Abstract

Learning autonomy means learners have to take responsibility in handing their own learning with the help and supervision guided by teachers. Then, selecting types of assessment techniques can be a way to create students’ learning autonomy during the instructional process. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine some techniques of English learning assessment that can foster students’ learning autonomy in online learning environment. Qualitative research was applied as research design done at English Education Department of the Institute for Islamic Studies of Padangsidimpuan. Ten lecturers of English Education Department were chosen purposively as respondents and interview was used as data collection technique. Then, the data were analyzed through qualitative data analysis in which the data were described and elaborated in detail ways. Related to findings, this study found some techniques of English learning assessment that regarded effective to improve students’ independence in online learning i.e. portfolio assessment, discussion and problem solving, essays and summary writing, online presentation, multimedia presentation, mini research, and recording performance task. Finally, this study concluded that there are many assessment techniques to foster students’ online learning autonomy and the promotion of learning autonomy becomes an important aspect to be included in online learning environment.

Abstract

This research is intended to investigate the effect of Running Dictations Game to Students Writing Skills at the Second Grade of MTs Mardhotillah Boarding Tapanuli Selatan. This research was designed with quantitative research with experimental method. The sample were VIII B as experimental class that consisted of 11 students and VIII C  as control class that consisted of 10 students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test in oral test type dictation directly that given by teacher and analyzed by using t-test formula. The finding showed that the mean score of experimental class was higher than the mean score of control class. After doing T-test, the researcher found that tcount ttable (6.49 2.093). Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It can be concluded that there was significant effect of using Running Dictations Game to Students Writing Skills at the Second Grade of MTs Mardhotillah Boarding Tapanuli Selatan.

Abstract

Abstract    The study investigates the use of non-digital gamification in junior high school English learning, involving seven graders in Jambi Province. The research used Classroom Action Research and two cycles of gamification. Results showed that students found the learning process more interesting and stimulating, with engagement levels significantly increasing. The implementation of each cycle resulted in a 22.5% overall increase in engagement.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the improvement of students’ speaking skill by using community language learning.  Classroom action research was used to conduct this research with 20 participants of students XII IPS-2 at SMA N 2 Siabu in Academic Year 2019/2020. The data were collected from speaking test, observation and interview in cycle one and cycle two. The indicators of students’ speaking skill are measured from accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. The result of this research showed that the improvement of mean score of the students’ speaking skill from cycle 1 into cycle 2 was categorized into very good category.

Abstract

This study discussed an important aspect in learning English, namely the vocabulary. The teachers must have an easy, practical and interesting way to teach the vocabulary. Animated videos are considered as the right medium and very useful for teaching. This research focused on the effective use of animated cartoon videos and increasing the use of animated videos in improving the students’ learning mastery at grade IIV of Mayang 01 Junior High School. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness and significance of the implementation or not using the technique itself. This research was quantitative. The method used in this research was by using test to collect instruments in collecting data. From the results of the research, it can be concluded that the students really like learning by using animated videos or cartoons. The respondents also are very positive about this media and students became more active in learning English. In conclusion, the use of video can be applied to all students.

Abstract

This research focused on the students’ inhibition in English-speaking. This research aimed to describe the inhibiting factors faced by the students of Year-10 of MA Khulafaur Rasyidin in speaking English and to identify the strategies used by the teacher to reduce the inhibition. The type of research was descriptive. The tools to collect the data were questionnaires, observation, and interviews. The findings from the questionnaire reveal that self-confidence was the dominant inhibiting factor of affective that caused the inhibition of the student. Meanwhile, the dominant factor of cognitive that caused the inhibition of the students was pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary together. The strategies used by the teacher were creating an anxiety-free and friendly environment, speaking slowly, giving appropriate feedback, using group work and discussion activities, encouraging the students to speak, reminding the students not to worry to make mistakes in speaking, and giving more opportunities for the students to speak.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether Blooket media is effective in teaching vocabulary and to discover about students' perceptions of the usage of Blooket media in teaching vocabulary. This research approach is quantitative with quasi-experimental as the design. Students are divided into two groups with 20 students in each group. In both pre- and post-test, data was collected using 20 multiple-choice questions. To know the student’s perception about the use of Blooket, 11 items of questionnaires was utilized. The research results showed that Blooket media is effective for increasing the students’ vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, students at experimental group were positively respond to the use of Blooket media.

Abstract

The researcher focuses the study on an analysis of Cohesion in short Story “The Gift of Magi”. The research is done through descriptive qualitative, in which the aims of the research are to describe the cohesion in short story, and then to determine the cohesion used dominantly in short story. Consequently, the researcher needs short story “The Gift of Magi” for primary data, and then some related Journals and books about Cohesion. Furthermore, the researcher uses content analysis method for analyzing the data. There the technique of analyzing the data; Reading the story, Analyzing cohesion in the story, and taking conclusion of overall discussion.

Abstract

Metode langsung atau direct method adalah metode yang tepat digunakan untuk pengajaran keahlian berbicara atau speaking. Seorang oengajar yang menggunakan metode ini menyajikan materi dengan langsung menggunakan bahasa asing atau bahasatarget sebagai bahasa pengantar dan tanpa menggunakan bahasa pertama dari peserta didiknya. Jika ada kata-kata yang tidak dapat dipahami oleh peserta didik maka guru dapat mengartikan dengan menggunakan alat peraga atau mendemonstrasikannya. Melalui metode ini, peserta didik dapat langsung melatih kemahiran mereka dalam berbicara bahasa inggris serta berkomunikasi dengan teman dan gurunya.

Abstract

This study is to explore the students’ motivation in learning English. The kind of the research is quantitative research. The writer presented 40 items of questionnaire. Population of this research were the students at the sixth semester of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan (112) and the samples were 28 respondents that is taken by simple random sampling technique. The research is done by online. The data were taken by Google-Form or questionnaires trough Whats-App Group. Based on calculating the data, it was found that the highest scores was 172 and the lowest score was 122 . The mean score was  147, the median score was 149.7857 and the mode was 153.9. Students who has high motivation were 14.2% and medium were 64.2% and the students’ motivation who has low motivation were 21.4%. It concludes that the students’ motivation in learning English were medium category.
