Abstract

This study aims to analyze the academic burnout among final-year students of the English education department in the 2023-2024 academic year at IAIN Parepare. Data collection applied survey methods using Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) with Likert Scale to 93 final year students who are working on their thesis. Statistical analysis methods used include Kolmogorov-Smirnov for normality testing and Spearman Correlation to measure the relationship between variables. The result shows that the final year students experienced medium level of academic burnout. 57% of them felt emotional exhaustion, 51% realized they were experiencing depersonalization, 52% were exposed to personal achievements. Overall, the data indicates the final year English education students experienced moderate burnout across all dimensions, which significantly impacted their emotional well-being, engagement in academic roles, and personal accomplishment perception. These results suggest that institution should consider implementing more intensive emotional and academic mentoring programs for final year students. This could include counseling, stress management sessions, and psychological support that can help reduce emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. In addition, the supervisors are expected to provide adaptive mentoring, understand individual needs, and help students develop realistic strategies to complete their thesis. These efforts are expected to improve academic well-being, so that students can complete their studies optimally and confidently.

Abstract

This research aims to identify and analyze the English language learning needs of non-English major students, specifically those studying economics. Utilizing a questionnaire distributed among students, the findings reveal that a significant majority (80%) perceive their English proficiency as beginner level, highlighting an urgent need for foundational language skills relevant to their field of study. The results indicate a strong preference for practical learning materials, particularly those related to economics, such as reading economic materials (70.6%), speaking skills with clients (76.5%), and mastering vocabulary related to economics (65.7%). Furthermore, the analysis highlights a gap between the current knowledge and the proficiency required for academic and professional contexts. Students expressed a desire to engage in learning activities that promote interaction and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of developing a curriculum tailored to their specific needs. This study underscores the necessity of implementing a needs-based curriculum that incorporates active learning strategies, thereby enhancing students' English language skills and preparing them for future workplace challenges in the field of economics.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the role of Role-Playing Games in students' speaking motivation and how they maintain it. It is because in this era, video games, particularly Role-Playing Games (RPGS), have gained significant popularity among young generation. Recently, even in the academic field, video games' effect on motivation to learn English has received considerable attention among researchers. However, motivation in speaking English through role-playing video games, particularly focusing on college students, remains an underexplored area of research. Therefore, the researcher decided to conduct research on “Learners' motivation to speak English Through Role-Playing Games.” Two research questions were raised: 1) How do Role-Playing Games (RPGs) motivate learners to speak English? 2) How to maintain a learner's motivation to speak English when playing Role-Playing Games (RPGs)? Guided by Self-Determination Theory by Edward L. Deci and Richard Ryan, this research employed descriptive qualitative methods. The research participants were English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) students of Sanata Dharma University, who were carefully selected using purposive sampling. The data was collected using in-depth interviews with five interviewees. The researcher analyzed the data using thematic analysis, which includes transcription, coding, and interpretation of the collected data. The result showed that role-playing games can motivate learners to speak through interaction between players, the existence of goals, and positive feedback from peers. Furthermore, staying curious and remembering the goal can maintain learners' motivation to always speak English when playing games. This research offered valuable insights for learners and educators which might be useful for future education.

Abstract

Dilan 1990 is a popular Indonesian film known for its romantic dialogue and engaging narrative. This study analyzes the use of flirtatious remarks within the film through Grice's Cooperative Principle, focusing specifically on the concept of flouting his four maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relevance, and Manner. The analysis reveals that the maxim of Relevance is most frequently flouted (18 instances, 32%), followed by Quantity (17 instances, 30%), Quality (15 instances, 26%), and Manner (7 instances, 12%). This pattern suggests that the characters prioritize emotional expressiveness and romantic appeal over strict adherence to conversational norms. The flirtatious remarks often manipulate language strategically to heighten romantic tension and evoke humor, which significantly contributes to the film’s charm and cultural resonance. These findings provide valuable insights into the pragmatic strategies of flouting used in romantic discourse and their impact on viewer engagement and narrative effectiveness, highlighting the complexities of youthful romance.

Abstract

This study examines how pop culture enthusiasts use language on the @westenthu auto-base account to express identity and foster community in digital spaces. Tweets from October 3 to October 5, 2024, are analysed qualitatively through document analysis to identify linguistic patterns, contextual usage, and cultural dynamics. The limited timeframe was chosen to ensure a focused, detailed examination of interactions without overwhelming data volume, which is essential for qualitative research. Findings reveal the frequent use of code-switching, code-mixing (e.g., “drop ur fav Christmas wst movies yang seru plss”), slang (e.g., “nonton Princess Diaries dimana ya? Tia!”), and informal language, illustrating the dynamic interplay between language and identity in online communication. These linguistic practices show how platforms like X (formerly Twitter) not only facilitate interaction but also create spaces for identity construction and rapid language evolution. By analysing specific language features, this research offers insights into the intersection of sociolinguistics and digital communication, highlighting how language adapts and thrives in digital environments.

Abstract

This study uniquely explores language testing's dual role as an evaluative and reflective tool, offering actionable recommendations for improving teaching practices in EFL contexts. Integrating listening and speaking assessments highlights how reflective tools can enhance communicative skills and pedagogical strategies in higher education. The findings underline the need for innovative approaches to address students' speaking confidence and practical teaching implications. The method used in this study is a mixed approach, combining quantitative through a survey of 25 third-year students from the English literature department of Universitas Negeri Medan and qualitative through interviews and class observations. The results showed that most students felt that the listening and speaking tests helped identify their weaknesses, provide clear feedback, and increase their confidence. However, while this test is beneficial, there are challenges in increasing student confidence, especially in speaking. The implications of this study suggest that using tests as a reflection tool can improve the quality of communication skills teaching and learning, but further support is needed to achieve optimal results.

Abstract

This research investigates how the pesantren environment shapes students' motivation and attitudes toward learning English and suggests strategies to improve English education in these institutions. The study employed a qualitative approach, involving eight English language teachers from pesantren schools in Cirebon and nearby regions, selected via a distributed teacher data form. The results highlight that students' motivation and attitudes are significantly influenced by institutional support, well-structured programs, and teacher-student collaboration, rather than whether the pesantren is categorized as modern or semi-modern. Pesantrens that foster immersive English environments and implement clear programs show higher levels of student motivation. Conversely, a lack of structured support contributes to disengagement. This study concludes that robust institutional strategies and collaborative efforts are pivotal for advancing English education in pesantren, offering insights into improving religious-based learning contexts.
