Abstract

This paper explores how online news outlets in Indonesia have covered the "Peringatan Darurat Garuda Biru" movement. By employing a corpus-assisted discourse analysis (CADS), the study examines how language and media framing subtly direct blame toward the DPR and the Jokowi administration for the perceived democratic backsliding and manipulations of election laws. A total of 68 news articles from two major online media, Detik.com and CNNIndonesia.com, published between August 21-22, 2024, were analyzed. Detik.com was selected due to its highest media reach in Indonesia, while CNN Indonesia was chosen for its high level of public trust. The data processing was conducted using Voyant Tools, focusing on frequency, concordance, and collocation analyses. The research reveals that terms such as "manuver DPR" and "RUU Pilkada" are frequently used in association with political manipulation, while "Jokowi" appears as a central figure, reflecting broader concerns over governance and democracy. The analysis shows how online discourse implicitly assigns accountability, shaping public opinion without explicit accusations. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that online news outlets in Indonesia do not report the Peringatan Darurat issue in a neutral manner but have a pro-democracy stance.

Abstract

The empty box phenomenon in the 2024 simultaneous regional elections is a representation of public dissatisfaction with the quality of candidates and political processes that characterize the local area. This study aims to explore the subjective experiences of voters who will vote for an empty box and the meaning behind their choice. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to find out the perceptions, motivations, and expectations of voters in areas with a single candidate. Interviews were conducted online with eleven (11) participants selected by purposive sampling with varied age, education, and economic backgrounds using Google Form application with ten (10) structured questions. The results of the study explain the main themes that emerged from the results of thematic analysis include distrust in the quality of candidates, blank votes as a form of protest against the political system, hope for fairer and more transparent elections, and finally social influence in making choices. The findings therefore suggest that this was a kind of protest, not only against one of the candidates, but also an expression of dissatisfaction with the dominance of the local ruling elite. Voters hope that this phenomenon can encourage changes to a more representative electoral system in the future.

Abstract

This study analyzes the framing of news about the McDonald's boycott in Indonesia published by two online media, Kompas.com and Kumparan.com. Using the framing analysis method, this study aims to understand how the two media outlets structure narratives related to the boycott triggered by McDonald's support for the conflicts that occur in Israel and Palestine. In this analysis, the author uses Robert Entman's framing model which includes four main elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and suggest remedies. The results of the analysis show that Kompas.com tend to emphasize the economic and social aspects of the boycott, with an emphasis on market stability and consumer perspectives in Indonesia. On the other hand, Kumparan.com highlighted the political aspects and solidarity movements, by presenting the background of the conflict that triggered the boycott and opinions from various community groups. This difference in framing reflects the editorial approach of each media in shaping public opinion regarding the issue of the McDonald's boycott in Indonesia. This study contributes to an understanding of how media framing can affect public perception of controversial issues in economic, social, and political contexts.

Abstract

The traditional representation of women in beauty products has often focused on their attention-grabbing appearance, while men have typically been associated with a simpler, more masculine look. However, this discourse is evolving as more beauty brands use male brand ambassadors. This shift is due to the growing acceptance of men using beauty products, despite some resistance rooted in societal stereotypes. This study aims to analyze how male brand ambassadors challenge traditional gender norms, particularly regarding masculinity and femininity. Using discourse analysis, the research examines advertisements featuring male brand ambassadors and explores how they simultaneously project both masculinity and femininity. The results show that these advertisements reflect a changing perception of gender roles, where men are portrayed as not only masculine but also in touch with femininity, blurring the boundaries between the two. This research contributes to the understanding of how beauty marketing reflects and influences evolving gender identities and the shifting cultural landscape of beauty standards.
