Abstract

This study examines the issue of identity confusion among the people of Bengkulu, which is characterized by a heterogeneous population. The research is based on field phenomena where many migrants and their descendants still experience uncertainty in expressing their cultural identity. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach focused on the community of Bengkulu City. These findings are analyzed using Michael Hecht’s Communication Theory of Identity (CTI), which conceptualizes identity as something that is formed, negotiated, and maintained through communication across four interpenetrative layers. The research informants consist of community leaders and academics who meet the established criteria. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The results were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman approach and validated through source triangulation. The findings reveal that identity confusion is particularly evident among the younger generation whose parents are not originally from Bengkulu City. One way individuals attempt to construct their identity is by aligning themselves with one of the available "stocks of identity" in Bengkulu. These include: first, identifying as Orang Bengkulu (People of Bengkulu) and second, as Orang Melayu Bengkulu (Ethnic Malay of Bengkulu). .

Abstract

In the context of the escalating threat of global radicalism, the regulation of religious discourse has emerged as a pivotal concern for Muslim-majority nations. The present article endeavors to undertake a comparative analysis of Islamic preacher certification policies in Indonesia and Malaysia. The present study aims to elucidate the fundamental discrepancies in objectives, mechanisms, and implementing authorities. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted using a literature review. A comprehensive data set was meticulously gathered from both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources encompassed government policies, fatwas, and regulations, while the secondary sources included journals, books, and think tank reports. These data were then subjected to a rigorous thematic analysis and comparative scrutiny through a comparative matrix. The findings indicate that Islamic preacher certification in Indonesia is driven by a national security agenda to counter radicalism and represents a compromise between the state and civil society organizations. In contrast, Malaysia's mandatory tauliah (Islamic preacher certification) system prioritizes the preservation of doctrinal orthodoxy and is legally enforced by religious authorities at the state level. These disparate models reflect the distinct political landscapes and state-religion relations in both countries. Implications are both models encounter substantial challenges in regulating digital da'wah that is not bound by jurisdiction, underscoring the need for further research on religious governance in the digital age. Future studies should explore the impact of preacher certification on radicalism prevention

Abstract

This study examines the comparative perspectives of René Descartes and Harun Nasution on the role of reason (ratio) in the pursuit of truth. Using a library research approach with qualitative descriptive analysis, this study investigates how Descartes elevates reason as the primary source of knowledge through his rationalist philosophy, Harun Nasution underscores the integration of reason and revelation within Islamic intellectual tradition. In contrast, the study highlights that Descartes, through the notion of cogito ergo sum (“I think, therefore I am”), regards reason as the ultimate foundation of certainty, independent of sensory perception or divine revelation. In contrast, Harun Nasution emphasizes that reason holds a high position in Islam but must be aligned with revelation, especially in understanding theology and religious practice. This comparative analysis highlights the importance of reason in both Western rationalism and modernist Islamic thought, while also illustrating their distinct epistemological approaches. This study contributes to contemporary debates on the role of rationality in religion and philosophy, particularly in the context of Islamic education and modern philosophy.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the Instagram account @pplkpm_internasional_2025 in shaping public perception and the image of STAIN Teungku Dirundeng Meulaboh as an internationally-oriented Islamic university. This study is important because there has been no specific study that places students as non-professional communication actors in the management of social media for international programs in the PTKIN environment. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with digital observation techniques on 111 posts as the main unit of analysis during the period of January–October 2025, and in-depth interviews with seven informants consisting of account managers and followers as the main data sources. The results show that the consistency of posts, the use of international logos and slogans, and the dominance of educational and documentary content shape the public's perception that the account represents the institution's official program. Audience interactions, such as likes and comments, serve as social validation that reinforces the program's positive image. The main findings of this study indicate that interdisciplinary students, as non-professional communication actors, can effectively build the institution's image on social media without the direct involvement of the campus public relations unit. These findings expand the theoretical understanding of the formation of higher education institutions' images based on participatory digital communication. In practical terms, the results of this study imply that universities need to formulate guidelines for managing social media for international programs that strategically involve students. Abstract

This study examines the implementation and effectiveness of communication policy by the Criminal Investigation Unit (Sat Reskrim) of the Central Tapanuli Police in preventing corruption. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving police officers, government officials, and community members. The study is supported by communication theory, particularly Negative Dominance Theory, to analyze how messages are constructed and influence public perception and behavior. The findings indicate that the communication policy is implemented through preventive, educative, and coordinative strategies, emphasizing persuasive, educative, and informative communication approaches. These strategies are delivered through direct interactions such as socialization, legal counseling, and community discussions, as well as through digital platforms like social media. The use of negative messages highlighting legal consequences, combined with positive messages promoting transparency and integrity, effectively increases public awareness and discourages corrupt behavior. Moreover, communication is carried out in a humanistic and participatory manner, fostering trust, openness, and collaboration between the police and the community. The effectiveness of this policy is supported by several factors, including leadership commitment, strong team coordination, adequate communication facilities, inter-agency collaboration, and increasing community participation. However, challenges such as limited infrastructure, varying levels of public awareness, and bureaucratic constraints still affect implementation. In conclusion, the communication policy of Sat Reskrim Polres Tapanuli Tengah significantly contributes to corruption prevention by strengthening public awareness, participation, and accountability. The integration of strategic communication and community engagement supports the development of a sustainable anti-corruption culture and enhances transparent and accountable governance.

Abstract

This research analyzes the implementation of Islamic communication semiotics in the film "Ajarkan Aku Aceh" as a medium for promoting sharia-based tourism. Using a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, the research examines the construction of denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the visual representation of Aceh's tourism. The results show that the film successfully integrated Islamic values with destination promotion strategies by transforming visual elements into symbols of spirituality and community hospitality. The construction of the "Serambi Mekkah" mythology creates a unique selling proposition that distinguishes Aceh from other destinations. The film constructs a holistic tourism paradigm that emphasizes educational, spiritual, and cultural dimensions, creating sacred geography and emotional connections with the audience. The findings reveal the potential of film as an effective contextual preaching instrument in the digital era, contributing theoretically to the development of an Islamic communication model for tourism marketing based on religious values.

Abstract

This study examines the peaceful communication practiced by the Aceh Party (PA) in integrating local wisdom grounded in religious values. Beyond its political role, PA acts as a mediator in promoting peace, reconciliation, social cohesion, and democratic consolidation in Aceh. The research focuses on PA’s communication strategies, both direct and media-mediated, in the eastern coastal region of Aceh. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach with a constructivist-interpretive phenomenological paradigm, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus group discussions, and literature review. The study draws on the Qur’an and Hadith as meta-theoretical foundations, supported by theories on peaceful communication, conflict transformation, human communication, deliberative democracy, local wisdom, and social cohesion. Findings reveal that PA develops a narrative of peaceful communication rooted in traditions such as peumulia jamee, musyawarah Mukim, meuseraya, peusijuek, and peumat jaroe, reflecting dialogical, inclusive, responsive, and adaptive practices based on akhlak al-karimah, ukhuwah, amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, and rahmatan lil ‘alamin. Local wisdom functions both as a conflict-resolution mechanism and a collective educational medium. Challenges such as pragmatism, symbolism, exclusivism, and patronage may distance PA from Islamic-based local wisdom. The study proposes an integrative model of peace communication, offering insights for sustainable, inclusive peace and political stability.
