Abstract

The post-school transition program prepares children with special needs (children with disabilities) for the transition from school to work, to the community, or to higher education at university. Children with disabilities have the least opportunity to get a job and continue their higher education because of their limitations. In addition, many teachers in inclusive schools need information about post-school transition programs, especially in the academic field. Therefore, it is necessary to provide assistance for teachers to obtain adequate information related to academic transition programs for children with disabilities in inclusive schools. This study aimed to provide mentoring on the post-school transition program to improve the understanding of the academic transition program for inclusive school teachers in Surakarta. This study used a one group pretest posttest design. The respondents of this study were 30 inclusive school teachers in Surakarta. The analysis technique used in this research is paired t-test analysis by comparing data before and after the implementation of mentoring. The results of the analysis showed that the value of t= -9.182 with p=0.0001 (p<0.05). These results indicate that there is a significant difference in the understanding of the post-school transition program in the academic field. Based on these results, it can be concluded that this mentoring program can improve respondents' understanding of the academic transition program material for children with disabilities.

Abstract

In education for children with autism spectrum disorders or ASD, appropriate learning methods are needed in order to develop their abilities and overcome difficulties due to their limitations. TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication-handicapped Children) is one of the effective methods used in intervention for children with autism spectrum disorders. This study aims to describe the application of the TEACCH method in the learning of students with autism spectrum disorders at the primary education level in special schools. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through case studies. Data was collected by observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles & Huberman model. The research findings show that the process of implementing TEACCH in special schools goes through the stages of planning, implementation and evaluation. Planning includes: building a teacher's mindset, providing education to educators, forming an acceleration team (program coordinator, curriculum coordinator, and teachers), creating a support system and continuous evaluation. The implementation of TEACCH is shown from its structured teaching activities, namely: clear and coherent activities through a work system, clear and predictable activities through the use of activity schedules, structuring the physical structure of the learning environment, and the use of visual aids. Evaluation was conducted to assess the development of student learning outcomes and teacher performance in teaching.

Abstract

Children with special needs often face complex challenges beyond their primary disability. These challenges can significantly impact their overall well-being and academic performance. This study aimed to assess the provision of guidance and counseling services for ABK in inclusive primary schools in Surakarta, Indonesia. A survey involving 10 inclusive primary schools was conducted, utilizing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents. Data analysis employed descriptive analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings indicate that while most inclusive primary schools in Surakarta offer guidance and counseling services, these services are often limited by factors such as a lack of specialized personnel, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient time allocation. Additionally, the integration of guidance and counseling services into classroom activities can be challenging due to diverse student needs. To enhance the effectiveness of guidance and counseling services for ABK, it is crucial to provide adequate training for teachers, allocate dedicated time and space for these services, and foster strong collaboration between schools, families, and community organizations.
