Abstract

Abstract. Public buildings are formed based on public activities and needs. The building must meet the needs of users as a whole. One of the public buildings most needed by the community is a house of worship. For the people of Aceh, one of the houses of worship that is quite often visited is the Baiturrahman Great Mosque, which is located in the center of Banda Aceh City. The existence of disability issues raises questions about the needs of persons with disabilities which makes this question the basis of this research. The question in this research is how accessible is it in a public building, especially for persons with disabilities. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection is done by observation. that the results of the study show that the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh, has not fully implemented the concept of a disability-friendly building. This is because the availability of supporting facilities for persons with disabilities has not been maximized, and some of the facilities provided cannot be used properly, so that when viewed from the perspective of the needs of persons with disabilities, this building cannot operate optimally.

Abstract

The rapid development of commercial housing often overlooks local geotechnical characteristics, particularly in areas dominated by soft soils. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of commercial housing design typologies in terms of engineering geological characteristics in Lamkeneung, Aceh Besar, Indonesia. A descriptive-quantitative approach with an evaluative method was employed using primary data from Detailed Engineering Design (DED) documents and secondary data from engineering geological maps and relevant literature. The evaluation was conducted on three housing types, namely Type 36, Type 52, and Type 70, based on six assessment parameters

Abstract

In 2005, the residential area in Banda Aceh covered 948.5 ha. Recently, the total residential footprint has expanded significantly to 2,982.12 ha. This study aims to evaluate existing residential land use based on geoecosystem characteristics to ensure alignment with land capacity, thereby enabling the formulation of appropriate zoning for residential development. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, utilizing spatial analysis through matching and scoring techniques. This approach characterizes each geoecosystem unit within the study area and assesses them against standard land suitability criteria for settlements.

Abstract

Women’s participation in village development is an important element in promoting sustainable development. Yet, village profiles differ widely, so it remains unclear whether the forms this participation takes are shaped more by a village’s economic base than by uniform regulation. This study compares two villages with contrasting economic profiles, Gampong Lampulo, a fishing-based coastal village, and Gampong Deah Raya, which combines small-trade and religious-tourism activity, to examine the forms of women’s participation in these two villages across five sectors of village development: education, economy, health, tourism, and socio-cultural activities.

Abstract

Sustainable architecture in public open space has become a critical issue in urban revitalization because parks, waterfronts, and adaptive reuse areas must simultaneously support ecological performance, social inclusion, local economy, and cultural continuity. This study analyzes the application of sustainable architecture principles at Taman Seuramoe Krueng Aceh, a revitalized site of the former Peunayong Fish Market in Banda Aceh. Ardiani’s framework was selected because it integrates environmental, social, economic, cultural, and operational dimensions through nine principles and 44 indicators, making it relevant for evaluating Indonesian urban public spaces.

Abstract

Central Aceh Regency possesses a rich vernacular architectural heritage represented by Umah Pitu Ruang, a traditional house that reflects the cultural identity of the Gayo community. However, its application in contemporary tourism architecture remains limited. This study examines the architectural transformation of Umah Pitu Ruang in the design of the Bamboo Umah Pitu Ruang cottage in Aceh Tengah and explores the use of local bamboo as the primary building material. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through literature review, conceptual design analysis, field observation, physical measurement of bamboo, and semi-structured interviews.

Abstract

The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque area in Banda Aceh is one of the most important cultural landscapes in Aceh, combining historical, religious, architectural, and social values. As an ancient mosque with strong ties to the identity of the Acehnese people, preservation of this area cannot be done solely on the building aspect, but must encompass all elements of the cultural landscape such as outdoor spaces, vegetation, circulation patterns, and social and religious practices. This study aims to analyze the elements of the cultural landscape that shape the Banda Aceh Grand Mosque area and formulate a comprehensive preservation approach.

Abstract

The meaning of the sacred is related to holy things, religious, holiness and majesty. The sacred is closely related to houses of worship such as mosques. In its design, the exterior design is very influential in providing the first impression of the sacred value. The Keuchik Leumik Mosque was chosen as the object of research because it is one of the most beautiful mosques in Banda Aceh, so it has an interesting exterior design to study. The sacred is studied in several aspects, namely symbolism, orientation, ornamentation, layout, color and material.

Abstract

This study examines the application of Nusantara architecture in the Great Mosque of Darul Muttaqin, Batang, focusing on the multi-tiered limas roof as a representation of Javanese architectural identity in a contemporary mosque. The research addresses the dominance of Middle Eastern styles in modern mosque design in Indonesia, which may weaken local identity. Using a qualitative descriptive case study approach, data were collected through observation, visual documentation, and literature review. The results indicate that the multi-tiered limas roof functions structurally and climatically and conveys symbolic meanings related to spatial hierarchy and spirituality, affirming the relevance of Nusantara architecture today.

Abstract

Spatial and Social Integration in Achieving Livable Settlements in Urban Lhokseumawe. Lhokseumawe City faces spatial-social disparities from urbanization in Banda Sakti and Gampong Pusong areas. This study analyzes spatial-social integration for sustainable livable settlements in 2025 using sequential explanatory mixed methods: quantitative survey (Likert scale, one-way ANOVA) followed by qualitative (interviews, FGD, participatory observation). Findings reveal Banda Sakti excels in spatial order, public facilities, and social cohesion, while Gampong Pusong suffers infrastructure deficits and social disintegration. Integrative strategies include adaptive spatial planning, community empowerment, and multi-stakeholder collaboration, contributing to policy frameworks forsustainable settlements in developing Indonesian cities.
