Abstract

Teaching practicum is one of the prominent issues in education faculties and many studies explored the implementation of teaching practicum in many regions by focusing on several aspects. However, after the pandemic era, how the ‘online’ generation of EFL pre-service teachers perceived their teaching practicum remains unexplored. This current study shed some light on how the ‘online’ generation of EFL pre-service teachers perceived their teaching practicum, the challenges the faced, and how ‘online’ learning during the pandemic changed their perspectives. Using narrative inquiry, the data of this study was gathered from seven graduates of English language education department who experienced online learning during the pandemic but had their teaching practicum offline. The data was collected through open-ended questionnaire and in-depth interview to elicit the story from their experiences during their enrolment in teaching practicum. The collected data were analysed thematically. The findings showed that the EFL pre-service teachers perceived positively on offline teaching practicum. Despite the challenges, they were more motivated to learn and improve their capability. Online learning during the pandemic has improved their ability in integrating technology in their teaching which boost their confidence. It also changed their belief that teaching can be flexible and adaptable to any condition. For that purposes, teachers should be creative and always improve their capability.

Abstract

Implicature was firstly coined as a strategy to create effective communication. It works differently when it has come to politicians. This study investigates the implicature used by Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in the first 2024 U.S presidential debate focused on war issues. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to explore how the candidates used implicature and its use in political discourse. The result showed that both candidates violated Gricean theory of maxims to create implicature to hide and imply their real meaning. It is common in political discourse especially in presidential debate. This study was limited to war issue. Further research might be needed to investigate two areas; political implicature itself and war issues.

Abstract

Socio-cultural content in textbooks help EFL teachers to prepare students to be global and local English speakers. Therefore, the proportion of the socio-cultural aspect in English textbooks should be distributed appropriately, whether local or intercultural. This study aims to understand Indonesian English teachers’ perspective on the socio-cultural content in English textbooks. This study is a mixed- method case study, involving 15 experienced English teachers. The data is collected through a questionnaire, distributed through WhatsApp by adhering to convenient sampling techniques. Data were analyzed following descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. This study highlights the critical role of cultural education in English language teaching, underscoring its functions in enhancing linguistic proficiency and also fostering intercultural competence. Participants recognize the value of integrating both local and intercultural content, with a strong preference for locally relevant materials that resonate with students' cultural backgrounds. However, this study also stresses the importance of flexibility in utilizing textbook materials. The researcher acknowledges that the limited number of participants hinders the ability to generalize the findings to a wider context. Future studies should involve more participants from a wider context and also investigate students' perspectives or conduct classroom observations to deepen the study's overall impact.

Abstract

This study focuses on investigating semantic errors in English to Indonesian translation using DeepL Translate, with the aim of evaluating the extent of semantic accuracy of this translation tool. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, where data is collected by observing translations during a conversation between a native English speaker and a native Indonesian speaker. Each translation was analysed using a qualitative descriptive method to identify semantic errors, which were classified into three categories: inappropriate word choice, loss of implicit meaning, and ambiguity of sentence structure. The results showed that out of 50 translated sentences, there were 15 semantic errors, with inappropriate word choice being the dominant category. The conclusion of this study is that while DeepL is capable of producing relatively good translations, its limitations in understanding semantic context remain a significant bottleneck. The study recommends further development of the automatic translation algorithm and training of users to use the technology critically and judiciously. Keywords: deepL translate, english to indonesian translation, semantic errors
