Abstract

Pneumonia is a lung infection that causes the air sacs to fill with fluid or pus. This disease can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, with varying degrees of severity depending on the cause and condition of the sufferer. Symptoms include cough, fever, and shortness of breath. Data obtained from the Batam City Health Office of pneumonia in 2023, there were 1,509 cases of pneumonia, the most cases were found in Batam City (1,182 cases), while the fewest cases were recorded in Lingga Regency (5 cases). This Professional Scientific Paper aims to provide medical-surgical nursing care with the application of chest physiotherapy to Ms. N to reduce the amount of sputum for pneumonia sufferers in the inpatient room at Harapan Bunda Hospital, Batam City in 2025. The method used in this Professional Scientific Paper is a case study conducted based on the stages of nursing care including assessment, data analysis, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and nursing evaluation. The results showed a decrease in sputum production on the third day, a decrease in fever, and an improvement in sleep patterns. Patients are expected to understand that chest physiotherapy can reduce sputum production.

Abstract

Stunting in toddlers is a chronic nutritional problem caused by lack of nutritional intake due to feeding that does not meet basic needs. UNICEF data in 2024 shows that the infant mortality rate for toddlers is 48 per 1,000 live births and the neonatal mortality rate is 23 per 1,000 live births. Conditions that cause mortality and morbidity in infants and toddlers include malnutrition, sepsis, pneumonia, and premature birth (WHO, 2023). Factors that cause stunting include nutrition, health, environment, and socio-economy, such as malnutrition in pregnant women and children, recurrent infections, poor sanitation, and limited access to health services and nutritious food (Sari, 2023). The effects of stunting include brain development inhibitions, weakened immune systems, delayed psychosocial and motor development, and suboptimal physical growth. Based on a preliminary study at the Sungai Raya Dalam Health Center, there were 134 children under five who were stunted. This study aims to determine the relationship between maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 0–24 months. The research design used case control with a retrospective approach, involving 58 mothers with toddlers aged 0–24 months. The results showed that mothers with nutritional status with KELK had a higher risk of giving birth to stunted toddlers (72.7%) compared to mothers with good nutritional status (19.1%). The Fisher Exact test yielded a value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), which means that there is a significant relationship between the nutritional status of pregnant women and the incidence of stunting.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnant women is a health problem that contributes significantly to Low Birth Weight (BBLR), a serious issue in Indonesia with a prevalence exceeding 15% according to WHO, and is a major contributor to the high Neonatal Mortality Rate. This study aims to examine the relationship between anemia in pregnant women and the incidence of BBLR at the Sungai Durian Health Center, Sintang Regency. Using a case control analytical research design with secondary data from medical records in 2024, the sample used was 116 respondents, consisting of 58 pregnant women with BBLR babies as the case group and 58 pregnant women with normal birth weight babies (BBLN) as the control group, which were taken by total sampling technique. Data analysis was carried out using the Chi-Square test and the Odds Ratio (OR) with a significance level of 95%. The results of the study show that the incidence rate of BBLR at the Sungai Durian Health Center in 2024 is 25.8%, and the incidence of anemia in pregnant women is 46.6%. Statistical tests showed a significant relationship between anemia in pregnant women and the incidence of BBLR (p < 0.05). Pregnant women with anemia had a 21.758 times greater risk of giving birth to a BBLR baby compared to non-anemic mothers (OR=21.758; CI 95% = 1.45–7.08). The study concluded that there was a relationship between the nutritional status of pregnant women and the incidence of preeclampsia at the Sungai Durian Sintang Health Center.

Abstract

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) indicate a higher prevalence among children compared to other infections, contributing to over 870,000 deaths of children under five years of age each year, or approximately 2,320 children every day. Eucalyptus oil contains chemical compounds such as eucalyptol, cineole, linalool, and terpineol, which produce a warming sensation when applied to the skin. Inhaling eucalyptus oil can relieve respiratory problems because the vapor acts as a decongestant, helping reduce nasal congestion, ease breathing, thin mucus for easier expulsion, and maintain moisture in the respiratory mucosa. The purpose of this study was to analyze nursing care for children with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) experiencing ineffective airway clearance using the intervention of warm water vapor and eucalyptus oil inhalation. The method used was a case study, with data collected through interviews with the patient’s family, observation, physical examination, and nursing documentation. The coloring therapy intervention was given once daily for three consecutive days during the implementation phase. After the administration of warm water vapor and eucalyptus oil therapy to patient An.D, who had an acute respiratory tract infection with ineffective airway clearance, there was an observable improvement in cough intensity and mucus expulsion. The patient’s respiratory rate decreased from 42 breaths per minute to 30 breaths per minute, and oxygen saturation (SpO₂) returned to normal. It can therefore be concluded that warm water vapor and eucalyptus oil therapy has a positive effect on children with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) who experience ineffective airway clearance.

Abstract

Hypertension is a common health problem in the elderly that can affect quality of life. Hypertension in Batam city is a non-communicable disease that ranks 2 and with a percentage of 30.9%. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that there are 50 70% of hypertensive patients who do not comply with prescribed medications. Compliance with taking antihypertensive drugs is important to maintain blood pressure stability. Non-compliance in using antihypertensive drugs is one of the risk factors for increasing morbidity and uncontrolled hypertension events that can worsen the quality of life of hypertensive patients. This study aims to find out "The Relationship between Compliance with Taking Hypertension Medication and the Quality of Life of the Elderly in the Working Area of the Sei Lengkai Health Center in 2024". The research design used in this study is cross sectional. Data collection uses secondary data with the population of hypertension patients in Batam city in 2023 and primary data, namely a questionnaire on adherence to taking hypertension medication and quality of life for the elderly. Sampling was done using a purposive sampling technique with a total of 93 elderly people. The measuring tools in this study are the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) and WHOQOL-BREF questionnaires. Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that the p value is 0.003, this states that there is a relationship between compliance with taking hypertension medication and the quality of life of the elderly in the Sei Langkai Health Center Work Area in 2024. The conclusion of this study is that adherence to taking antihypertensive medication is positively related to the quality of life of the elderly, so efforts are needed to increase medication adherence to support a better quality of life in the elderly. It is hoped that families and health workers will provide support and education to the elderly to maintain compliance in taking their medication to improve their quality of life

Abstract

Intraoperative hypotension, particularly during spinal anesthesia in cesarean sections or major surgeries, is a common complication that can adversely affect maternal hemodynamics and organ perfusion, including fetal circulation. Vasopressors such as norepinephrine, phenylephrine, and ephedrine are widely used to manage this condition. This study employed a scoping review, defined as a type of research synthesis aimed at mapping the literature on a specific topic or field, providing an opportunity to identify key concepts, research gaps, and types and sources of evidence to inform clinical practice, policy-making, and further research. A systematic search was conducted across 10 recent experimental and clinical studies evaluating the effectiveness and safety of vasopressors in adult patients, particularly ASA I–II parturients, during surgical procedures. The results indicate that norepinephrine tends to maintain blood pressure with a lower incidence of tachycardia compared to ephedrine, while phenylephrine effectively prevents systemic vascular resistance decline but may reduce heart rate and cardiac output in a dose-dependent manner. Effects on fetal cerebral perfusion and cerebral oxygenation were generally similar across vasopressors. No significant differences were observed in neonatal Apgar scores or maternal complications. In conclusion, norepinephrine and phenylephrine are effective alternatives for managing intraoperative hypotension, whereas ephedrine increases cardiac output but may elevate the risk of tachycardia. Selecting the appropriate vasopressor is crucial to ensure maternal and neonatal safety.

Abstract

Disasters are global phenomena that continue to increase in both frequency and impact, posing serious challenges to health systems worldwide. One of the crucial components in disaster management is the preparedness of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) during the pre-hospital phase, which determines the speed and effectiveness of the initial medical response. However, multiple studies indicate that EMS preparedness and response capacity remain suboptimal, particularly in areas such as personnel training, intersectoral coordination, communication systems, infrastructure, and policy support. This study aims to map the preparedness and emergency response capacity of EMS in disaster situations using a scoping review approach. The research follows the methodological framework of Arksey and O’Malley (2005), which includes formulating research questions, conducting literature searches, selecting relevant studies, extracting data, and synthesizing findings. Literature searches were conducted through PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. From 114 identified records, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. The review reveals that EMS disaster preparedness varies across countries. The main factors influencing EMS response capacity include: (1) training and competency development of EMS personnel, (2) effectiveness of interagency coordination and communication, (3) availability of medical facilities and infrastructure, (4) national policy and system support, and (5) the use of technology to enhance response efficiency. This scoping review underscores the need for stronger national policies, improved cross-sectoral coordination, and sustainable capacity-building programs to enhance the effectiveness of EMS in disaster response, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia.
