Abstract

This research focuses on the development of an online learning support to help students learn French, particularly listening skills, for students in the second-semester course of Français Oral Élémentaire at Universitas Negeri Semarang. This study aims to (1) provide the needs of beginning students in order to develop and learn French, especially listening skills, more easily, (2) design e-learning materials that are in line with the characteristics and needs of beginning students. The method used in this research is Sugiyono’s level 1 research and development. This research is an analysis of student needs, obtained through questionnaires distributed to second-semester students at Universitas Negeri Semarang. The questionnaire data is then used as website content. The score obtained in the data validation test for the website creation is 60%, indicating it is feasible. After the researcher's revision, the final score is 80%, indicating that it is entirely feasible. We can therefore say that the research carried out by the researchers is fully feasible and ready for use.

Abstract

Using interesting learning media can increase students’ interest in learning about differences in intercultural understanding. Comics are an interesting learning medium because they have 2 interdependent aspects: images and language. In language learning, the use of comics is considered efficient because it can double vocabulary gains and can also arouse students’ interest in learning foreign languages (Johana & Ari, 2017). The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of local wisdom that appear in comics, through pictures or sentences, and to describe the interpretation of local wisdom based on Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic interpretation theory. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method with Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics to analyze the symbols and meanings of the comics “Bienvenue Chez Nous !” and “Voilà Notre Tradition”. The results show that these comics present 21 local wisdoms from Central Java, organized into 11 forms and illustrated with pictures and sentences.

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country rich in ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity. Semarang City, located in Central Java, reflects this richness through its unique blend of Javanese, Chinese, and Dutch cultural influences. While Semarang holds strong potential in cultural and historical tourism, its promotion remains limited, especially among French-speaking tourists. According to 2023 data from the Semarang Department of Culture and Tourism, the number of francophone visitors is still low compared to those from the Netherlands and China. One of the main challenges identified is the lack of promotional media for tourism in French. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method to develop a bilingual (French Indonesian) tourism promotional video. The product is designed to meet the information needs of French-speaking tourists and enhance Semarang’s appeal as a cultural and historical destination. The conclusion of this research highlights the importance of bilingual promotional videos to effectively attract and inform francophone tourists.

Abstract

Among the four language skills, oral expression is one of the most difficult to master. The students of class XI-E face difficulties in pronouncing words in French and do not yet possess sufficient vocabulary to express themselves properly. This is evident when they are unable to answer the teacher’s questions during the lesson. The cooperative learning model Snowball Throwing is considered appropriate for meeting oral expression needs in this class. This research aims to describe the implementation of this model in French language teaching, particularly to develop students’ oral competence in class XI-E at SMA Sedes Sapientiae. It is a descriptive qualitative study, using the Miles and Huberman analysis model. The data were collected from an oral expression test administered after the model was applied. The results show that 10 students (about 53%) reached the mastery criterion, while 9 students (about 47%) did not. The study includes 12 steps in a single application session. These results indicate that the Snowball Throwing model has a positive impact on improving oral production in French, although further support or adaptation is still needed to optimize the results at the class level.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of using the playful application Drops to enrich students in class XI 2/Soshum’s French vocabulary in class at SMAN 7 Binjai High School. The research uses a quantitative, quasi-experimental design, namely the One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Data collection instruments include a pre-test, post-test, observations, and questionnaires. 30 students from class XI 2/Soshum SMAN 7 Binjai for the 2024/2025 school year were selected using a purposive sampling method for the research topics. The results showed that after using the Drops game app, students’ average grades increased significantly. The average score before the test is 46, and after the test, it is 84.6. To improve mastery of vocabulary in the material “Se Présent: Salutation, les Chiffres, la Profession et le Sport, la Nationalité”, the use of the Drops app is rated “very effective” based on t-test results and N-Gain calculations. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Drops game app is an effective tool to help students learn more French vocabulary.

Abstract

Homonyms are defined as words with the same signifier, but different meanings. This research aims to analyze the types of homonymies in Maurice Carême’s poetry and determine which type is most frequent. The research focuses on the types of homonyms used in nineteen poems. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with primary data drawn from the poems in Maurice Carême’s book. According to the classification of Guechi and Saadani (2021), homonyms are divided into three types: heterographic homophones, homographic homophones, and heterophonic homographs. The analysis of 19 poems revealed 58 homonymous data, with the following details: 25 heterographic homophones (43.103%), 18 homographic homophones (31.034%), and 15 heterophonic homographs (25.862%). These results show that heterograph homophones are the most common type used by Maurice Carême. The use of homonyms in Carême’s poems demonstrates the richness of the language and creates plays on meaning that reinforce the poems’ aesthetic effect. This research also highlights the challenges French language learners face in understanding the meanings of homonyms in context.

Abstract

This study aims to develop “smart box” materials for learning French at the secondary level, and to determine the feasibility of the “smart box” materials developed. The research employs the research and development (R&D) method, using Robert Maribe Branch’s ADDIE model (2009). The research did not reach the stage of product effectiveness testing. The research stages began with information gathering and needs analysis through the distribution of questionnaires to students; design through the collection of learning materials and the manufacture of learning aids in accordance with the design; and validation of the intelligent toolbox with media and materials experts. The results of the validation test by media experts were 81.54%, and by material experts, 82%. Media validation results are included in the “very good” category. Abstract

he process of this research aims to describe and analyze the classifications of euphemisms found in three speeches of Gabriel Attal, namely the inaugural speech as Prime Minister (January 9, 2024), the general policy declaration at the National Assembly (January 30, 2024), and the handover speech (September 5, 2024). This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis based on Samoskaite’s (2011) classification of euphemisms. The research stages include data collection from official transcripts, identification of euphemistic expressions, classification into categories, and analysis of their frequency. The results show 66 euphemisms across six categories, with the political classification being the most dominant at 76% (51 cases), followed by criminal (9%), professional (8%), death (5%), and disease (2%). No sexual euphemisms were identified. These findings indicate that political euphemisms play a crucial role in Gabriel Attal’s discursive strategy to mitigate sensitive issues, maintain a positive public image, and foster persuasive, diplomatic communication.
