Abstract

This study was motivated by the low quality of Indonesian students' mathematical concept understanding, as shown by the PISA 2022 results, and by preliminary observations at SMP Mujahidin Pontianak indicating a relationship between the level of math anxiety and students' conceptual understanding ability. This study aimed to (1) describe the mathematical concept understanding ability of junior high school students experiencing math anxiety, (2) analyse the relationship between the level of math anxiety and mathematical concept understanding, and (3) identify the factors causing math anxiety among junior high school students. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. The research subjects were eighth-grade students of SMP Mujahidin Pontianak in the 2025/2026 academic year, selected based on their level of math anxiety (high, moderate, and low). Data were collected through a questionnaire, a concept-understanding test on the topic of circles, and in-depth interviews, then analysed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results revealed a consistent pattern: the higher the students' math anxiety, the lower their conceptual understanding, particularly on the interpretation and extrapolation indicators. Students with low anxiety demonstrated the most comprehensive understanding, those with moderate anxiety showed fairly good but inconsistent understanding, while students with high anxiety experienced serious cognitive obstacles. Three interrelated factors causing math anxiety were identified: personality (psychological/emotional), intellectual, and environmental/social factors, which jointly influenced the intensity of students' math anxiety. These findings suggest that teachers need to address the somatic, cognitive, and attitudinal dimensions of anxiety simultaneously while strengthening students' interpretation and extrapolation skills through supportive, anxiety-reducing instructional strategies.

Abstract

This classroom action research (CAR) aimed to improve the creativity of eighth-grade students (Class VIII A) at SMP Negeri 7 Kota Pontianak in the Informatics subject through a Canva-based media project using the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model, with the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate (4D) framework embedded in the acting phase. This collaborative CAR followed the Kemmis and McTaggart spiral model across two cycles, each consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The subjects were 38 students, and data were collected through observation sheets and portfolio assessment rubrics covering five creativity indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, and independence, which were analyzed descriptively using mean scores and percentage distributions. The results showed a consistent improvement in students' creativity: the mean score increased from 58.09 in the pre-cycle to 74.41 in Cycle I, with 52.63% of students reaching the "good" or "very good" category, and further increased to 94.11 in Cycle II, with 100% of students reaching the "very good" category, exceeding the 75% success threshold. This improvement occurred progressively across the four PjBL stages, supported by structured idea forms, silent brainstorming, round robin, peer assessment, and role interdependence techniques introduced in Cycle II. These findings indicate that a Canva-based media project within a PjBL framework effectively enhances students' creativity in Informatics learning, particularly in generating original ideas, developing flexible designs, and presenting projects confidently and independently.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the effect of the Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) learning model assisted by instructional videos on the environmental care attitude of eighth-grade students at SMP Bustanul Ulum Lintang Batang in the ecosystem topic. This research employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample consisted of 15 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using an environmental care attitude questionnaire, observation sheets, and pretest-posttest instruments. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test because the data were not normally distributed. The results showed that the average percentage of students' environmental care attitude after the implementation of the SETS learning model assisted by instructional videos reached *84.40%, which falls into the **very good* category. However, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of *0.506* (>0.05), indicating that there was no statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. Therefore, the implementation of the SETS learning model assisted by instructional videos did not have a significant effect on students' environmental care attitude, although descriptively it showed an improvement toward a better level of environmental awareness. Keywords: SETS learning model, instructional video, environmental care attitude, ecosystem, science education.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine the effect of using the Lumio by SMART interactive learning media on the learning outcomes of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Ngabang on the Data Analysis material. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 60 students, divided into an experimental group of 30 students who were taught using Lumio by SMART, and a control group of 30 students who were taught using conventional learning media. Data were collected using multiple-choice and performance tests administered as pre-tests and post-tests. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the experimental group's average score increased significantly from 52.80 in the pre-test to 78.06 in the post-test, while the control group's average score increased from 50.27 to 68.62. Furthermore, the initial abilities of both groups were equivalent before the treatment, as indicated by the pre-test significance value of 0.505. After the intervention, the Independent Sample t-test on the post-test data yielded a significance value of 0.009, which is less than 0.05. This result indicates that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in learning outcomes, proving that the use of Lumio by SMART interactive learning media provides a positive and significant effect on improving student learning outcomes in the Data Analysis material compared to conventional media. Abstract

This study aims to describe students' mathematical creative thinking abilities in solving mathematics problems in terms of mathematical self-esteem on integer material for VII grade of junior high school. The research method used was qualitative with a case study approach. The research subjects were 26 students of VII grade at SMP Pancasila. Data collection techniques included creative thinking ability tests, mathematical self-esteem questionnaires, and interviews. The results showed that most students had mathematical self-esteem in the moderate category, and their creative thinking ability was also dominated by the moderate category. The creative thinking ability of students with high, moderate, and low self-esteem showed different variations, where there is not always a linear relationship between mathematical self-esteem and creative thinking ability. This indicates that other factors influence students' creative thinking abilities in solving mathematical problems. The conclusion of this study is that students' creative thinking abilities in solving integer problems vary at each level of mathematical self-esteem, necessitating attention to both cognitive and affective aspects in mathematics learning.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to examine the relationship between a poly-ethnic campus environment and the adaptation and communication abilities of the 2022 student cohort at PGRI Pontianak University. The study is grounded in the campus's multicultural composition, which creates complex social dynamics that may influence students' adaptation processes and interpersonal communication. A quantitative correlational method was employed using proportionate stratified random sampling. A sample of 280 students from 11 academic programs was selected using the Slovin formula with a 5% margin of error. Data were collected through a four-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation and coefficient of determination (R²). The results indicate that the poly-ethnic campus environment has a positive and significant relationship with students' adaptation ability (r = 0.600; p = 0.000), contributing 36.0%, and with students' communication ability (r = 0.590; p = 0.000), contributing 34.8%. These findings confirm that the more conducive the poly-ethnic campus environment, the better students' adaptation and communication abilities. Abstract

The low mathematical literacy skills of junior high school students are linked to negative perceptions of mathematics and a lack of contextual, visual, and interactive learning media; meanwhile, character development is a crucial aspect that needs to be integrated into mathematics instruction. This study aimed to design and develop a character-based mathematics e-comic covering the topic of probability for eighth-grade junior high school students and to evaluate its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing students' mathematical literacy skills. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Data were collected via validation sheets from media and subject matter experts, teacher and student response questionnaires, and mathematical literacy tests, with a trial group consisting of 26 eighth-grade students from SMP Agape Pontianak. The results indicate that the developed e-comic was highly valid based on assessments by media experts (91.33%) and subject matter experts (94%), highly practical based on the average teacher and student responses (91.88%), and effective based on post-test results, achieving a mastery rate of 80.76% (21 out of 26 students met the Minimum Mastery Criteria). Thus, the character-based mathematics e-comic is suitable for use as an alternative learning medium to improve the mathematical literacy skills of junior high school students regarding the topic of probability

Abstract

Abstract: Mathematical thinking is a critical cognitive skill that enables students to interpret, analyze, evaluate, and draw conclusions when solving mathematical problems, particularly those demanding higher-order reasoning. In statistics learning at the junior high school level, students commonly show considerable variation in their mathematical thinking processes, especially when interpreting statistical data and determining appropriate solving strategies for Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problems. This study aimed to analyze the mathematical thinking profile of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sukadana in solving HOTS problems on statistics, focusing on their ability to identify given and asked information, select relevant concepts or formulas, arrange systematic solution steps, and verify and conclude their answers. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study design was used. Data were collected through diagnostic tests and in-depth interviews with six students purposively selected from class VIII G, representing high, moderate, and low mathematical-ability categories (two students per category); the test instrument was validated by two mathematics education lecturers and one subject teacher, and data credibility was ensured through triangulation. The results showed distinct differences in mathematical thinking profiles across ability levels. High-ability students accurately identified problem information, selected correct concepts, constructed systematic and logical solution steps, and consistently verified their answers. Moderate-ability students understood most of the given information but had difficulty fully interpreting the problem and made minor procedural errors. Low-ability students frequently failed to identify complete information, applied incorrect concepts, made computational errors, and rarely re-checked their final answers. Overall, the findings indicate that the higher a student's mathematical ability, the more systematic and complete their thinking process in understanding, planning, executing, and evaluating solutions to statistics-based HOTS problems. These findings suggest that teachers should strengthen contextual, story-based problem practice, habituate systematic solution-writing, and emphasize answer-checking strategies to improve students' higher-order mathematical thinking in statistics..
