Abstract

This study examines the pragmatic analysis of deixis in the script of the 2012 animated film Hotel Transylvania. The study utilises a qualitative descriptive research approach to define the type of deixis, elucidate their function of deixis, and analyze their pragmatic role, encompassing personal, spatial, temporal, discourse, and societal deixis, as manifested in the film's conversation. Employing Yule’s (1996) and Levinson’s (1983) frameworks, the results indicate that personal deixis predominates the script, delineating relationships and emotional profundity, especially between Dracula and his daughter, Mavis. Spatial deixis differentiates the monster hotel as a secure refuge from the human realm, hence reinforcing theme dichotomies. Temporal deixis organises the narrative chronology, generating suspense and emphasising generational disparities. Discourse deixis preserves cohesiveness and amplifies humour, whereas social deixis highlights hierarchy and closeness in character interactions. The study emphasises that deixis not only aids communication but also enriches storytelling by connecting linguistic expressions to wider narrative and emotional contexts. This research enhances pragmatic studies by providing insights on deixis in animated films, specifically in interactions between human and supernatural characters, thereby deepening the comprehension of language use in varied narrative contexts.

Abstract

The use of learners' first language (L1) within target language instruction remains a contentious issue in language education. This study investigated the impact of code-switching on students' paragraph writing performance in target Language (L2) classroom. Employing an experimental research design, data were gathered through pre-tests, post-tests, and semi-structured interviews. The participants consisted of second-year university students enrolled in a Sophomore English course, which focuses on foundational writing skills. Based on pre-test results, 68 students majoring in Dawro Doonaa (Dawro language) were systematically divided into two groups: a control group (n = 33), where English was used exclusively as the medium of instruction, and an experimental group (n = 35), where code-switching to the first language was permitted. Upon completion of the instructional intervention, post-tests were administered, and two instructors were interviewed to provide additional insights into student performance. Statistical analysis conducted using SPSS version 26 revealed no statistically significant difference in overall paragraph writing performance between the two groups (p = 0.46). Nevertheless, the experimental group demonstrated marked improvement in specific dimensions of writing, notably explicitness and idea development. These findings underscore the potential pedagogical value of judicious L1 use, suggesting that EFL instructors and policymakers should critically assess its role rather than entirely exclude it from classroom practice.

Abstract

This research aims to create a learning medium for English language learners using the digital design platform Canva. The subjects of this study were 22 students from Class VIIIA at Miftahul Jannah Palangka Raya. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach utilizing the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). The instruments utilized for the purposes of data collection pertaining to validation and trial phases were interviews and questionnaires. The data were analyzed, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The validation results of the e-module listening indicate that the ratings from media experts were 90.7% and from material experts were 100%, which can be categorized as very feasible. A small group test was done on six Class VIIIA students using a random sampling technique, yielding a percentage result of 9.27%. Meanwhile, the large group test yielded a percentage of 93.88%, which was classified as very commendable. The results of this study help teachers in teaching and provide supporting media for students. Theoretically, this research aligns with Vygotsky's theory of social interaction, which posits that listening to audio represents a form of human interaction with media. The practical implications of this research are that it provides a basis for the development of interactive listening e-modules for use in listening learning.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal how Japanese culture is being redefined as a dynamic social process. The social dynamic processes involve emotional experiences that are formed from individual perspectives into collective feelings. It views culture as something that continues to develop along with social changes and the collective feelings felt by society. These ideas are represented in the film Kubo and the Two Strings (2016). This research uses a qualitative approach to Marxist literary criticism. The film Kubo and the Two Strings is not only as entertainment but also as a representative of deep social criticism of social movements regarding power dynamics and cultural identity. This study contributes to the field of Marxist studies by highlighting cultural dynamics and how the structure of feelings works in society to create newness without abandoning conventional traditions to achieve balance. In addition, it provides insights for future research and encourages broader exploration of increasingly diverse cultural dynamic contexts which influences the interpretation of defining culture itself. The results of this research prove that Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) represent a redefinition of Japanese culture in terms of the 3 main aspects dominant, residual, and emergent. Supported by the structure of feelings that were felt by Kubo. These findings are a powerful example of how art can serve as a tool to examine changes in culture.

Abstract

The research analyzes the process of identity formation in adolescence experienced by Margaret, the main character in the film Are You There God? Its Me, Margaret and relates it to concepts in identity theory, particularly Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory. This research uses descriptive-qualitative methods and literature studies by focusing on literature in the form of film scripts. The research object includes the movie script and focuses on Margaret's search for self-identity. Data was collected through literature research, using primary data from the movie and secondary data from articles, author biographies, and books related to the research. This data collection method is in accordance with the problem formulation and research objectives. The data analysis stage uses content analysis, including identification, classification, and interpretation of Margaret's character in the movie. The results show that there are four points of results during Margaret's search for self-identity, namely aspects of confusion over self-identity, beliefs that are adopted, search through internal dialogue with God, and conformity with Erik Erikso's theory of self-identity. From all the conflicts experienced by Margaret, she was able to get through the stage by finding confidence, having a clear direction, and even being able to remain herself.
