Abstract

Water quality is a critical factor influencing the growth and productivity of seaweed cultivation. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between water quality characteristics and the productivity of Kappaphycus alvarezii cultivated using the long-line method in West Sebatik District, Nunukan Regency. The study was conducted from September to December 2025 in three villages, namely Setabu, Binalawan, and Liang Bunyu, using a quantitative approach with an observational and descriptive-analytical design. Water quality parameters measured included temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, transparency, current velocity, depth, nitrate, and phosphate. Productivity was evaluated based on growth performance and annual production. The results indicated that all water quality parameters were generally within suitable ranges for seaweed cultivation. Binalawan exhibited the highest transparency (1.50 ± 0.15 m) and phosphate concentration (0.30 ± 0.06 mg L⁻¹), resulting in the highest biomass (388 g) and specific growth rate (4.182% day⁻¹). Liang Bunyu recorded the highest annual dry production (6,435 tons year⁻¹) due to its larger cultivation area. The findings highlight the importance of water quality management and site selection in improving the productivity and sustainability of K. alvarezii cultivation

Abstract

Feed quality and mineral availability play important roles in determining the growth and survival of freshwater lobster (Cherax quadricarinatus). This study aimed to analyze the effects of natural feed supplemented with calcium carbonate on the growth and survival performance of freshwater lobster. The experiment was conducted from March to April 2025 at the Freshwater Hatchery of Pangkep State Polytechnic of Agriculture using a completely randomized design with three treatments and three replications. The treatments consisted of commercial shrimp pellets (control), Tubifex sp. supplemented with 10% CaCO₃, and earthworms supplemented with 10% CaCO₃. Lobsters were reared for 42 days and fed daily at 3% of biomass. Absolute growth and survival rate were used as response variables, and the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s HSD test. The results showed that dietary treatments significantly affected both growth and survival (p < 0.05). The highest absolute growth (0.29 ± 0.005 g) and survival rate (88.89 ± 5.55%) were obtained in lobsters fed Tubifex sp. supplemented with 10% CaCO₃, whereas the control treatment produced the lowest values. Water quality parameters remained within acceptable ranges for freshwater lobster culture throughout the study. These findings indicate that the combination of natural feed and calcium carbonate supplementation can enhance growth performance and improve survival in freshwater lobster culture.

Abstract

Kecap ikan teri merupakan produk fermentasi yang kaya protein sehingga berpotensi menghasilkan kandungan asam amino yang tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan enzim papain terhadap total asam amino serta mutu organoleptik kecap ikan teri dan membandingkannya dengan kecap tanpa enzim. Metode penelitian menggunakan dua perlakuan, yaitu A (0g enzim papain) sebagai kontrol dan B (10g enzim papain). Analisis komposisi asam amino dilakukan menggunakan kromatografi cair kinerja tinggi (HPLC), sedangkan evaluasi organoleptik dilakukan melalui uji hedonik. Data diolah dengan uji non-parametrik menggunakan Mann-Whitney U. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa total asam amino sampel A adalah 19.49% w/w, sedangkan sampel B adalah 11.54% w/w, yang menunjukkan rendahnya kadar asam amino akibat penambahan enzim papain. Hasil uji organoleptik menunjukkan bahwa penambahan enzim papain menurunkan nilai rasa pada sampel B 2.6 (cukup suka) dan nilai warna pada sampel B 3.1 (cukup suka), sedangkan sampel tanpa penambahan enzim papain meningkatkan nilai rasa pada sampel A 2.7 (cukup suka) dan nilai warna pada sampel A 3.3 (cukup suka), sedangkan sampel tanpa penambahan enzim papain menunjukkan penurunan nilai bau pada sampel A 2.5 (kurang suka) dan nilai tekstur pada sampel A 2.8 (cukup suka), sedangkan pada sampel dengan penambahan enzim papain menunjukkan peningkatan nilai bau pada sampel B 2.6 (cukup suka) dan nilai tekstur pada sampel B 3.0 (cukup suka). Hasil uji Mann-Whitney U menunjukkan bahwa penambahan enzim papain berpengaruh negatif terhadap asam amino dan nilai organoleptic rasa dan warna kecap ikan teri.

Abstract

Coral transplantation has become one of the most widely applied approaches for accelerating reef recovery in degraded marine ecosystems. This study aimed to compare the growth rate and survival of Acropora cervicornis and Echinopora horrida transplanted using Turtle, Table, and Spyder models on Barrang Caddi Island, South Sulawesi. The experiment was conducted for eight weeks at depths of 7–10 m using 60 coral fragments equally distributed among three transplantation models. Growth rate was measured based on linear extension, while survival rate and oceanographic parameters were also monitored. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Welch's independent t-test. The results showed that A. cervicornis exhibited higher growth rates than E. horrida across all transplantation models. The Turtle model produced the highest growth of A. cervicornis (2.39 mm), whereas the Table model yielded the greatest growth of E. horrida (1.77 mm). Survival rates reached 90% for A. cervicornis and 100% for E. horrida. One-way ANOVA indicated significant differences among transplantation models for both species (p < 0.05). Oceanographic conditions remained within optimal ranges throughout the study. These findings demonstrate that transplantation model configuration significantly influences coral growth and that species-specific restoration strategies are essential for improving coral rehabilitation success.

Abstract

The increasing accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic waste has encouraged the development of environmentally friendly alternatives derived from renewable natural resources. One promising material is cellulose extracted from the red seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii, which possesses favorable characteristics for bioplastic production. This study aimed to evaluate the degradability of azo dyes and microbial activity in bioplastics produced from K. alvarezii cellulose with different cellulose-to-cassava starch ratios. The research was conducted from July to October 2025 using five formulations: F1 (5:5), F2 (8:2), F3 (2:8), F4 (0:10), and F5 (10:0). Cellulose extraction was performed through alkaline and acid hydrolysis methods, while bioplastic films were produced through solution casting with glycerol as a plasticizer. Azo dye degradation was analyzed using UV–Visible spectrophotometry, whereas microbial activity was evaluated through Total Plate Count (TPC) analysis. The UV–Vis results revealed no characteristic absorption peaks of azo dyes in the 300–500 nm wavelength range, indicating the absence or successful degradation of azo chromophores in all formulations. Cellulose-rich formulations exhibited higher optical transparency and greater film homogeneity than starch-dominated formulations. TPC values ranged from 0 to 420 CFU g⁻¹ and remained substantially below the maximum limit established by SNI 7388:2009 (4,400 CFU g⁻¹), confirming excellent microbiological quality and product safety. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal–Wallis test showed no significant differences among formulations (p > 0.05). The combined findings demonstrate that cellulose-based bioplastics derived from Kappaphycus alvarezii possess good biodegradation potential, are free from detectable azo dye contamination, and maintain low microbial contamination levels. Therefore, these bioplastics have strong potential as sustainable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics for food packaging, cosmetic packaging, and other environmentally sensitive applications

Abstract

The fish processing industry plays an important role in increasing the added value of fisheries products and strengthening the economic resilience of coastal communities. This study aimed to evaluate the financial feasibility of the fish floss business operated by Kembang Dahlia SME in Buki District, Selayar Islands Regency. The research was conducted from May to July 2025 using a case study approach. Primary data were collected through observations, interviews, documentation, and structured questionnaires, while secondary data were obtained from institutional reports and relevant literature. Financial feasibility was analyzed using investment cost analysis, production cost analysis, Break-Even Point (BEP), Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The results showed that the enterprise required an initial investment of IDR 25,170,000 and maintained annual production costs ranging from IDR 43.13 million to IDR 47.60 million during 2022–2024. Annual revenues ranged from IDR 109.50 million to IDR 136.05 million, generating net profits between IDR 66.37 million and IDR 88.45 million. The business consistently produced above the break-even production level, while the selling price remained substantially higher than the break-even price. Financial feasibility indicators demonstrated positive results, including an NPV of IDR 53,648,180, a BCR of 1.35, and an IRR of 123%, all exceeding the accepted investment criteria. These findings indicate that the fish floss business operated by Kembang Dahlia SME is financially feasible, profitable, and sustainable. Strengthening production capacity, improving product diversification, and expanding market access are recommended to enhance long-term business competitiveness and profitability

Abstract

Seaweed plays an essential ecological role in coastal ecosystems by providing habitat, primary productivity, and supporting marine biodiversity. Despite its ecological and economic importance, information regarding the community structure and density of seaweed in Barrang Caddi Island, Makassar City, remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the community structure, species density, and environmental conditions influencing seaweed distribution in the coastal waters of Barrang Caddi Island. The research was conducted from April to May 2025 at three sampling stations using a quantitative descriptive approach. Seaweed data were collected using the line transect–quadrat method (1 × 1 m quadrats along 50 m transects), while water quality parameters, including temperature, salinity, and pH, were measured in situ. Community structure was evaluated using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H'), Pielou's evenness index (E), Simpson's dominance index (C), and species density (individuals m⁻²). The results showed that the seaweed community exhibited moderate diversity (H' = 1.2456–1.2932), high evenness (E = 0.8985–0.9328), and moderate dominance (C = 0.2896–0.3156), indicating a relatively stable community structure. Species density varied among stations, with Caulerpa sp. (3.2 ind. m⁻²), Sargassum sp. (1.12 ind. m⁻²), and Turbinaria ornata (1.4 ind. m⁻²) representing the dominant species at Stations 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Water quality remained within suitable ranges for tropical seaweed growth, with temperatures of 27–29°C, salinity of 29–30 ppt, and pH of 8.07–8.46. These findings indicate that the coastal ecosystem of Barrang Caddi Island continues to support diverse and relatively stable seaweed communities. The study provides baseline ecological information that can support sustainable coastal management, biodiversity conservation, and future monitoring of macroalgal resources in the Spermonde Archipelago.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify potential fishing grounds for the blue octopus (Octopus cyanea) around Barrang Caddi Island, Makassar City, by integrating field observations with remote sensing-based oceanographic parameters. A quantitative descriptive survey was employed by accompanying local fishermen during 21 fishing trips using handline (handline hook) gear. Geographic coordinates of fishing locations were recorded using a Global Positioning System (GPS), while satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST), salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentration were obtained from Aqua MODIS and HYCOM datasets. Spatial analysis was performed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to delineate potential fishing zones based on the integration of catch distribution and environmental variables. The results revealed that potential fishing grounds were predominantly located in shallow coral reef habitats surrounding Barrang Lompo and Barrang Caddi Islands. Sea surface temperature averaged 29.24°C, salinity reached 30.8 PSU, and chlorophyll-a concentration ranged from 0.6 to 0.8 mg m⁻³, indicating environmentally favorable conditions for Octopus cyanea. Moderate-potential fishing zones occupied the largest spatial extent, whereas high-potential areas were concentrated near structurally complex coral reef ecosystems. These findings demonstrate that remote sensing provides an effective approach for identifying productive octopus fishing grounds and can support sustainable fisheries management, improve fishing efficiency, and provide scientific information for spatial planning and resource conservation in the Spermonde Archipelago.

Abstract

Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) has emerged as an environmentally sustainable aquaculture approach by integrating organisms from different trophic levels to improve nutrient recycling efficiency. This study evaluated the effectiveness of various IMTA species combinations in reducing Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN), Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN), and Dissolved Inorganic Phosphate (DIP) within marine culture systems. A completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications was employed, comprising P1 (Lates calcarifer), P2 (Lates calcarifer + Perna viridis), P3 (Lates calcarifer + Caulerpa lentillifera), and P4 (Lates calcarifer + Perna viridis + Caulerpa lentillifera). Water samples were collected every 15 days over a 45-day culture period and analyzed using UV–Visible spectrophotometry. Nutrient reduction efficiency was calculated for each treatment, while one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test was applied to determine significant differences among treatments. The results demonstrated that integrated culture systems consistently reduced nutrient accumulation more effectively than monoculture. The complete IMTA treatment (P4) exhibited the greatest capacity to regulate TAN, DIN, and DIP concentrations through complementary nutrient uptake by macroalgae and filtration by bivalves. ANOVA confirmed significant treatment effects on TAN (F = 6.24, p = 0.021), DIN (F = 5.87, p = 0.016), and DIP (F = 5.21, p = 0.021). These findings demonstrate that integrating Lates calcarifer, Perna viridis, and Caulerpa lentillifera substantially enhances nutrient recycling efficiency, improves water quality, and provides an ecologically sustainable strategy for tropical marine aquaculture.

Abstract

The stones octopus (Octopus cyanea) fishery is a prime export commodity for Indonesia; however, high exploitation pressure in the absence of stringent regulations on Barrang Caddi Island threatens the sustainability of its wild stocks. This study aims to analyze the morphometric characteristics of O. cyanea landed on Barrang Caddi Island. Specimens were collected from the catches of traditional fishers from December 2025 to January 2026 across eight sampling sessions. Body length dimensions were measured using a measuring tape with an accuracy of 0.1 cm across four primary parameters: total length, mantle length, mantle width, and arm length. Data were evaluated through a comparative statistical approach using an Independent Samples t-test (α = 0.05) to analyze morphometric variations between sexes. The results indicated that the morphometric characteristics of the stone octopus are generally monomorphic (p > 0.05), with a total length range of 59.6–62.6 cm and a mantle length range of 10.4–10.5 cm. Significant variations between sexes were exclusively identified in arm length (p < 0.05), where females exhibited longer arms (53.0±9.3 cm) as a functional adaptation for egg protection (brooding behavior). The catch was dominated by the 10 cm mantle size class, which is heavily influenced by gear selectivity (pocong-pocong and bole-bole), the West Monsoon season, and high fishing pressure driven by the island’s geographical proximity to the mainland. This truncated size structure indicates an early warning of growth overfishing. Therefore, these morphometric data are highly critical as a scientific baseline to design site-specific fisheries management frameworks, such as establishing minimum legal size limits, in the Spermonde Archipelago
