Abstract

The Dayak tribe is a tribe with a very diverse cultural heritage and customs in Kalimantan. The Dayak tribe is known to have a variety of decorative arts with symbols and motifs adapted from the uniqueness of Kalimantan's nature, one of which is the Hornbill (rhinoplax vigil) symbol on its traditional jewelry. Traditional Dayak jewelry is often used in traditional ceremonies and daily activities. However, traditional jewelry derived from Hornbills has begun to be abandoned and replaced by modern-style jewelry. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the cultural value of the Hornbill symbol to the young generation of the Dayak tribe so that cultural preservation can be expressed and its existence can be maintained. This research aims to design Hornbill motif jewelry that is integrated with contemporary touches and adaptation of traditional elements as a form of cultural expression of the Dayak tribe in Kalimantan. The design method used is the Design Thinking method with a descriptive qualitative approach, the data collection technique used is literature study and observation. The results of this research are in the form of a design of Enggang Bungas jewelry consisting of bracelets, ear cuffs, and necklaces. This research can contribute to the preservation of Dayak culture and become a form of media for cultural expression in Kalimantan.

Abstract

In the contemporary era characterized by novel distractions and challenges, we frequently observe the diminished comprehension of biblical narratives within religious education settings, including St. Gabriel Sunday School. Despite ongoing efforts to convey religious messages in a creative and captivating manner, numerous children encounter difficulties in comprehending and internalizing the moral teachings encapsulated within the scriptures. This presents a pertinent inquiry regarding the most effective strategies to engage the younger generation with religious messages in this rapidly evolving and intricate global environment. The primary objective of this research is to design an educational puzzle as a medium for acquiring biblical narratives for children aged 4 to 6 years. Utilizing the SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse) design methodology, this research identifies and develops puzzles that are engaging and facilitate children’s comprehension of biblical narratives. The puzzle is meticulously crafted to enhance children’s engagement and proficiency through an interactive and enjoyable learning experience. The anticipated outcomes of this research include the development of an effective and engaging educational puzzle tailored for children aged 4 to 6 years, thereby supporting their biblical knowledge and overall development.

Abstract

The development of the Kre Alang motif (traditional Sumbawa Songket woven cloth) is currently limited to changing the shape and positioning of the motif, which is not very different from the existing motif. This makes the Kre Alang motif less developed and causes boredom among the artisans and consumers of this woven fabric. The objective of this research is to create Kre Alang woven motifs with ideas from one of the traditional games of the Sumbawa people, namely Barapan Kebo (buffalo race). This research employs a textile craft creation method, starting from the exploration stage, followed by design, and then embodiment. Research data was collected through observation, literature review, and interviews. The results of the research are two Barapan Kebo motif designs on Kre Alang woven cloth by incorporating several parts of the Barapan Kebo game which will be used as the main motif on Kre Alang woven cloth, including the buffalo head, joki, and kareng. In addition, Lasuji's motif is used as a supporting motif.

Abstract

In support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainable design has become one of the main focuses in undergraduate design education. Sustainable design refers to a design process that considers environmental, social, and economic impacts throughout the product lifecycle. This study aims to analyze the implementation of sustainable design in the final projects of Product Design students at Telkom University, as a case study from 2021 to 2023. Using qualitative methods and content analysis, 33 final project samples were evaluated using a sustainable design matrix. The analysis results show that although there is a decline in the quality of certain metrics, such as Biodegradable Materials, there is a positive trend in the use of environmentally friendly materials, material recycling, and efficient, multifunctional design. These findings indicate that students are increasingly aware of the importance of integrating sustainability principles into design, not only as an ethical responsibility but also as an innovative strategy. With a focus on sustainable materials and product durability, students demonstrate their commitment to reducing environmental impact and enhancing the quality of sustainable design.

Abstract

Education is the leading force in human life, according to Kant's statement that humans can only become human through education. Humanistic education empowers individuals by fostering intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development. Art education, particularly within this community, serves as a tool to balance these aspects, promoting harmonious personality development. The Padhang Njingglang Community, founded by Anang Prasetyo in Tulungagung in 2008, targets children who are often overly reliant on digital technology and exhibit behavioral issues such as a lack of politeness and reduced engagement in traditional play. The role of the Padhang Njingglang Community is essential in addressing behavioral challenges among Generation Alpha children through humanistic art education. The community employs the "Happy Memory Activation" method, encouraging children to recall and express happy memories through drawing. This method helps children build self-confidence, enhance creativity, develop emotional awareness, and foster positive character traits. Research on this community is necessary because it emphasizes arts education and spiritual aspects, so it needs to be explored further. The study employs a qualitative phenomenology approach, utilizing data from interviews, observations, and children’s artworks to deeply understand the impact of this educational model.  Findings suggest that when combined with humanistic principles, art can be a transformative medium for childhood education, providing emotional and psychological benefits that extend into adulthood. The Padhang Njingglang Community exemplifies how integrating art into education can effectively address the unique challenges of modern childhood, especially in the digital age.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of social media on young artists' self-image and creative process within a studio practice context, exploring how digital influences shape their visual identities and thematic choices. Through Feldman’s art criticism model comprising description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment, this study provides a structured critique of students’ artworks. It examines how social media aesthetics guide their artistic decisions and influence their conceptual frameworks. The study uses qualitative methods, including interviews, observations, visual analyses, and documentation, to capture primary data on the interaction between digital media and creative expression. Findings reveal that social media informs students’ stylistic choices and prompts critical reflection on external influences affecting their artistic practice. Feldman’s framework aids students in critically analyzing existing works, enhancing their observational skills, and strengthening their contextual and conceptual thinking during the initial stages of creation. This approach offers a valuable alternative pedagogical method for painting courses in art universities, encouraging students to engage analytically with digital aesthetics in their creative development.

Abstract

Every region in Indonesia has strong art with its characteristics, one of which is wood carving. Local wisdom in each region saves the uniqueness of its patterns and forms so that carving art in Indonesia becomes rich in identity and valuable cultural expressions. Of the many carving arts, the Batak region is famous for its carving art in the form of a lion, which is often found in the traditional houses of the Batak Toba. The lion carving symbolizes the figure of a generous king. In addition, lion ornaments in the Batak community are also believed to be bad luck repellents, which are thick with magical symbolic values inherited from the ancestors. Unfortunately, along with the times and technology, the art of Singa Batak carving is now starting to be forgotten and less recognized, especially by the younger generation. So, this research and design was carried out, as an effort to make local cultural artifacts closer to the current generation, especially in the Batak community and North Sumatra region. The research generally used a qualitative approach, namely visual adaptation. The result is a Latin typeface “Gorga”, inspired by the Singa Batak carving with the concept of “firm and dynamic”, which has been tested, then implemented on several regional tourism promotional media to preserve Batak culture through modern visual expression. This typeface is expected to be a bridge that perpetuates and preserves the noble values of Batak culture to the current and future generations.
