Abstract

Comic strips, beyond entertainment, serve as a medium for expressing public aspirations. This study explores criticism and satire of government policies perceived as unfavorable to the people. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research examines linguistic data from the Instagram account @komik.grontol, covering content from December 2024 to February 2025. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques, and analysis followed the theory of conversational implicature and semiotics. The findings reveal various criticisms, including (a) the 12% VAT increase, (b) the construction of fences and the granting of HGB permits for Laut Tangerang, (c) the appointment of special staff amid budget efficiency efforts, (d) lenient punishments for corrupt officials, (e) the LPG sales policy that burdens the public, (f) the prohibition of students from criticizing meal quality in the MBG program, and (g) the proposal to introduce insects as a protein source in the MBG program. These findings have theoretical implications for the development of pragmatics and visual communication studies, as well as practical implications for the government to be more responsive to public criticism and for creators to convey messages in an ethical and educational manner.

Abstract

This study employs a netnographic approach to analyze public reactions on TikTok to President Prabowo Subianto's anti-corruption speech, focusing on the themes of audit and governance. A total of 129,000 comments were collected, with 24,193 comments (19%) deemed relevant, while 105,777 comments (81%) were classified as non-relevant. The thematic analysis revealed that the largest proportion of relevant comments (46.26%) expressed positive support for the president, with significant attention given to issues of corruption (6.55%), hope for change (6.57%), and calls for a clean government (6.15%). Although the audit theme appeared in only 1.4% of comments, it revealed a modest but meaningful interest in auditing processes within local governance. Other notable themes included village heads and the inspection of public funds. The study also highlighted a prevalence of non-relevant comments, often driven by netizens seeking engagement with the TikTok admin, reflecting a broader trend of performative interaction. Despite this, the research shows that TikTok remains an effective platform for fostering public discourse on political issues and governance. The findings suggest that social media, particularly platforms like TikTok, can play a crucial role in shaping public opinion on anti-corruption policies and can be strategically used to engage citizens in discussions about transparency and accountability.

Abstract

Indonesia, home to one of the world’s largest Muslim communities, relies on mosques as central hubs for worship and religious gatherings. This community service initiative focuses on the Al-Ansor Mosque in Bukit Kemiling Permai, Bandar Lampung, aiming to address key challenges through hands-on engagement. The approach includes coordinating efforts, executing practical activities, empowering locals, distributing essential cleaning supplies, assessing outcomes, and compiling detailed reports. Several issues were identified: a lack of community involvement in maintaining the worship space, insufficient facilities, and concerns over safety. The team behind this project envisions the Al-Ansor Mosque not just as a place of prayer, but as a clean, secure, and vibrant center for religious and social activities. A well-kept mosque environment plays a vital role in uniting people through shared faith and devotion. By fostering open dialogue and encouraging social change, the team aims to inspire lasting community commitment to the mosque’s upkeep. The ultimate goal is to motivate residents to take greater responsibility for preserving this sacred space, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of spiritual and communal life.

Abstract

The Syrian conflict, beginning in 2011, escalated into a complex civil war, challenging the government's counterinsurgency (COIN) efforts. This study analyzes Syria's COIN failure through Clausewitz's Trinity, focusing on the interplay between government, military, and people. Using qualitative document analysis, data from government reports, academic articles, and expert analyses are examined. The research highlights an imbalance in Clausewitz's Trinity: the Assad regime lost legitimacy, the military fragmented, and excessive reliance on force alienated civilians. External support for rebels further hindered COIN efforts. The study underscores the need for balanced COIN strategies, integrating military action, government legitimacy, and popular support. These insights offer valuable lessons for addressing future insurgencies with a holistic approach.
