Abstract

Genetics has been identified in literature as one of the hard-to-learn biological concepts despite its importance to human existence. Therefore, there is the need for students to have deep conceptual understanding of the concept. The effectiveness of analogy on proper understanding of scientific concepts abound in literature, hence, this study examined the effects of analogy instructional strategy on senior school student s’ achievement in genetics. The study was quasi-experimental with a sample of 112 students purposively selected from two intact classes. Data gathered were analysed using ANCOVA. Findings from the study revealed that a significant difference existed in the achievement of students taught genetics with analogy and those taught using the conventional teaching approach in favour of the analogy group (F(1, 109) = 20.88, p<0.05). It was therefore, recommended that biology teachers should adopt the use of analogy instructional strategy in teaching genetics and other difficult concepts in biology. Key Words: analogy, score level, senior school students’, achievement, genetics.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i3.202211

Abstract

Technology has been in active use for a long time particularly in higher educational institutions. Mainly, technology provides various opportunities to enhance students’ performance to language learning. This present paper discusses the implementation and integration a technologyengagement teaching strategy with the aid of PowToon by focusing on students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. This study presents the teaching practices that occur through such an activity by applying Powtoon as a multimodal learning tool to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. In addition, in the second section of this paper, this paper presents the students’ attitude toward the teaching of reading through Powtoon. This paper concludes with comments about both the extent of Powtoon as a multimodal learning tool and about the future of teaching reading comprehension through technology in a multimodal world. Keywords: technology, language learning, PowToon. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v10.i3.202015

Abstract

The Impact of Education Setup Towards Teachers' Capability and Development Priority Objectives: This study used a mixed research design to assess the performances of the Senior High School Physical Education and Health teacher's capability and professional development priorities. Methods: The study used qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The survey data on teachers' capability and priority development needs were analyzed using simple statistics such as mean and standard deviation. Following quantitative data analysis, qualitative data collection involved transcribing and analyzing the data. Findings: Teachers demonstrated a strong capability in assessment and reporting and plus factors. The identified priority development needs were in content knowledge and pedagogy, learning environment and diversity of learners, assessment and reporting, and plus factors. Besides, facilitating learning, insufficient training, and low standards for addressing students' specific needs. It negatively impacts teachers' confidence, increasing job frustration and affecting their teaching performance. Conclusion: The new education setup challenges teachers' capability and increases the need for development due to limited knowledge and skills. The results reveal the necessity for practical, appropriate, relevant, and timely training tailored to the student's context to ensure effective instructional delivery. Keywords: capability, content knowledge and pedagogy, learning environment and diversity of learners, curriculum and planning, assessment and reporting, and plus, priority development, self-assessmentDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i3.202308

Abstract

How Elementary School Teachers Assess Students’ Affective Domain in the Classroom during Distance Learning?: A Phenomenological Study Objectives: This study aims to describe how elementary school teachers assess students' affectiveness, especially in social studies learning during distance learning. Methods: This research is phenomenology study, data collection techniques using interviews and document studies. Subject 5 elementary school teacher participants. The data analysis technique uses qualitative data analysis. Findings: The teacher conducts an affective assessment during social studies learning on student behavior, there still a problem, the teacher cannot monitor students directly so that the affective assessment in learning cannot be carried out optimally. However, affective assessment provides the benefit that the teacher can direct good attitudes and character to students. Conclusion: Cooperation of various parties to maximize affective assessment in the social studies learning process in the distance learning period. Keywords: affective assessment, social studies, elementary school teachers, distance learning. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i2.202224

Abstract

Students` motivation on the use of technology and its relationship with their receptive skills. Objective: to explain the link between English learners' motivation to use technology and their receptive (reading and listening) skills. Method: a correlation study was employed with 56 participants including freshman, sophomore, and junior students at Universitas Baturaja as selected through convenient sampling method. To gather the data, motivation questionnaire, reading test, and listening test were distributed and the instruments were valid and reliable. Result: students` motivation on the use of technology in learning significantly had a moderate correlation with their receptive skills (reading and listening). Conclusion: It can be derived that the EFL learners had high motivation for learning English by using technology and its relationship on their receptive skills was in a good category. Keywords: motivation, receptive skills, technology.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i3.202320

Abstract

Development of PBL-Integrated Augmented Reality Media to Improve Mutual Cooperation and National Ideology Education Learning Outcome for Fifth-Grade Students. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop Augmented Reality media with a Problem Based Learning model to improve the dimensions of mutual cooperation and learning outcomes of fifth grade students at SDN Pandansari 01, Batang Regency, in national ideology education, specifically the material on mutual cooperation in the surrounding environment. Methods: This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Borg & Gall model for development, which consists of eight stages, namely 1) Potential and problems; 2) Data collection; 3) Product desain validation; 4)Product design validation; 5) Design revision; 6) Product testing; 7) Product revision; 8) Usage testing. Findings: The learning device developed in the form of AR-based flashcards containing examples of mutual cooperation application in the surrounding environment. Evaluation by subject matter experts yielded a a score of 85.4 while media experts scored. 90.2 indicating that the material and media validation results fall into the highly suitable category. Testing was conducted on 31 fifth grade elementary school students, showing a significant increase in the mutual cooperation dimension and students learning outcomes. Statistical analysis based on the t-test showed a result of 0,001, indicating significant effect on the pretest and posttest result. The n-Gain test was 0,71, indicating a high category. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that AR-based learning media with PBL model is effective in improve learning outcomes and the application of mutual cooperation in national ideology education. Keywords: augmented reality, mutual cooperation dimension, learning outcomes, national ideology education.
