Abstract

This study examines how lighting perception influences reading focus and satisfaction in book cafés in Bandung, Indonesia. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, involving a preference survey and an experimental study conducted at a selected book café. Thirteen female participants were assigned to three distinct seating areas characterized by different lighting conditions. Participants completed reading tasks and evaluated their environmental comfort, focus level, and reading satisfaction. The findings indicate that lighting comfort significantly correlates with focus (ρ = .000, p < .01) and reading satisfaction (ρ = .016, p < .05), although focus and satisfaction were not significantly related. ANOVA results revealed a significant difference in perceived lighting comfort across seating points, with the most favorable conditions found at Point A. These results underscore the importance of lighting design in enhancing the reading experience in multifunctional public spaces such as book cafés. Future research should consider additional environmental variables, including noise and thermal comfort.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and social functions of code-switching and code-mixing in the film Hujan Bulan Juni and to explain how language choice represents identity and social differences among the characters. The film was chosen because it portrays interactions between characters from different cultural backgrounds Javanese and Manadonese which allows for complex patterns of language contact. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method using observation and note-taking techniques on dialogues containing Indonesian, Javanese, and Manadonese linguistic elements. The data were analyzed using the sociolinguistic frameworks of Gumperz (1982) and Wardhaugh (2015) to uncover the social functions and identity meanings reflected in the speakers’ language choices. The findings reveal that code-switching from Indonesian to Manadonese serves to reinforce ethnic solidarity, emotional closeness, and cultural pride, while switching from Indonesian to Javanese reflects politeness, intimacy, and social hierarchy. Meanwhile, code-mixing between Indonesian and Manadonese marks distinctive speech styles and expresses regional identity, whereas code-mixing between Indonesian and Javanese functions to soften utterances and portray the speakers’ courteous demeanor. Overall, language choice in Hujan Bulan Juni is not merely a communicative tool but also a representation of identity and social differentiation within Indonesia’s multilingual society.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the rapid development of digital technology, which has positioned social media as an essential tool for disseminating information and conducting promotion, including in the field of arts and culture. Sanggar Mahligai in Siak Regency, as an institution dedicated to preserving Malay traditional dance, utilizes social media to expand its informational reach, attract public interest, and maintain the existence of traditional arts amid modern lifestyle changes. This research aims to describe how social media is used as a medium for information dissemination and promotion by Sanggar Mahligai. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the head of the sanggar, social media administrators, and followers of the sanggar’s social media accounts. The findings show that Instagram and TikTok serve as the main platforms for sharing information related to training schedules, performance activities, new member registration, and activity documentation. Visual content, the use of trending formats, and active interaction with the audience significantly increase public engagement and interest in the sanggar’s activities. These results indicate that social media plays an important role in strengthening the sanggar’s visibility, fostering two-way communication, and supporting the preservation of Malay cultural arts through consistent and strategic digital practices.

Abstract

This study examines the economic dynamics experienced by migrant women through the perspective of abstract painting as a medium for personal and social reflection. The study uses a qualitative method with an artistic research approach, which departs from the researcher's personal experience as a migrant woman facing increasingly complex economic realities. The rising cost of living, financial constraints, and intertwined academic demands create pressure not only on material aspects, but also on psychological, emotional, and mental conditions. This situation demands adaptation strategies, resilience, and the ability to survive in the face of uncertainty in migrant areas. The dynamics of these experiences are then translated into visual language through an abstract expressionist approach utilizing mixed media techniques. Dynamic line elements, contrasting colors, bubble textures, and layers of material are used as symbols of the tension, struggle, and economic instability experienced by the subjects. The research findings show that abstract painting functions not only as a means of personal expression, but also as a medium for social reflection that records and articulates the experiences of migrant women who are often marginalized. This research contributes to the enrichment of contemporary art discourse, particularly in presenting visual narratives that voice economic issues and women's life experiences in a critical and reflective manner.
