Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Pentagon Assets (PA), Livelihood Strategies (LS), and Sustainable Livelihood (SL) in the community of Kalampadu Village, Ogan Ilir Regency, using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The research framework is based on the Sustainable Livelihood (SL) theory proposed by Scoones (1998) and further developed by DFID (1999). This study adopts an associative research design with a quantitative approach to assess the community's level of sustainable livelihood through statistical analysis. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires, and literature reviews. The sampling method used was probability sampling, with a sample of 188 households selected from a total population of 354, determined using Slovin’s formula. The collected data were analyzed using SEM-PLS. The findings reveal that PA has a significant influence on LS, with a path coefficient of 11.976, while LS makes a substantial contribution to SL, with a path coefficient of 5.136. These results indicate that asset ownership strongly affects livelihood strategies, which in turn supports the achievement of sustainable livelihoods. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers to develop asset-based strategies aimed at enhancing well-being through sustainable livelihood approaches. Policies should emphasize community empowerment, the adoption of green technologies, environmentally friendly skills training, and collaboration among the government, private sector, and local communities to achieve efficient and well-monitored sustainable development.

Abstract

Urban waste management remains a pressing challenge in Indonesia, with Bogor City being among the highest waste-producing areas. Community-based waste banks offer a promising solution by promoting waste reduction, recycling, and economic incentives. This study examines the effectiveness of the Kenanga Waste Bank, a leading community initiative in RW 1 (Rukun Warga, or neighborhood unit), Babakan Subdistrict, Bogor City. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines surveys of 35 waste bank members, in-depth interviews, and observations to assess managerial performance, community participation, and socio-environmental benefits. Data analysis employed Spearman rank correlation and chi-square tests to explore key relationships between participation levels, governance structures, and financial sustainability. The findings reveal strong operational and institutional management but highlight gaps in waste-sorting enforcement and participation in decision-making. While economic and environmental benefits are recognized, financial sustainability remains a concern due to fluctuations in the recyclable market. Strengthening participatory governance, diversifying revenue sources, and enforcing waste-sorting practices are critical for long-term success. This study offers practical recommendations for policymakers, waste bank operators, and community leaders to enhance participation, improve governance, and integrate waste banks into formal waste management systems. By addressing these key challenges, waste banks can serve as scalable models for sustainable urban waste management in Indonesia.

Abstract

Strengthening Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) is crucial for reducing economic disparities in rural areas and promoting sustainable community development. While previous studies have primarily focused on financial structures and regulatory frameworks, this research adopts a participatory approach that actively engages local stakeholders in capacity-building efforts. Using BUMDes Mekarsari in Garut Regency as a case study, the study examines how participatory strengthening programs enhance the socio-economic resilience of rural communities. Employing qualitative methods—including in-depth interviews and field observations—it identifies key factors influencing BUMDes effectiveness, such as continuous training, institutional collaboration, and improved access to finance. The findings reveal that a participatory model not only fosters community engagement but also improves business sustainability and expands economic opportunities. In particular, the involvement of women and local artisans demonstrates the program’s inclusivity and potential for social transformation. Moreover, the integration of digital marketing strategies has opened new market access, further supporting rural entrepreneurship. To maximize practical impact, the study offers concrete policy recommendations, including strengthening institutional support for BUMDes, fostering multi-sector partnerships, and enhancing financial accessibility through local and national policies. These insights contribute to a more inclusive framework for rural economic empowerment, providing policymakers with a strategic foundation for designing community-driven BUMDes programs that ensure their long-term success as catalysts for local development.

Abstract

Indonesia is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes and tsunamis, which often cause significant social and physical impacts. This study aims to examine the role of mosques in disaster mitigation through a case study of community experiences in disaster-prone areas of Yogyakarta. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The quantitative data were collected from 204 households to assess disaster awareness, while qualitative data explored the mitigation practices centered around the mosque. The findings reveal that 94% of respondents know they live in disaster-prone areas, and 91% stated they would evacuate to the mosque during a disaster. The mosque functions as a place of worship and as a structurally resilient evacuation center equipped with disaster-related infrastructure and early warning systems. This study highlights the significant role of mosques in strengthening community preparedness and suggests that such religious-social institutions can serve as effective models for localized disaster mitigation strategies.

Abstract

This study seeks to examine the function of mindfulness in moderating the connection between happiness perception and perceived fairness regarding revisit intention among visitors at Tangkahan, Langkat. This research employs a quantitative methodology via a survey technique; the study population comprises tourists who have visited Tangkahan, Langkat, within the past year. The research sample comprised 300 respondents recruited through purposive selection, specifically targeting travelers with expertise in staying or engaging in tourism activities at the destination. The study's findings demonstrate that the perception of happiness significantly influences the intention to revisit and mindfulness. Moreover, perceived justice exerts a substantial direct influence on revisit intention, however not on mindfulness. Mindfulness does not directly influence revisit intention; instead, it serves as a substantial mediating variable in the association between happiness perception and revisit intention, as well as between perceived justice and revisit intention. These findings affirm that while the experience of happiness and perceived justice directly influence tourists' inclination to return, mindfulness has a significant mediating effect. The novelty of this study lies in its exploration of mindfulness as a psychological mechanism that strengthens the link between tourists' happiness, perceived fairness, and revisit intention—an aspect that has been underexplored in tourism research. By integrating mindfulness into the tourism experience, this study provides fresh insights into how psychological well-being can shape sustainable tourism behavior. From a practical perspective, the findings suggest that tourism managers and policymakers should implement mindfulness-oriented programs, such as guided reflection sessions, meditation spots, or immersive nature experiences, to enhance visitor engagement and loyalty. These initiatives can create a more profound and memorable tourism experience, fostering long-term commitments from travelers. Further research could explore the long-term impact of mindfulness on sustainable tourism behavior and the effectiveness of mindfulness-driven interventions in different tourism contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors influencing the financial performance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia's 3T regions—lagging (tertinggal), frontier (terdepan), and outermost (terluar)—with financial literacy positioned as a moderating variable. Despite playing a crucial role in driving local economic growth, MSMEs in 3T areas face persistent challenges such as limited market access, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of skilled human resources. The study focuses on internal perspective factors, the use of accounting applications, and marketplace platforms as potential determinants of financial performance. Using a quantitative approach, a survey was conducted among MSME actors in Bitung City, a designated 3T area. The data were analyzed using SmartPLS regression. The findings indicate that accounting applications alone do not significantly enhance financial performance without sufficient financial literacy. Conversely, marketplace utilization substantially improves performance by expanding market reach and boosting sales. Internal perspectives show limited influence unless supported by training or external assistance. Although financial literacy does not statistically moderate the relationships tested, practical experience emerges as a critical component. The study underscores the importance of combining digital tools, experiential learning, and institutional support to strengthen the financial performance of MSMEs in remote and underserved regions.

Abstract

At the micro or local level, many Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs are beneficial to communities. Most CSR initiatives focus on the economic aspect through income-generating activities. Previous researchers have extensively discussed the implementation processes and benefits of CSR programs for communities. However, a common challenge in the implementation of these programs is the difficulty faced by organizers in engaging target groups, due to factors such as family communication and internal references. This issue has attracted researchers to explore how communication influences decision-making regarding participation among beneficiaries or target groups of CSR programs, particularly in ensuring that the economic objectives set for target families can be successfully achieved. This study employs a qualitative method, utilizing structured interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) involving 120 informants from CSR target groups considered representative. The findings indicate that the head of the household, as the primary target of the CSR program, communicates with his spouse and extended family when making decisions. The involvement of individuals outside the extended family is based on considerations of trust. The outcomes of these communication processes—among the head of the family, spouse, extended family, and trusted individuals—are significant in shaping a family’s decision to participate in a CSR program. Understanding who serves as a source of influence and inspiration in encouraging families to engage in CSR activities can enhance participation and interest among target communities, ultimately contributing to the success of the program.

Abstract

This study analyzes the strategies employed by Muhammadiyah in addressing the humanitarian crisis affecting the Rohingya ethnic group in Myanmar, along with its positioning within international policy frameworks. A qualitative method was used, incorporating in-depth interviews with the chairman and vice chairman of the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC), who served as key actors in aid distribution in Myanmar, along with three other representatives from Muhammadiyah’s leadership. Secondary data, including academic journals, news articles, online sources, and literature reviews, were also utilized to support the analysis. The findings reveal that Muhammadiyah faces various social, political, and cultural challenges in Myanmar, including local resistance, the politicization of aid, and language barriers. Unlike state-led humanitarian interventions, Muhammadiyah operates under regional diplomatic constraints. These conditions require adaptive negotiation strategies with both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. This study highlights the critical role of faith-based organizations in humanitarian diplomacy and offers a comparative perspective on Muhammadiyah’s position alongside international actors such as UNHCR and ICRC. It emphasizes the need for cross-cultural communication training, integration with ASEAN’s humanitarian frameworks, and stronger institutional partnerships to improve the sustainability of humanitarian missions. Academically, this research contributes to the discourse on humanitarian diplomacy by exploring the intersection of religious-based humanitarianism and international political dynamics. Practically, it provides policy recommendations to enhance aid effectiveness in conflict-affected areas.

Abstract

This article examines the current landscape of research on electric vehicle (EV) policy, emphasizing the critical yet underexplored role of political economy. While existing studies predominantly focus on infrastructure development, sustainability, and subsidy policies, there is a notable lack of attention to the political dynamics and economic influences that shape EV initiatives. This study investigates the implications of EV policies through a bibliometric analysis, utilizing tools such as VOSviewer to map and analyze academic literature on the topic. It provides a comprehensive overview of key themes, including highly cited research, author contributions, country-level outputs, institutional engagement, and network analyses such as co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and keyword co-occurrence. The study also highlights the countries that have significantly contributed to the field. Findings reveal that integrating political economy perspectives is essential for developing comprehensive and equitable EV policies that address the diverse needs of stakeholders. Ultimately, this article calls for a more holistic approach to EV research, advocating a deeper exploration of the interplay between political and economic forces to enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of electric mobility initiatives. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on EV policy frameworks by offering insights into the complex dynamics of political economy, thereby informing policymakers and researchers seeking to navigate the challenges of sustainable mobility transitions.

Abstract

This study examines two contrasting cases: the remote indigenous communities on Mentawai and Rupat Islands (Riau), where the majority of the original populations have formally adopted Christianity and Buddhism as their religious identities. The purpose of this research is to explore how indigenous belief systems are preserved amidst the pressures for religious conformity and to analyze the psychological preferences of remote indigenous communities when choosing one of the state-recognized religions. This study employs a case study design, focusing on remote indigenous communities in Rupat Kepulauan (the Akit people) and Mentawai Island (the Mentawai people). The findings reveal that remote indigenous communities in the Mentawai Islands are generally open to migrants, engage in cross-cultural communication, and experience social change through processes of acculturation, assimilation, and integration. Although a small segment continues to maintain ancestral beliefs exclusively, no discrimination is evident against them. Government efforts to integrate remote indigenous communities with mainstream society are conducted through persuasive empowerment strategies. The results highlight the importance of establishing formal legal recognition for the indigenous belief systems of remote communities.
