Abstract

Hemoglobin and hematocrit examinations serve as important early indicators of hematological status, reflecting the blood’s capacity to transport oxygen. A decrease in these two parameters leads to anemia, which is often undetected due to minimal early symptoms and low awareness to undergo examinations. This activity was carried out using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, by examining hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in adult participants. Capillary blood samples were analyzed using a portable device at the examination location. Education was delivered through leaflets regarding the importance of iron, vitamin B12, and folate intake to support erythrocyte formation. The examination was attended by 104 participants, the majority of whom were women. The average hemoglobin was recorded as approaching the lower limit of normal values, while hematocrit levels showed wide variations. More than half of the participants were classified as having anemia. This high proportion of anemia highlights the urgent need for targeted nutritional education. Hemoglobin and hematocrit screening proves effective as an early detection tool for hematological disorders. Education that is linked to laboratory findings should be prioritized to promote improved dietary patterns, particularly the consumption of iron-rich foods, vitamin B12, and folate, in order to prevent erythropoietic dysfunction and long-term health complications.

Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia is a metabolic condition that often occurs in the elderly and contributes greatly to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart attack, and acute pancreatitis. This condition often does not show symptoms in the early stages, so regular triglyceride level checks are an important step for early detection. The Community Service Program (PKM) at Panti Werdha Hana aims to increase awareness of the elderly about the importance of early detection of dyslipidemia through blood triglyceride level screening activities. This activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach which includes lipid profile examination and educational counseling on risk factors and prevention of hypertriglyceridemia. Of the 76 elderly participants, it was found that 33 people (43.42%) had high triglyceride levels, while 43 people (56.58%) showed normal levels. These results emphasize the importance of routine checks and education to reduce the risk of cardiometabolic disease and support a healthier and more independent quality of life for the elderly.

Abstract

The elderly group (elderly), aged 60-69 years, is part of the community that is vulnerable to various health problems, both physically, mentally, and socially. Untreated health problems can reduce the quality of life and become a burden for individuals and society. In Borisallo Village, Parangloe District, Gowa Regency, there are around 320 elderly residents. Through the Community Service (PKM) program of the Fostered Village in collaboration with the Borisallo Village Government and funded by the UMI Endowment Foundation, a series of activities were carried out to improve the quality of personal health of the elderly. The activity was carried out in November 2024 at the Borisallo Village Hall and included two main forms, namely: (1) elderly health checks covering blood glucose, cholesterol, uric acid, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight; and (2) counseling on the importance of maintaining overall health quality. Although only 15 participants registered for the counseling, the number of participants who attended exceeded expectations, indicating high enthusiasm from the community. The results of the examination showed that some elderly people required medical follow-up for further treatment. The program also emphasizes the importance of regular and continuous monitoring of the health of the elderly so that their condition can be monitored objectively and early intervention can be carried out. The activity took place in an atmosphere full of empathy, care, and a spirit of service that respects and loves the elderly.

Abstract

Tartar is a common oral health problem among adolescents. Tartar forms from hardened plaque due to a lack of proper and regular brushing habits. If not treated early, this condition can lead to serious disorders such as gingivitis (gum inflammation) and periodontitis (damage to the supporting tissue of the teeth), which impact adolescents' quality of life and self-confidence. Therefore, education about the dangers of tartar and the importance of maintaining oral health is essential, especially in schools. This community service activity aims to increase adolescents' knowledge and awareness of the dangers of tartar and equip them with proper toothbrushing skills. The activity was held on July 5, 2025, at SMP Negeri 1 Manuju, Bilalang Village, Gowa Regency, and was attended by seventh and eighth grade students. The methods used included interactive education, simulations of toothbrushing techniques according to health standards, and the distribution of leaflets as additional information that students can access again. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests to measure knowledge gains, as well as direct observation of toothbrushing practices. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in students' knowledge scores, namely 31.3 points (from an average of 53.4 to 84.7). Furthermore, 92% of students were able to practice correct toothbrushing techniques. These results indicate that an educational approach combined with simulations and visual media is effective in increasing understanding and changing clean and healthy lifestyle behaviors in adolescents. This activity is expected to become a model for sustainable dental health education in schools and be replicated elsewhere.

Abstract

Hypertension is a global health problem whose prevalence continues to increase every year. This condition is not only a major cause of cardiovascular disease but also contributes to high morbidity and mortality rates in various countries, including Indonesia. One risk factor mitigating this problem is low public awareness of the importance of routine blood pressure monitoring. Therefore, promotive and preventive efforts are needed through health education that is easy to understand and can be applied in everyday life. This community service activity aims to increase public knowledge, especially among the elderly, about hypertension and the application of simple non-pharmacological therapies. One method introduced is soaking feet in warm water with added salt. This method is considered safe, practical, and cost-effective, making it suitable for elderly people in rural communities. The activity was carried out in Mauleng Hamlet, Paccing Village, Awangpone District, Bone Regency, with 15 elderly participants. The activity method included a pre-test to determine the participants' initial level of knowledge, counseling on hypertension, direct compression using warm water and salt foot soaks, and a post-test to measure knowledge improvement. The results showed a significant increase in participants' level of knowledge. Prior to the outreach program, only 7% of respondents had sufficient knowledge about hypertension and non-pharmacological therapy. After the outreach and reinforcement program, this figure increased to 87%. These results indicate that health education combined with practical demonstrations is highly effective in increasing public knowledge. Therefore, it can be concluded that educational activities and warm salt foot soak therapy have proven effective in increasing public understanding of non-pharmacological hypertension management and have the potential for widespread implementation as a health promotion measure.

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a common health problem among the elderly, particularly in women, caused by decreased bone mass influenced by age, hormonal changes, lifestyle, nutritional intake, and physical activity. WHO data (2015) shows that the prevalence of osteoporosis in women increases significantly with age, and in Indonesia, the prevalence has reached an alarming level of 19.7% of the population. West Java has recorded an osteoporosis risk of 22.3% (Ministry of Health, 2015). Low calcium intake and lack of physical activity are modifiable factors that can help prevent bone density loss. This health education program aimed to increase the knowledge of Aisyiyah District Leaders in Cirebon Regency regarding osteoporosis in the elderly, its risk factors, prevention strategies, and its impact on joint health. The target participants were pre-elderly and elderly women, especially members of the Branch and District Leaders of Aisyiyah in Cirebon Regency. The method used included lectures and question-and-answer sessions supported by presentation media. Participants’ knowledge was evaluated using oral pre-tests and post-tests. The program outcomes are expected to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of consuming calcium-rich foods, getting adequate sunlight exposure, and engaging in regular physical activity as preventive measures against osteoporosis. Furthermore, this activity plays a role in reducing the incidence of osteoporosis among the elderly through continuous community-based health education.
