Abstract

This study investigated the effect of short story-based instruction on EFL students’ creative writing performance. A quantitative pre-experimental study using a one-group pre-test–post-test design involved 20 third-semester students in an English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram. Data were collected through a creative writing test assessed using an analytic rubric covering content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. Descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test were used for data analysis. The results showed a substantial improvement in students’ writing performance, with the mean score increasing from 67.85 to 88.30. The Wilcoxon test indicated a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (Z = –3.825, p < .001), while the effect size (r = 0.86) indicated a large practical effect. These findings suggest that short story-based instruction can support students’ originality, idea development, and expressive language use. The study provides empirical support for integrating short stories into creative writing instruction in EFL higher education.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of illocutionary speech acts in the film My Oxford Year. Although previous studies have analyzed illocutionary speech acts in films, most focus on identifying speech act types, with limited attention to the role of contextual and non-verbal elements in interpreting speakers’ intentions. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the types and functions of illocutionary speech acts used by the main character in My Oxford Year. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of dialogues containing illocutionary speech acts, supported by contextual information such as facial expressions, gestures, and intonation. The data were collected through observation, transcription, and note-taking, and analyzed using Searle’s (1979) theory of illocutionary speech acts and Leech’s (1983) theory of illocutionary functions. The findings revealed 76 utterances containing illocutionary speech acts. Assertive speech acts were found to be the most frequently used type, particularly in expressing information, opinions, and beliefs. In terms of function, collaborative functions appeared most frequently, indicating that the characters mainly used language to exchange information and maintain interpersonal relationships. These findings suggest that the interpretation of illocutionary speech acts is influenced not only by the linguistic form of the utterances but also by the context and accompanying non-verbal expressions. Therefore, this research contributes to pragmatic and discourse studies by demonstrating how verbal and non-verbal elements work together to construct meaning and shape communication in film discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ perspectives toward the use of Quizizz Paper Mode as a grammar assessment tool at Al-Mardliyah Islamic Boarding School, Tambakberas, Jombang. The study also explores the advantages and obstacles experienced by students during its implementation. Considering the limited access to gadgets and the internet in Islamic boarding schools, Quizizz Paper Mode was selected as an alternative technology-based assessment that does not require students to use smartphones. This research employed a mixed-method approach using a convergent design. Quantitative data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed to 40 students, while qualitative data were obtained from interviews, open-ended questionnaires, and classroom observations involving 20 students. Both datasets were analyzed separately and then integrated to provide a comprehensive understanding of students’ perspectives. The findings reveal that students generally have positive perceptions of Quizizz Paper Mode as a grammar assessment tool. Quantitative results indicate that most students agreed that Quizizz Paper Mode is easy to use, helps improve grammar understanding, provides effective instant feedback, and increases motivation and engagement during assessment. These findings are supported by qualitative data, which show that students felt more enthusiastic, focused, and confident when learning grammar, particularly in gerund and pronoun materials. The instant correction feature enabled students to identify mistakes and learn independently without always relying on teacher explanations.

Abstract

Reading habits and writing performance have become two of the most crucial issues in the educational field, including language education. One of the reading aspects is books read, and one of the writing aspects is grammar and writing fluency. This study aims to investigate the correlation among students’ books read, their grammar, and their writing fluency. The study used a quantitative method. The books read questionnaire and writing test were administered to a group of 77 students. Analyses using Pearson product-moment correlation showed a significant correlation between books read and grammar (r = .265) and books read and fluency (r = .315). Furthermore, regression analyses discovered that students’ books read could predict grammar (7.0%). Meanwhile, students’ books read could predict fluency of writing (9.9%). Finally, this study proposed that through books reading, students can overcome the difficulties they meet when do writing especially grammar and fluency.

Abstract

Slang expressions present unique challenges in audiovisual translation due to their informal, context-dependent, and culturally specific nature. This study aims to identify the translation techniques used for slang expressions in the Indonesian subtitles of the film Zootopia 2 on Disney+ Hotstar and to determine the most dominant technique. A descriptive qualitative approach utilizing document analysis was employed. The research data consists of 20 slang words and expressions identified in the English dialogue alongside their Indonesian subtitle equivalents. Data collection involved repeated viewing, identification, comparison, and classification based on Molina and Albir’s (2002) translation technique theory. The results reveal the use of six techniques: Established Equivalence, Adaptation, Linguistic Compression, Borrowing, Literal Translation, and Modulation. Established Equivalence was the most frequently used technique, accounting for 11 cases (55%), followed by Adaptation (15%), Linguistic Compression (10%), Borrowing (10%), Literal Translation (5%), and Modulation (5%). These findings indicate that the translator preferred familiar and natural Indonesian expressions to convey contextual meaning while maintaining subtitle readability and audience comprehension. Thus, it can be concluded that Established Equivalence is the dominant technique, playing a crucial role in producing natural, easily understood, and contextually appropriate slang translations in audiovisual subtitles.

Abstract

This study examines how internalized object relations, emotional misattunement, and maternal trauma shape the representation of the mother-daughter bond between Evelyn and Joy Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), using Melanie Klein's and Donald Winnicott's Object Relations Theory. Although the film has attracted scholarly attention for its treatment of immigrant identity, existentialism, and multiversal narrative structure, no prior study has analyzed it through an object relations lens. Using a qualitative descriptive design, this study analyzes purposively selected scenes depicting Evelyn's and Joy's psychological states and their relational dynamics, interpreting them through Kleinian concepts of splitting, and Winnicottian concepts of the holding environment and the good-enough mother. The multiverse is read as a visual metaphor for Joy's psychological fragmentation resulting from repeated emotional misattunement. The analysis shows that Evelyn's unresolved childhood trauma produces a controlling, invalidating parenting pattern that Joy internalizes as rejection, fragmenting her sense of self into the alter ego Jobu Tupaki; reconciliation becomes possible once Evelyn replaces control with unconditional presence, illustrating how emotional repair can interrupt intergenerational trauma.

Abstract

This study aims to implement the Game-based Total Physical Response (TPR) method to enhance English vocabulary acquisition among primary school students. To achieve this objective, the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method was employed to examine the efficacy of TPR implementation at SDN 22 Air Salek, Banyuasin, Sumatra Selatan, Indonesia. Grounded in this practical methodology and its epistemological framework, the findings demonstrate that the utilisation of TPR is capable of significantly enhancing vocabulary acquisition among primary school students. However, within this context, TPR must be supported by supplementary media and alternative pedagogical methods, such as flashcards and game-based learning, coupled with explicit and precise instructions. The application of this integrated approach ultimately resulted in 95% of the students achieving a comprehensive understanding of both the meaning and context of the target vocabulary. These outcomes offer valuable theoretical and practical contributions, asserting that the application of TPR must be underpinned by complementary methodologies and engaging visual media to drive pedagogical success.
