Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine the extent to which students' vocabulary mastery is related to the accuracy of their translation in the narrative text "The Legend of Roro Jonggrang" in Indonesian. The research was conducted using a quantitative research design with correlational methods. The data was obtained from a questionnaire which was created via Google Forms and distributed online via the WhatsApp application. With a significance value (p-value) of 0.000, which is less than the cutoff of 0.05, the results showed a significant link between vocabulary and translation accuracy. The findings of the study have a big impact on language instruction, especially when it comes to teaching English in Indonesia. Educators should prioritize vocabulary development to enhance students' translation skills and overall language proficiency.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the use of fable stories as a medium for beginner-level BIPA learning through literature studies. BIPA is the abbreviation from Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing or like Indonesian for Foreign Speakers. The method used is a descriptive-qualitative review of literature related to fable stories, language learning, and educational technology. The purpose of the study is to examine how fable stories can be used effectively as a medium for beginner-level BIPA learning. The results show that fable stories are effective in improving learners’ language skills and cultural understanding. However, challenges such as adaptation of teaching materials, language complexity, and limited teachers need attention. Digital technology and integration of fables into the curriculum can be innovative solutions. With simple narratives, interesting storylines, and universal moral messages, fables can improve language skills, such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while introducing Indonesian cultural values. In conclusion, fable stories have great potential to support BIPA learning, although further development is needed to overcome the existing challenges. Further in-depth research on the effectiveness of fable stories in the context of BIPA needs to be conducted to provide a stronger scientific basis for the development of this teaching method.

Abstract

The study focused on how project-based learning (PBL) is applied as a demonstrative learning method to foster the listening skills of second-year students of the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) in Universitas Negeri Gorontalo (UNG) for a real-world purpose. This qualitative case study explored the implementation of project-based learning (PBL) to develop listening skills among university students, utilizing classroom observations, student interactions, and document analysis for comprehensive insights. Thematic analysis of classroom observations and document analysis unveiled three significant themes: Critical Listening Competence; Active Engagement and Collaboration; Real-Life Context of Listening Skills The results show that students made considerable progress with their listening skills by utilizing real-world projects that emulate authentic communication situations. Collaborative activities provide opportunities for peer engagement and critical thinking, creating a supportive learning environment. The study also emphasizes that educators need to adapt teaching methods, incorporating technology, and provide a variety of listening resources to prepare students for the complexities of professional listening demands. To address these challenges, recommendations for improving the implementation of PBL, including additional educator’s training and the use of effective assessment tools, were made. In conclusion, the research shows how experiential learning can enhance students’ listening skills.

Abstract

Integrating Islamic values with 21st-century skills in EFL education is increasingly essential to address contemporary educational challenges. This study investigates EFL students' perceptions of combining these values and skills within Ma’had Aly institutions, which emphasize cultural and spiritual identity. The research aims to explore the perceived importance of Islamic values, the integration of 21st-century skills from an Islamic perspective, and strategies to harmonize these dimensions in achieving holistic educational goals. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, semi-structured interviews, and document reviews involving 15 purposively selected EFL students. Quantitative and qualitative analyses reveal that students prioritize Islamic values such as Talab al-Ilm (pursuit of knowledge), integrity, and ethics (72.7%). However, 54.5% expressed dissatisfaction with the current incorporation of 21st-century skills in their curriculum. Despite these limitations, over half of the participants reported working on developing these skills, and 63.6% acknowledged that integrating Islamic values with modern competencies significantly enhances their professional readiness and English proficiency. The study concludes that aligning Islamic values with 21st-century skills fosters a balanced educational paradigm addressing both spiritual and practical needs. Recommendations include strengthening mentorship, optimizing digital resource usage, and embedding Islamic principles into teaching practices to create inclusive, sustainable frameworks for future learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze linguistic politeness in the comment sections of the social media platform TikTok. TikTok, as one of the most popular social media platforms today, serves as a space for users to express themselves and interact directly through the comment feature on creators' video content. However, the anonymity and freedom within these comment sections often lead to various forms of language use, including those that violate politeness principles. This research seeks to explore how TikTok users either adhere to or violate the principles of linguistic politeness in their comments. The findings reveal that while polite language and respect for others' opinions are still widely observed, numerous comments exhibit violations of politeness, such as the use of harsh words, derogatory remarks, insults, and sarcasm. Although politeness in language can still be found, the greatest challenge in maintaining ethical communication on social media lies in the high level of anonymity, which often triggers impolite and disrespectful language behavior. This study underscores the importance of digital literacy to raise awareness about the significance of politeness in communication.

Abstract

The present research aims to assess the influence of the communicative approach on the cognitive abilities and linguistic competence of students. This study utilized a quasi-experimental approach, specifically adopting a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample comprised 54 students in the tenth grade. The findings indicated a considerable improvement in the language proficiency of the students in the experimental group. The average score on the posttest increased by 18.7 points, from 60.2 to 78.9. The experimental group exhibited a substantial enhancement in their critical thinking abilities, with scores increasing from 51.38 to 83,04 in contrast to a lesser improvement shown in the control group. The data suggest that the communicative method is successful in strengthening students' language proficiency, as well as improving their critical thinking capabilities. Based on this study, it is recommended that the communicative approach be more extensively incorporated into the learning process. This would entail reinforcing teacher education, increasing infrastructure, and modifying the curriculum accordingly. The findings have significant use in formulating learning techniques in vocational schools, specifically in equipping students to confront workforce issues.

Abstract

This study explores the fulfilment of love and belonging needs in Elizabeth Bennet, the central character of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, using a psychological approach based on Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The research examines how Elizabeth navigates relationships, personal growth, and societal expectations to achieve emotional fulfilment. By analysing her interactions with family members, friends, and Mr. Darcy, the study highlights the challenges and resolutions that shape Elizabeth's journey. Misunderstandings, prejudices, and class differences initially hinder Elizabeth’s ability to feel love and belonging, but through mutual respect and emotional growth, these needs are ultimately fulfilled. This qualitative research uses descriptive analysis and intrinsic-extrinsic techniques to reveal the causes and effects of Elizabeth's emotional journey, emphasizing the importance of trust, mutual understanding, and personal growth in fulfilling psychological needs. The findings underscore the complexities of relationships and personal development in achieving love and belonging, offering insights into human behaviour and motivation as reflected in literature.
