Abstract

This article discusses the modernization of Islamic thought as a response to the increasingly complex challenges of radicalism and secularism in the contemporary era. Modernization in Islamic thought aims to align religious principles with the dynamics of developments in the era without sacrificing the core values of Islam. On the one hand, radicalism emerges as a movement that rejects all forms of change and modernity, often using the pretext of religion to legitimize violence and intolerance. On the other hand, secularism offers an approach that separates religion from public life, thus potentially reducing the role of spirituality in the social order. Through literature analysis and case studies in several Muslim countries, this article explores the strategy of modernizing Islamic thought that can be a middle ground between the two extremes. The results of the study indicate that the modernization of Islamic thought must be based on a deep understanding of classical texts, accompanied by contextualization according to the social and cultural needs of today's society. In addition, collaboration between Muslim intellectuals and traditional scholars plays an important role in spreading a moderate, inclusive, and relevant understanding of Islam. In conclusion, the modernization of Islamic thought can be an effective solution in bridging the need to adapt to global change without ignoring the essence of Islamic teachings, while at the same time countering the threats of radicalism and secularism. This research contributes to the development of moderate Islamic discourse that is appropriate to the modern socio-political context.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in the context of the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5) with the theme "Build the Soul and Body." The main focus of this research is to explore how applying this theme in the curriculum can affect students' character-building and competency development. This research also explores the effectiveness of applying the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model in implementing the P5 project. Using the PjBL model allows students to develop creativity and independence because they can process ideas and carry out various project activities independently. The research method used was qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews, discussions, and direct field research. The data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach, which is expected to provide valuable insights for curriculum development that is more relevant to future educational needs and contribute to the understanding of strengthening the learner profile of Pancasila through a project-based learning approach. The implementation results show that learners can understand the importance of maintaining mental and physical health and develop 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. These findings suggest that integrating PjBL in the Merdeka Curriculum can be an effective strategy for building learner competencies following the values of the Pancasila Learner Profile.

Abstract

The emotional approach in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning enhances students' understanding and motivation. Focusing solely on cognitive aspects is often less effective in shaping students' character and morals according to Islamic values. The emotional approach enables students to internalize Islamic values more deeply by engaging their feelings and personal experiences in learning. This study employs a literature review method by analyzing various scholarly sources discussing the emotional approach in PAI learning. The findings indicate that storytelling, experiential learning, and collective worship practices can increase students' emotional engagement, making learning more meaningful. Furthermore, a positive relationship between teachers and students and a school environment that supports Islamic values contributes to students' learning motivation. Therefore, the emotional approach should be more widely implemented in PAI learning to achieve more effective and impactful Islamic education.

Abstract

Educational transformation in the digital era requires integrating the deep learning approach based on artificial intelligence with traditional humanistic educational values. This study aims to analyze how these two approaches can be synchronized in an effective, adaptive, and holistic curriculum design. A curriculum combining technological aspects with a traditional approach is expected to comprehensively develop students' academic potential and character. On the other hand, the role of teachers in an increasingly digitalized learning ecosystem must also be reconstructed so that they function not only as teachers but also as facilitators, innovators, and curators of knowledge. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study, analyzing relevant literature on integrating technology in education and the role of teachers in that context. The study results show that synchronization between the deep learning approach and traditional learning requires a curriculum design that is oriented toward mastery of technology and the formation of character values and students' social competence. In addition, strengthening teacher capacity is key to implementing a transformative curriculum based on technology and human values.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology in the digital era has significantly impacted adolescent morality, including that of junior high school students. This study aims to describe the forms of moral degradation occurring among students, analyze the roles and strategies of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers in preventing moral decline, and identify supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing these strategies at SMPN 3 Aceh Barat. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling to determine informants: the school principal, five IRE teachers, and five students. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, while data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the findings was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that although students’ overall moral behaviour is considered reasonably good, various forms of moral degradation are still evident, such as low discipline, lack of courtesy, and misuse of social media. IRE teachers play a strategic role through exemplary behaviour, integrating moral values into instruction, and habituating religious activities at school. Supporting factors for the success of these strategies include teacher commitment, parental support, and a religious school environment. In contrast, the main obstacles include external environmental influences, low internal motivation among students, and limited parental supervision. This study recommends strengthening the synergy between schools, families, and communities to foster morally upright and virtuous student character.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of virtual gifts on TikTok Live as a new face of digital culture that has become increasingly performative, where social recognition is no longer built through authentic interaction but through commodified digital symbols. The research employs a qualitative tafsir-based approach, analyzing Qur'anic verses related to the ethics of social interaction and the realities of contemporary digital culture. The findings reveal that the mechanism of virtual gifts creates an ecosystem of attention and emotional capitalization, driving creators to display themselves—even through extreme acts—in pursuit of superficial social legitimacy. This pattern exposes a paradox: while creativity is facilitated, human dignity is simultaneously diminished, as the illusion of algorithmic recognition measures self-worth. From the Qur'anic perspective, this phenomenon is critiqued as a modern form of riya', as emphasized in QS. Al-Isra' [17]:70 on the innate dignity of humanity, QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:264 on the futility of deeds tainted by riya', QS. al-Hujurat [49]:11–13 on piety as the proper standard of social honor, and QS. al-Munafiqun [63]:4 on the danger of hollow self-image. In conclusion, the culture of pseudo-validation through virtual gifts must be repositioned—not as a space for riya' and instant recognition, but as a digital sphere that affirms spiritual identity, preserves dignity, and cultivates authentic values grounded in faith.

Abstract

The concept of Islamic moderation has gained increasing relevance in response to the global rise of religious extremism and socio-political intolerance. This article explores the moderate Islamic thought of three influential contemporary scholars: Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Nurcholish Madjid, and Abdurrahman Wahid. Each offers distinct yet complementary interpretations of moderation, bridging normative Islamic teachings with contemporary societal contexts. Their approaches emphasize tolerance, pluralism, and constructive engagement with modernity. Using a comparative and qualitative methodology grounded in primary sources and interpretive traditions, this study uncovers the epistemological foundations of their views. Despite differing cultural and political backgrounds, all three thinkers consistently advocate for the principle of wasatiyyah (the middle path) as both a theological and sociological framework. Their contributions provide a normative basis for educational reform, interfaith dialogue, and the cultivation of civic ethics in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

The contemporary ecological crisis—manifested through climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation—requires more than technological and political solutions; it demands ethical and spiritual renewal. This article examines the classical tafsir of al-Qurțubī  (d. 671 H) to explore Islamic environmental thought's theological and ethical foundations. Focusing on four key Qur'anic concepts—khalīfah fī al-ard (vicegerency), 'imārat al-ard (constructive inhabitation), taskhīr (divine subjugation of nature), and the prohibition of fasād (corruption)—this study demonstrates how al-Qurțubī formulated a coherent framework that positions humans as trustees, cultivators, grateful beneficiaries, and moral guardians of the earth. Using hermeneutical textual analysis and comparative readings with other classical exegetes (al-Ṭabarī, Fakhr al-Rāzī, Ibn Kathīr), the study identifies epistemological continuities between medieval interpretations and contemporary Islamic eco-theology. Thinkers like Seyyed Hossein Nasr, M. Izzi Deen, and Richard Foltz reinterpret these classical notions to address modern environmental challenges. The findings indicate that classical Islamic exegesis embeds a sophisticated environmental ethic emphasizing stewardship, sustainability, intergenerational justice, and spiritual accountability. Revisiting al-Qurțubī's tafsir offers historical insight and normative resources for constructing a contemporary Islamic environmental ethic. This framework can serve as an alternative paradigm in responding to the global ecological crisis by reaffirming the sacred interconnectedness between God, humanity, and nature.

Abstract

The changing paradigm of higher education in the modern era demands the integration of intellectual and spiritual development among university students. However, many educational institutions still separate these two dimensions, resulting in a gap between academic knowledge and moral character formation. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education in enhancing students’ intellectual capacity through an integrative approach grounded in Islamic values. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the research utilized in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation involving one pesantren head, four teachers, and twelve university students at the An-Nasuchiyah Student Islamic Boarding School in Kudus, Central Java. The findings reveal that pesantren education plays a strategic role in fostering critical thinking, self-regulated learning, and autonomy through the integration of religious and academic activities. Intellectual traditions such as classical text studies (kajian kitab), bahtsul masā’il (collaborative scholarly deliberation), and muhadharah (public speaking practice) not only strengthen religious literacy but also cultivate analytical and argumentative reasoning skills. The pesantren’s disciplined routines and communal life effectively nurture resilience, social awareness, and ethical consciousness among students. This study underscores pesantren as a holistic educational model that harmonizes spirituality, intellectuality, and morality as the foundation for developing ethically grounded academic individuals. The study concludes that pesantren must continue adapting to technological innovation and research-based curricula to remain relevant in the digital era
