Abstract

English is a global language that dominates various aspects of life, including science, information technology, education, politics, economics, and culture. However, many students in Indonesia, from elementary school to college, struggle with English proficiency despite years of study. This issue stems from a lack of practical application in learning English, where the language is often treated as a theoretical subject rather than a practical skill. This study aims to identify solutions to these challenges in English language learning through a literature review of relevant sources, including e-journals, e-books, articles, and academic journals. The findings suggest that effective English learning should emphasize practice and active engagement, particularly through trial and error, to help students build confidence and improve their skills. Key solutions include encouraging students to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing regularly, and integrating English into daily activities, such as listening to English songs or reading English books. Confidence-building is identified as crucial for improving English language skills.

Abstract

This qualitative ethnographic study investigates the value of character education for children at elementary school in the context of English Language Teaching and how it affects their emotional growth. The research aims to evaluate several key student behaviour and character indicators, including values, morality, attitudes, interests, and self-concept. Data was collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and questionnaire analysis. The results show that students' variances in these indicators provide insight into the range of affective development that occurs in the setting of schooling. The results revealed that most students demonstrated good attitudes, interests, and values, with most rated 'Excellent' or 'Good' in these indicators. However, self-concept showed more significant variation, with several students rated 'Fair'. Moral indicators also show positive results, with most students rated 'Excellent' or 'Good'. This study offers insightful information about students' conduct and personality in learning environments. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve self-concept and suggest that fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment is crucial for overall character development. These insights can serve as a basis for creating more effective educational programs and improving student performance in learning environments.

Abstract

In the age of globalization, having a working knowledge of English can be beneficial for santriwati. These students may get the chance to study or preach overseas as they pursue their studies of religious knowledge and impart it to others. However, according to a survey done at Hafshawaty Islamic Boarding School, santriwati's level of English proficiency is still quite poor. A pre-experimental investigation was carried out with 16 santriwati of 90 population total in order to address this using a one-group pre-post-test design. Primary data were gathered through interviews, and English-speaking competencies were assessed both before and after speech treatment. To obtain a summary of all the variables, univariate analysis employing a frequency distribution is used, t-test and paired t-test bivariate analysis to ascertain the impact of one variable on another. The improvement of pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary mastery indicates that practicing speech can improve one's ability to speak English.

Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through interviews with teachers, students, and school administrators, as well as classroom observations and document analysis. Key findings indicate that significant challenges include limited access to technology, a lack of technical skills among teachers, and concerns about privacy and data security. However, technology also offers significant opportunities, such as increased student motivation, more adaptive learning, and broader access to educational resources. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive strategies to address these challenges, including better teacher training and the development of technological infrastructure. This study provides valuable insights for designing policies and practices that support the effective integration of technology in EFL teaching, with the hope of improving the quality of education in the digital era.

Abstract

This research focuses on the role of code-switching in bilingual education, examining the cognitive and social implications of the practice. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research analyzes how code-switching affects students' comprehension and social interaction in the bilingual classroom. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis in several bilingual schools. The results show that code-switching plays an important role in helping students understand complex material and in strengthening their social identity. Cognitively, code-switching allows students to utilize their first language to understand difficult concepts, while socially, the practice reinforces inclusivity and positive dynamics in the classroom. The implications of the findings confirm that code-switching is an effective pedagogical strategy and not simply a communication tool. The recommendations of this study encourage educators and policy makers to integrate code-switching as an integral part of teaching strategies in bilingual education, to support more inclusive and effective learning.

Abstract

English language learning in Indonesian schools is a crucial element in preparing students to face globalization and competition in the job market. This study explores the impact of English language learning on cognitive development, educational opportunities, and career prospects. Using a library research method, various literatures from SINTA, WoS and Scopus indexed journals were analyzed to identify the benefits and challenges associated with English language teaching. Findings indicate that English proficiency enhances critical thinking skills, analytical abilities, and provides a competitive edge in the global job market. Despite policies such as the 2013 Curriculum improving English competencies, there are still disparities in teaching quality and resources. Challenges include limited access in rural areas and the need for more interactive pedagogical approaches. This study emphasizes the importance of sustained support from government, schools, and communities, as well as the utilization of educational technology to overcome these barriers. The conclusion of this study is that by improving English proficiency among students, Indonesia can enhance its global competitiveness and better prepare its youth for the era of globalization.

Abstract

This study explores the role of student assistants in enhancing interactive English learning at MA Bahrul Ulum, an Islamic senior high school operating within a pesantren-based educational system. Positioned as part of a collaborative teaching strategy, student assistants serve not only as academic support but also as facilitators who promote learner engagement through a variety of interactive approaches. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with English teachers and teaching assistants, as well as student reflections. The findings indicate that student assistants contribute meaningfully to building a more dynamic and student-centered classroom. They incorporate strategies such as language games, group discussions, role-plays, and the use of digital tools to make lessons more engaging. These methods were found to lower students’ anxiety when speaking English and increase overall classroom participation. Despite challenges such as limited experience and time management difficulties, assistants were able to bridge the gap between formal instruction and informal, communicative language practice. Their presence also made learning more relatable, especially through peer-to-peer interaction. Furthermore, their efforts aligned with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum, which encourages contextualized, independent, and meaningful learning. In the pesantren setting, student assistants successfully integrated Islamic values into language activities, making English instruction more culturally relevant. The study concludes that, with proper training and structured implementation, student assistantship programs have the potential to significantly improve English language education in Islamic-based schools by enhancing motivation, fostering communication, and creating supportive learning environments.
