Abstract

Technology has become part of a strategy to improve the quality of learning, including in elementary schools. However, the specific influence on student learning activity still needs to be proven empirically. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of Wordwall integration in learning to encourage increased student learning activity by comparing student learning activities that integrate Wordwall with conventional learning. This study uses a quasi-experimental design in the form of a posttest-only control design. The population in this study were all students of 4th grade SDN 3 Parepare, as many as 108 people, while the sample used was class 4.1 as an experimental class with 37 students and 4.2 as a control class with 36 students. The treatment given to the experimental class was to integrate Wordwall during the learning process from the beginning to the end of learning. The research data were obtained from the posttest of the observation results of learning activity by observers in the experimental and control classes. The data analysis technique was the Independent Sample T-test. The result is that students in classes that integrate Wordwall into their learning have better learning activities. The inferential statistical analysis results showed Sig (2-tailed) = 0.00 <0.05, so H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Thus, this study concludes that there is a difference in learning activity between students taught with the integration of Wordwall game media and students taught with conventional media. Wordwall integration into learning can effectively encourage learning activity. Future researchers can examine more in-depth aspects related to the use of Wordwalls in elementary school learning, such as cognitive aspects, challenges and barriers.

Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of English lecturers at the Faculty of Languages and Culture, University of 17 Agustus 1945 Semarang, regarding the use of QuillBot, an AI-powered paraphrasing tool, in academic writing. In an era where digital tools are transforming educational practices, QuillBot offers features such as grammar improvement, paraphrasing, and plagiarism prevention, which are particularly beneficial for non-native English speakers. Employing a quantitative research approach, data were collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with seven English lecturers familiar with QuillBot. Findings reveal that 85% of lecturers perceive QuillBot as beneficial for enhancing students' paraphrasing and rewriting skills, while 70% believe it improves grammar and sentence structure. However, 30% expressed concerns about over-reliance on the tool, which may hinder the development of students’ independent writing abilities. The study underscores the importance of integrating QuillBot into teaching strategies responsibly. While its utility in fostering academic integrity and writing proficiency is evident, lecturers emphasize the need to balance its use with traditional learning methods to ensure holistic language development. The research highlights the potential of QuillBot to supplement instruction, but cautions against its overuse, which might compromise critical thinking and originality in student writing. Recommendations include incorporating QuillBot into process-oriented writing pedagogies, promoting digital literacy, and utilizing peer-review sessions to mitigate dependency. The study contributes to the discourse on AI-driven tools in education, advocating for a balanced approach that maximizes their benefits while maintaining academic integrity. Limitations include the small sample size and focus on a single institution, suggesting avenues for future research involving diverse contexts and quantitative assessments of QuillBot’s impact on writing quality and plagiarism rates.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a novel and practical syllabus for the Integrated Course subject designed explicitly for English Education Department students at IAIN Ponorogo. Using Borg and Gall's Research and Development (R&D) model, the research followed a systematic approach that included needs analysis, planning, prototype development, expert validation, product trials, and finalization. A key innovation in this syllabus is its integration of three distinct syllabus types: competency-based, content-based, and task-based. The syllabus includes 14 carefully sequenced topics, progressing from the simplest to the most complex, covering essential Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing areas. Offered as an 8-credit course with four meeting hours per week, it incorporates active and cooperative learning methods, emphasizing student-centered instruction. Another novel feature is the use of varied instructional media—audio, visual, and audio-visual materials—that connect students' prior experiences with the course content, making learning more dynamic and relatable. Assessment in the syllabus is comprehensive, combining both product and process evaluations to provide a well-rounded measurement of student progress. Expert validation and field testing confirmed that the final product is practical and highly applicable for the first-semester English Education students at IAIN Ponorogo, offering a tailored and impactful learning experience.

Abstract

Reading is essential for English language learners, as it enhances their comprehension and academic success. However, eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Secang confronted challenges regarding reading comprehension, necessitating the implementation of suitable learning strategies to improve their understanding of texts. The objective of this study is to find out how effective is the use of Index Card Match strategy for students' reading comprehension improvement of narrative text and to find out the difference in reading comprehension of narrative text between the students who are taught by using Index Card Match strategy and STAD (Students Team Achievement Division) strategy. This study carried out quantitative research in Quasi-Experimental Design. Two classes were involved in this study, class VIII-F (experiment class) and class VIII-G (control class), with 65 students at SMP N 2 Secang. Reading comprehension tests were administered as the instrument for collecting data. The result of this study reveals that the experiment class showed an improvement in their posttest scores compared to the pretest. Moreover, the N-gain score results in 48.6013, meaning that the Index Card Match strategy falls into the less effective category. The independent sample t-test reveals a significant value of 0.071, which exceeds 0.05, indicating that the scores of the two groups are pretty similar, as well as the acceptance of H0 (null hypothesis). This study holds significant implications for enhancing teaching and learning practices in junior high school contexts. The findings can contribute to developing adaptive learning strategies, ultimately improving students' engagement and academic performance in reading.
