Abstract

This research aims to describe the social reality and social construction process in the novel Kerumunan Terakhir by Okky Madasari using Berger and Luckmann's social construction theory. This type of research is qualitative descriptive by analyzing social reality. The source of research data is the novel The Last Crowd by Okky Madasari in 2016.  The data collection techniques used are reading, recording, and documentation techniques. The results of the study explain that social inequality in the novel The Last Crowd, namely in the form of inequality in education, employment, and kinship conflicts is a social reality that depicts injustice in the social system. The inequality that occurred eventually caused various kinds of conflicts in the characters. The results of social construction research are divided into three. First, the process of externalization, the social inequality in this novel was initially formed through repeated actions carried out by the characters as individuals in a community group. Second, the process of objectification, after these actions become habits, the characters begin to see actions or behaviors as natural or as if they are right and cannot be changed, so they are considered objective reality. Third, the process of internalization, at this stage figures as individuals in society begin to accept this social inequality as part of their identity and environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of forms of sexism against women in Lucia Priandarini’s Penyalin Cahaya novel through the perspective of Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The phenomenon of sexual violence, which is rooted in sexism within Sara Mills' framework, is a crucial issue that needs to be critically examined through discourse analysis in literary works. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using the literature study technique, where data consisting of textual quotations and narration from the novel are analyzed using Sara Mills' CDA. The findings reveal that sexism against women is divided into two primary forms. First, physical sexism (or overt sexism) is manifested through the objectification of women’s bodies, pornography, and sexual harassment, functioning as a tool to assert male dominance and control over women’s bodies. Second, verbal sexism (or indirect sexism) is found in the forms of sexist labeling, gender stereotypes in language, and sexist jokes. Overall, the findings conclude that sexism in the Penyalin Cahaya novel operates as a discursive mechanism that effectively maintains and reinforces the patriarchal power structure, with language and action being used as instruments of control that demean and restrict women's roles. This analysis can serve as a reference for enhancing critical awareness regarding sexist discourse in contemporary literary texts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolic meaning and cultural values contained in Paruntuk Kana in the life of the Jeneponto community from the perspective of Roland Barthes' semiotics. The method used is descriptive qualitative research, with primary data sourced from the classic literary document Pasang dan Paruntuk Kana by Zainuddin Hakim and verified through interviews and field observation. The findings indicate that Paruntuk Kana functions as a functional symbolic sign system. Semiotically, the expressions operate through two layers: denotative, as the concrete, literal meaning, and connotative, as the layer where cultural values are embedded, serving as social control. The cultural values found within Paruntuk Kana collectively form an essential communal ethical guide, including: the value of honesty (lambusuk) which is the principal capital for integrity; the value of leadership which condemns opportunistic behavior and demands responsibility; the value of unity which emphasizes cohesion based on truth and justice; and the value of sirik (shame/dignity) which is the highest sense of honor and acts as the strongest mechanism for social control. This research contributes to understanding Paruntuk Kana's role as an essential cultural identity in maintaining the ethical behavior and social stability of the Jeneponto community.

Abstract

This study explores the manifestation of divine values in Jalaluddin Rumi’s Masnavi through the lens of the philosophy of language. As a monumental work of Sufi literature, the Masnavi employs symbolic, metaphoric, and dialogic forms of expression that reveal the mystical relationship between language and the experience of the Divine. Using a qualitative interpretive approach, this research analyzes selected verses to uncover how linguistic structures, especially metaphors and narrative parables, function as mediums for conveying spiritual truths. The findings show that Rumi’s language does not merely describe divinity but performs a transformative function—inviting readers to transcend literal meanings and engage in inner reflection (ta’ammul) and spiritual realization (ma’rifa). Divine values such as love, unity, compassion, and surrender are linguistically articulated in multilayered expressions, highlighting the inseparability of form and meaning in mystical discourse. This study affirms that, within Rumi’s Masnavi, language serves as both a philosophical and spiritual bridge that guides readers toward a deeper understanding of divine reality.

Abstract

This study aims to describe social media users' understanding of Indonesian language rules through quiz-based coaching on Instagram. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design, utilizing the Instagram Story polling feature on the @binakatakita account to collect data on standard and non-standard words. Fifteen quizzes were used to assess respondents' preferences. Data were obtained through documentation of poll results, non-participatory observation, and linguistic verification using the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) and the Indonesian Dictionary (EYD). The results showed that respondents' understanding of standard forms was inconsistent, evident in their choice of non-standard forms for words such as advice, damp, mere, and cooperation. Errors were generally influenced by spoken language habits and the use of informal language on social media. However, coaching through Instagram has been shown to positively contribute to Indonesian language popularization efforts. This study concludes that Instagram can be an adaptive, accessible, and relevant language coaching medium for the digital generation, and has the potential to improve language literacy if implemented sustainably.

Data analysis was carried out through the stages of identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that in this novel there are two forms of social conflict, namely realistic conflict and non-realistic conflict. Realistic conflict arises due to concrete social needs and demands such as livelihood, justice, equality, and environmental sustainability directed at those in power, officials, and mining companies as the source of the problem. Meanwhile, non-realistic conflict arises as a form of emotional venting, such as anger, disappointment, or frustration, which has no clear purpose and is often directed at parties who are made scapegoats. Overall, these two forms of conflict describe the social reality of a society fraught with tension and the struggle against injustice
