences and meaning of toxic relationship communication in romantic relationships for teenagers in Garut Regency. The research method used is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Phenomenological theory becomes the scalpel in this research to obtain an explanation for the phenomenon of toxic relationships. Data collection techniques through participant observation, in-depth interviews, literature study and documentation. The data analysis techniques in this research are data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The research results show that the motives for toxic relationships in romantic relationships vary, starting from internal factors such as obsession, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), excessive disclosure and external factors such as the surrounding environment and the presence of an ex-lover in a new relationship. The experiences of toxic relationships that many people experience are verbal and nonverbal violence, mild depression to severe depression, trauma, hampered personal development and loss of confidence in having new relationships with other people. The communication meaning of a toxic relationship is one-way communication, a relationship that hurts each other, does not have good expectations from the romantic relationship that is being carried out and the relationship is dominated by only one party.

Abstract

Capitalism permeates all cultural and ideological contexts of everyone, including those who consciously uphold the principles of socialism. A Chinese company called Fuyao, is a company engaged in the production of car glass on an international scale. In an effort to increase the company's production, Fuyao Glass America is immersed in the hegemony of capitalism in the midst of intercultural communication problems that actually become important issues and must be resolved internally in the factory. The context of capitalist hegemony along with ideological conflicts and intercultural communication is what the documentary American Factory depicts. Using Teun Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis, researcher wanted to look at the text, cognition and context as a whole that took place in the documentary. Researcher found in depth at the text manifested from dialogue, images, scenes and visualizations, the cognition manifested from the actors of filmmaking including the production house that houses its distribution, as well as the context of intercultural communication issues and ideological battles that exist in it. As a result of this study,  the documentary American Factory is a representation of the Chinese version of capitalism presented through policies and doctrines to the workers of Fuyao Glass America company in an effort to increase company productivity and capital investment in the United States.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the influence of utilizing Instagram Stories on personal branding among students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at Mercu Buana University in Jakarta. A quantitative approach with an explanatory survey method was employed in this study. The population consisted of active undergraduate students of the 2016 cohort in the Communication Studies program, with a sample of 171 respondents obtained through proportional stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire using a Likert scale. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and simple linear regression analysis. The results indicate a positive and significant influence of Instagram Stories utilization on students' personal branding, with a regression coefficient of 0.900, a determination coefficient of 66.9%, and a t-value greater than the t-table value (18.334 > 1.65392). These findings confirm that Instagram Stories can potentially be utilized as a means to build effective personal branding for students through the posting of engaging content that reflects their personality and embraced values. However, it is important to note that personal branding is not solely influenced by the use of Instagram Stories but also by other factors such as consistency, audience interaction, and a profound understanding of personal branding strategies.

Abstract

Game journalism is a field of journalism that focuses on the gaming industry and gaming culture. Online gaming journalism is the process of reporting and making news about the online gaming industry and esports content. Mobile Legend is one of the MOBA games available for mobile play. Ten players in two teams typically play these games, following a five-versus-five format. In Mobile Legends, users have the ability to communicate through the virtual world. The process of virtual communication involves conveying messages to others within the virtual environment. This study aims to determine how the virtual communication patterns used by mobile gamers influence the sarcasm of the Asahan district's remains. The results of this study show that mobile Legends gamers in the district are more likely to use the voice chat and manual chat features as a virtual communication tool to convey the circus words or sentences that players use in mobile Legends online games. Then, gamers employ circular communication patterns, which involve a message delivery process that allows both communicators to exchange functions. As is the case with a player who starts commenting on a bad game from another player, that comment is given feedback against the commentator and can be replied to by the team member to give another feedback. This study employs qualitative research methods such as library study, observation and interview techniques, virtual ethnography methods, and documentation as an additional method.

Abstract

A topic that has garnered national attention from 2023 forward is McDonald's contribution of 4,000 meals to the Israeli army. Since the topic was deemed contentious, it was also covered by a number of news outlets. Tribun News.com was among the media outlets that reported the story as well. When it comes to covering McDonald's acts and their effects on society, Tribun News.com is a very informed source. The goal of this research is to learn more about how Muslim students' opinions and behavior are influenced by the media, particularly the news media. Understanding the existing background of cultural and religious variety, as well as how the media influences the dynamics of diversity among Muslim students, is another goal of this research. This research contributes to the understanding of how Muslim students receive and interpret information from the media. These findings can also be used to improve the media's understanding of how to convey information more effectively to Muslim audiences. This study takes a descriptive approach while utilizing a qualitative strategy. Interviews with informants about how Muslim students reacted to news from Tribun news.com yielded data. In-depth interviews with carefully chosen informants and content analysis of Tribun News.com articles regarding the McDonald's boycott were used to gather data. The collected qualitative data were subjected to many analyses in this study: data collecting, data reduction through the summarization and selection of key elements from the interview transcripts, and data presentation by the combination of multiple transcripts from the same interview. The majority of informants are then in a dominant position following the data summary. According to this stance, Muslim students support the boycott as a way to protest McDonald's Israel's acts, and informants are important for comprehending the news that Tribun News.com provides.

Abstract

People with disabilities are still often faced with stigma and negative stereotypes from society, they often experience difficulty communicating with other people. These communication difficulties create obstacles in building strong social relationships, so that communication becomes the most important aspect of interactions for people with disabilities. Communication has an important role as a process of creating relationships in social life, including romantic relationships. The importance of communication in romantic relationships has been the focus of this research which aims at exploring the progression of relationships between deaf-hearing couples based on social penetration theory. This research used a qualitative descriptive method with semi-structured interviews with four deaf-hearing couples. Data validity was guaranteed through source triangulation and analysis using coding. The results will describe the progression of the romantic relationship of deaf-hearing couples based on social penetration theory. This research is useful in providing a clear picture of the progression, dynamics and stages of communication that have taken place in the romantic relationship of deaf-hearing couples. The research results show that there is a progression of relationships in accordance with social penetration theory, starting from the orientation phase, exploratory affective exploration, stable exchange, until finally the deepest phase of stable exchange. This research also obtained results that are in accordance with the depth of information from the social penetration theory that applies to the romantic relationships of deaf-hearing couples, namely public layer, personal layer and inner core.

Abstract

The goal of this research-based, scientific study is to shed light on how Surabaya's campuses and schools are prepared to handle the demands of modern, convergent digital media and learning methodologies. This study focuses on the in-person teaching and learning process that is scheduled to resume in July 2021 and reshaping society three years after the pandemic. Even while face-to-face instruction will introduce new habits for the new era—the new norm era—schools and campuses must nonetheless adhere to government-established health procedures. The education industry has updated its teaching strategies for this new normal period.  Schools and colleges use information and communication technology-based teaching and learning strategies both online and offline to keep up the teaching and learning process. The issue is that, from facilities to human resources (HR), Indonesian campuses and schools are currently not dispersed equally, especially in major cities like Surabaya. This presents a significant obstacle to Indonesia's educational system. In order to characterize the discourse and social changes that take place during the preparation process of learning techniques employing convergent digital media in the city of Surabaya, this study employs a discourse analysis method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The study's findings and recommendations indicate that, in the new normal period, digital communication media is presently a useful and efficient tool for learning. The new normal era's social shifts in the education sector today base its teaching strategies on the convergence of media and digital technologies.

Abstract

Optimizing Food Security Maintenance: Utilizing Natural Resources at the Local Level, Illustrated by the Cireundeu Indigenous Village's Commitment to Local Wisdom in Safeguarding Food Security. As an indigenous community, the Cireundeu people employ specific communication methods to preserve and uphold their food security principles, making them a focal point for ecotourism. This research aims to understand how the Cireundeu indigenous community comprehends and implements the concept of food security. Additionally, it investigates how this concept is communicated to the younger generation to ensure sustainability and serve as an attraction for ecotourism. The research design employs a qualitative approach and ethnographic methods, with data collection techniques including observation and semi-structured interviews. The findings describe four food security concepts within the Cireundeu Indigenous Village and outline four communication strategies employed to sustain these principles and attract ecotourism. In conclusion, the research reveals that through food security concepts and communication traditions, the Cireundeu indigenous community is dedicated to ensuring adequate access to food security for all members and promoting ecotourism appeal.

Abstract

Madura has natural, cultural, religious, and culinary attractions, this adds to the wealth of local wisdom of Madura to attract visitors from outside Madura. Bangkalan Regency itself has a lot of tourism, currently still under development by each village pokdarwis (kelompok sadar wisata) and assisted by the local tourism office, but this is not optimal. Such as tourism development through promotion and optimization has not been maximized. Looking at the background, the researcher wants to know, analyze, and dig deeply: 1) the Optimalization model of the application in Android destination-based traveler local wisdom as media persuasive for tourism global, 2) Why optimization of application in Android destination-based traveler local wisdom as digitalization persuasive for the important tourism global development. The subjects are village tourism managers, village heads, and tourism offices. The objects of the optimization in application android destination-based traveler local wisdom as persuasive digitalization for tourism global. Data collection methods through observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, audio-visual materials, and literature. The case study approach and the validity use data triangulation, methods, and member checks. The results of the research: 1) produced an optimization model of local wisdom-based tourist destination in android applications as persuasive media for global tourists, 2) importance of a tourism android application, to introduce potential Natural Beach Tourism, introduce potential artificial beach tourism, introduce superior religious tourism, introduce superior cultural tourism, introduce superior culinary tourism, increase the creative economy through local wisdom-based tourism, and provide information on village tourism that has the potential to become a leading tourism in Base.
