Abstract

The digital divide between the younger and older generations has become an important issue in social communication in the digital era. This study investigates the differences in understanding and use of digital technology between generation Z, generation Y, and generation X/Baby Boomers in Bandung City. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with case studies, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and surveys of 90 respondents. The results showed that the younger generations (Z and Y) have higher digital skills, especially in the use of social media and instant messaging applications, while generation X and Baby Boomers still rely more on face-to-face communication and telephone. This digital divide creates barriers in intergenerational communication, causes social isolation among the older generation, and limits their participation in wider social spaces. These findings suggest that interventions such as digital literacy training and the creation of inclusive spaces for intergenerational collaboration can reduce the digital divide and improve social communication. This study provides important insights into how the digital divide affects intergenerational relationships in Bandung City and suggests strategic steps to reduce the gap through education and technology empowerment programs.

Abstract

The linguistic diversity in Bintuni Bay, West Papua, reflects the cultural richness of its people. This study identified seven languages spoken by various ethnic communities in the region. Muna is the most widely spoken language and has a "Safe" status, while languages such as Biak, Serui, Yapen, Numfor, and Moskona are experiencing a decline in the number of speakers, especially among the younger generation, and are facing the threat of extinction. Local languages in Bintuni Bay play an important role in maintaining cultural identity, as a symbol of cultural strength, and a link with ancestors. Through in-depth interviews with local communities, it was found that local languages not only function as a means of communication, but also as a means to convey cultural values and traditions in traditional ceremonies. However, a number of factors influence the use of local languages, including the influence of Indonesian language education, mass media, and globalization which introduces Indonesian and foreign languages as dominant languages in everyday life. Socio-economic changes, as well as migration and community movement, have also accelerated language shifts. This study emphasizes the importance of preserving local languages to maintain the continuity of the culture and identity of the Bintuni Bay community. The recommendations proposed include strengthening local language preservation policies, increasing the role of the younger generation in learning and using local languages, and raising public awareness of the importance of language as a cultural heritage that must be preserved.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of Sundanese dialect use in Bandung City, especially among the younger generation, which has shown a significant decline in recent decades. Globalization, modernization, and the dominance of Indonesian and foreign languages, such as English, are the main causes of this shift. The younger generation more often uses languages that are considered practical and relevant for social and professional life. Nevertheless, various efforts to preserve the Sundanese dialect have been carried out, including through language classes in schools, cultural communities, and language festivals. The participation of the younger generation in these programs shows the potential for success, especially if packaged interactively and based on culture. The role of social media is also key in preserving the Sundanese dialect. Through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, creative content such as memes and short videos help reintroduce the Sundanese dialect in a modern context. The results of this study indicate the need for collaboration between educational institutions, cultural communities, and technology to ensure the sustainability of the Sundanese dialect. An innovative approach is expected to increase awareness and involvement of the younger generation in preserving their cultural identity.

Abstract

The development of technology and social media has opened up new opportunities in developing the potential of adolescents, especially for those with introverted personalities. This study examines the role of the TikTok platform in facilitating the self-development of introverted adolescents through the creation of creative content. The main focus of the study is to analyze how TikTok's unique characteristics can support self-expression and the development of social skills in introverted adolescents, while considering the potential risks and challenges that may be faced. Through a qualitative approach with a literature study method, this study analyzed various academic sources published in the last five years, including scientific journals, research articles, and study reports related to introversion, the influence of social media on adolescent psychology, and the impact and benefits of TikTok as a medium for creative expression. Data were collected from leading academic databases and analyzed thematically to identify key patterns and themes in the existing literature. The results of the study revealed several significant findings. First, TikTok has a positive contribution to the development of adolescent creativity, with an influence of 43.2% on the creative abilities of Generation Z. Second, this platform provides a more comfortable space for introverted adolescents to express themselves and interact socially virtually. However, a negative correlation was also found between the intensity of TikTok use and the level of adolescent self-confidence, indicating the need for a balanced approach in the use of this platform.

Abstract

Teluk Bintuni Regency, located in West Papua, offers significant natural and cultural tourism potential, yet its tourism promotion remains underdeveloped. This study explores the potential of broadcasting technology, particularly digital platforms, in enhancing tourism promotion in the region. Using a qualitative research approach, the study employed literature reviews, field observations, in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, and digital content analysis. The findings reveal that social media platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook play a crucial role in promoting the area's natural beauty and cultural heritage. However, challenges such as limited internet access, inadequate infrastructure, and low digital literacy hinder the effective utilization of broadcasting technology. Based on these findings, several strategic recommendations are proposed, including the development of digital infrastructure, digital literacy training for local communities, collaboration with social media platforms, and the creation of engaging video content that highlights both the natural and cultural assets of Bintuni Bay. By overcoming these challenges, the region can leverage broadcasting technology to attract more tourists, stimulate economic growth, and create a sustainable tourism industry. This study offers valuable insights for Teluk Bintuni and similar regions in Indonesia to harness modern technology in promoting tourism while preserving local cultural heritage.

Abstract

Audio accessibility in broadcasting is becoming increasingly important as technology advances and the need for inclusive services for people with disabilities increases. This study aims to analyze the implementation and key challenges in the adoption of four major audio accessibility technologies, namely Object-Based Audio (MPEG-H), AI-based dialogue enhancement (Dialog+), Auracast™ public broadcasting, and Smart TV interfaces with Text-to-Speech (TTS). The method used is secondary data analysis from various literature reports and international institutions, focusing on five countries: Germany, Japan, the United States, Indonesia, and Thailand. The results show that developed countries have implemented all four technologies comprehensively, while developing countries still face significant adoption gaps. The main barriers identified include device compatibility, high device prices, lack of user education, unprepared infrastructure, and limited local regulations. The findings emphasize that the successful implementation of audio accessibility technologies depends not only on technical readiness, but also on policy support, public-private partnerships, and public awareness. The comprehensive integration of MPEG-H, Dialog+, Auracast™, and TTS forms an inclusive broadcast ecosystem that can have a real impact on vulnerable groups. The study recommends a holistic approach to accelerate adoption and bridge the accessibility gap across countries.

Abstract

In the digital age, communication has become increasingly shaped by algorithmic systems that structure interaction, visibility, and persuasion across online platforms. This literature review explores the convergence of digital rhetoric and algorithmic ethics to understand how meaning-making and moral agency are co-constructed in contemporary digital environments. Digital rhetoric, concerned with how persuasion operates in multimodal and interactive contexts, now intersects with algorithmic processes that govern content distribution and user engagement. Simultaneously, the rise of algorithmic ethics addresses the sociotechnical implications of bias, opacity, and accountability embedded in machine-driven communication infrastructures. Through a qualitative synthesis of recent scholarship, this study identifies four core themes: algorithmic persuasion, content visibility and bias, platform governance, and ethical resistance. The findings show that algorithms are no longer neutral tools but rhetorical actors that influence how narratives are constructed and circulated. Moreover, the literature highlights growing concerns about fairness, transparency, and user autonomy, especially in the realms of political discourse, media consumption, and educational technologies. The study concludes that navigating digital communication today demands both rhetorical literacy and ethical sensitivity. A deeper understanding of how algorithmic systems persuade, exclude, or amplify certain voices is vital for promoting equitable and informed public discourse. This review contributes to a critical framework that connects digital rhetoric and algorithmic ethics, offering insights into the rhetorical and moral complexities of our algorithmically mediated world.

Abstract

Digital transformation has fundamentally changed television broadcasting management in Southeast Asia. This study examines two countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, which are at different stages of digital adoption. A qualitative research method with a case study approach is used, combining an international literature review, policy documents, and semi-structured interviews with broadcast practitioners. Thematic and comparative analysis, framed by the Dynamic Capabilities Framework, uncovers three main aspects: (1) organizational restructuring and multi-platform strategies; (2) technology adoption including DVB-T2 infrastructure, IP-based production systems, and AI for content recommendation; and (3) business model innovation through digital revenue diversification (YouTube, programmatic advertising, and OTT). The results show that Malaysia benefits from centralized policies and early infrastructure readiness, while Indonesia still faces challenges of decoder ownership, regional digital divide, and legacy-new system integration. Both countries emphasize the importance of human resource training, public-private collaboration, and incentive policies to accelerate digital adoption. Recommendations for the study include strengthening dynamic organizational capabilities, funding innovation, and digital literacy programs for the community. These findings provide strategic guidance for stakeholders to optimize broadcasting management in the digital era, towards an inclusive, adaptive, and sustainable ecosystem.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of language form and function in digital communication, focusing on platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and Kaskus. Through a qualitative-descriptive approach and multimodal analysis of 2,000 digital entries, it was found that digital communication forms a new language genre that is hybrid, visual, and performative. Phenomena such as code-mixing, acronyms, phonetic spelling, and the use of emoticons and memes reflect linguistic adaptations to the speed, efficiency, and emotional expression that characterize digital platforms. The findings show linguistic variation between generations: Gen Z tends to use visual symbols and concise language, while older generations (Millennials and Gen X) maintain a more formal sentence structure. Data visualization using NVivo and Voyant Tools strengthens the identification of dominant themes such as emotion, irony, and community slang. These findings support previous literature, such as Barrot (2022) and Kurmanbekova et al. (2023), which highlight the simplification and diversification of language in the digital era. This study confirms that social media is not only a space for linguistic expression, but also an arena for innovation, the spread of digital dialects, and shifts in communication norms. While bringing creativity and cultural engagement, these changes also raise concerns about the decline in formal literacy skills. Therefore, this study recommends further exploration of the long-term impact of digital language use on literacy education and culture.
