Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of using audio-visual media and learning motivation on student learning outcomes in science (IPA) in the subject of green plants, with a specific focus on the process of photosynthesis. Using a quantitative approach with a 2x2 factorial experimental design, this study involved 40 fifth-grade students from SDN Inpres Maidai, divided into two groups based on the type of learning media (audio-visual and images) and level of learning motivation (high and low). The instruments used included achievement tests and motivation questionnaires that had been validated for validity and reliability. The results of the two-way ANOVA analysis revealed that both learning media and learning motivation had a significant influence on student learning outcomes (p < 0.05), with audio-visual media and high motivation contributing the most to academic achievement. However, no significant interaction was found between the two variables, indicating that learning media and learning motivation operate independently in influencing learning outcomes. These findings emphasize the importance of selecting appropriate learning media and strategies to enhance learning motivation as two separate yet complementary approaches in improving the effectiveness of science education at the elementary school level.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low learning outcomes of third-grade elementary students in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS), particularly in the topic of forms of energy. Students experienced difficulties in concentrating during lessons, especially during the day, and the lack of hands-on experiments made it hard for them to fully understand the concepts. The average student score was only 68, below the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKTP) of 75. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of the Inquiry Learning model assisted by Wordwall media on students’ learning outcomes in the topic of energy forms. The research employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design (one group pre-test and post-test), using purposive sampling to select third-grade class III B as the sample. Instrument validity was tested using Pearson correlation, and reliability was measured with Cronbach’s Alpha. Data were analyzed using normality and hypothesis tests. The results showed a significant effect (p = 0.001 < 0.05) of the Inquiry Learning model with Wordwall in improving students’ understanding. The model encouraged active participation, aligned with students' learning styles, and created a more engaging learning environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of short stories (cerpen) as a learning medium on students’ reading comprehension skills. The research was conducted at SDN 105362 Lubuk Dendang, with 20 fifth-grade students participating. Reading comprehension remains a significant challenge in the Indonesian education system, underscoring the need for effective strategies to enhance student learning outcomes. The primary objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of short stories as an instructional tool in enhancing elementary students’ reading comprehension. Addressing the lack of practical and engaging teaching media, this study explores the role of short stories in fostering students’ understanding of texts. Using a quantitative research design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach, students’ reading comprehension was assessed before and after the intervention. The results show a significant improvement: the average pretest score of 58.75 increased to 91.25 in the posttest, indicating a statistically significant gain. These findings suggest that incorporating short stories as a learning medium can effectively enhance students’ comprehension skills. The narrative form of short stories actively engages learners and provides meaningful context for language acquisition. The discussion emphasises the potential of short stories as an alternative teaching medium to increase motivation, involvement, and literacy development among elementary students. Furthermore, this study underlines the importance of integrating diverse and interactive media in literacy education to address different learning needs and preferences. Therefore, educators are encouraged to utilise creative approaches such as short stories to improve reading comprehension outcomes in elementary education.

Abstract

The quality of education at the elementary school level, particularly in Majene Regency, Sulawesi Barat, continues to face various challenges. These include low student motivation, difficulty in understanding learning materials, and limited use of technology in the learning process. These conditions result in suboptimal learning experiences, which ultimately affect the achievement of basic competencies such as literacy, numeracy, and character development, as reflected in the 2022 National Assessment results. In response to these challenges, innovative learning approaches such as gamification have emerged as relevant alternatives, aligning with the development of the digital era and the characteristics of today’s learners. This study aims to analyze students’ preferences toward gamification in elementary school learning. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, using a closed-ended questionnaire with a Likert scale consisting of ten statements. The respondents were 87.35 fifth-grade students from three elementary schools that had integrated game elements into their teaching and learning processes. The results showed that 94.25% of students enjoyed game-based learning, 81.60% felt more motivated when learning through games, and 93.10% stated that they understood the material better when it was delivered through game-based media. Additionally, 95.40% of students expressed the need for educational games that align with their subjects. These findings indicate a strong preference for gamified learning, suggesting that gamification significantly enhances both motivation and comprehension, thereby providing an optimal learning experience for elementary students. Therefore, gamification deserves to be systematically developed within the context of more adaptive, innovative, and contextually relevant technology-based education.

Abstract

Learning motivation is a crucial factor that determines the success of education at the elementary school level. However, some students still exhibit low motivation despite the teacher's efforts to create engaging learning experiences. This study aims to explore the teacher's role as a motivator in enhancing the learning motivation of fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Sindue. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation involving one teacher and six students categorized as having high and low motivation. The results show that the teacher implemented various strategies such as stimulating learning interest, creating a pleasant atmosphere, giving praise, assessments, rewards, and competitions. These strategies were found effective in increasing motivation for most students, although some students faced internal obstacles such as laziness and lack of self-confidence, as well as external obstacles like difficulty with the material and an unfavorable learning environment. The study highlights the importance of individualized and adaptive approaches by teachers to sustain student learning motivation. The implications of this research emphasize the need for teacher training in implementing more personal and context-specific motivational strategies. This study also contributes to the literature on learning motivation at the elementary level through an empirically grounded, context-specific approach.

Abstract

The independent curriculum was present because of the Covid-19 pandemic at the end of December 2019, becoming one of the points where the continuity of education, especially in Indonesia, experienced changes. The learning crisis that occurred accompanied by the emergency conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic had a major impact on changes in education in Indonesia. Based on the results of observations conducted by researchers at SDN Inti No. 2 Pewunu, teachers are able to apply indicators in implementing the independent curriculum. These teachers have been able to implement the independent curriculum in accordance with the guidelines contained in the independent curriculum book and are implemented comprehensively. There are several steps in the independent curriculum learning model, especially in Arts and Crafts subjects, including apperception activities, modeling, constructivism, inquiry, learning communities, assessment, asking questions and reflection. For example, activities such as asking students to create works in Arts and Crafts learning are carried out by working together in groups, which can hone students to be able to work together and think critically. This study shows that implementing the independent curriculum in elementary school, especially in Arts and Crafts, helps improve students' teamwork and critical thinking. The use of constructivist activities, inquiry models, and reflection makes students more engaged in learning. Additionally, group-based tasks and assessments improve their understanding and encourage creativity. This approach provides teachers with the opportunity to adapt their methods to better meet students' needs in the post-pandemic education era.

Abstract

This meta-analysis examines the effectiveness of multi-contextual approaches in mathematics learning and explores moderator variables that influence their impact. A total of 27 effect sizes from 14 empirical studies (2015–2023) involving 2,501 students were analyzed using a random effects model via R Studio. Studies were sourced from major academic databases, including ERIC, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. The analysis yielded an overall effect size of 0.65 (p < 0.0001), indicating a substantial impact on students’ mathematical abilities. Moderator analysis revealed that educational level, instructional model combinations, and geographic region significantly influenced effectiveness, while sample size did not. Notably, integrating mathematics with technology and Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) produced the highest effect sizes. These findings support multi-contextual strategies to enhance mathematics learning outcomes and offer valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and researchers. The study also highlights the need for future research across diverse educational settings to refine and contextualize effective practices. The study encourages educators to adopt culturally and technologically relevant teaching practices. It also calls for policy support in scaling contextual learning models and investing in teacher training across educational settings.

Abstract

Low learning outcomes and student motivation in science and social studies (IPAs) at the elementary school level, often attributed to the limited use of interactive learning media, represent a critical issue that warrants investigation. This study aimed to examine the effects of using interactive PowerPoint (pointer), image-based media, and learning motivation on students’ learning outcomes, as well as to test the hypothesis of an interaction between media type and motivation. The subjects of this study were 53 third-grade students of SDN Inpres Nabarua, divided into an experimental group using a pointer and a control group using image-based media, employing a 2×2 factorial experimental design; data were collected through validated and reliable learning outcome tests and motivation questionnaires, and analyzed using two-way ANOVA after testing for normality and homogeneity. The results indicate that both learning media and motivation significantly affect students’ learning outcomes, with pointer media being more effective than image-based media, particularly for students with high motivation. Additionally, there is a significant interaction between media and motivation in determining learning outcomes. These findings emphasize that the effectiveness of learning media strongly depends on student motivation, suggesting that optimal I-PA learning strategies require a synergy between interactive media and efforts to enhance student motivation, thereby achieving better academic performance.
