Abstract

In this research, the researcher concerned on translation study, that is the procedures employed by translator in translating speech video entitled how every child can thrive by five by Molly wright from English into Indonesian. The target from present study was catching up the translation procedures employed by translator. This study used to qualitative method to searched the objective of this study. Then, translation procedures types by Newmark were used by the researcher. The researcher involved herself in gathered data through several steps; watched the speech video, determining, allocating and identifying them entrenched the theory of translation procedures. The finding showed that there were fifth types; literal translation (37%), reduction (4%), deletion (2%), and transposition (41%). The most dominant translation procedure employed in the speech video was transposition.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out how captioning on Instagram improved students' ability to write descriptive texts. The subject of this research were the students of the 10th class of MAN 1 Sambas. The subject of this study was the English subject students of MIPA class with a total of 23 students. The data was collected by two sources of data, there were qualitative and quantitative data. The quantitative data was taken from the tests.  The qualitative data was taken from observation notes. Data analysis showed that students' descriptive writing skills improved with each cycle. Student Test-1 results gave an average score of 61.6 students succeeded (17.3%) and 19 students failed (82.7%). Then, in the second cycle, the average student score (78.5) improved. She had 18 students (78.3%) who passed one criterion, and her 5 students (11.7%) who failed. Based on the observation notes, students' activity of using captions and writing descriptions on Instagram was very good, and students were enthusiastic about using Instagram in writing descriptive text. In other words, based on the results of qualitative and quantitative data, improvement was seen in students, especially in writing descriptive texts.

Abstract

The primary aim is to enhance reading comprehension while simultaneously instilling Islamic moral and ethical values through the learning process. A qualitative descriptive method was employed using a case study approach involving students enrolled in the Basic Reading course.  Data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews and classroom observations. Thematic analysis was used to identify emerging patterns and themes from the data. The findings reveal that most students have a positive perception of Basic Reading materials infused with Islamic values. They found that the integrated content not only facilitated better reading comprehension but also provided meaningful insights into Islamic teachings applicable to daily life. This study concludes that students' positive perceptions indicate significant potential for implementing Islamic value-integrated teaching materials as an effective approach to teaching Basic Reading in Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

This research attempts to investigate the efficacy of using literary works as learning media in improving students' reading ability. This mixed-methods study involved grade IX students in a public junior high school in Gresik. Data were acquired by surveys for quantitative data utilizing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews for qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics whilst the qualitative data from interviews were thematically analyzed to investigate students' perspectives and experiences. Three categories were identified from the survey data: students' interest in reading, their interest in English, and their perceptions on the usage of literary works to enhance reading abilities. According to the findings, 47% of students "agree" that reading literature can help them become better readers. This study suggests that teachers can utilize literature in reading skills according to the level of age appropriateness and alignment with learning objectives

Abstract

Reputation is an identity that universities continue to strive for. In the digital era, social media is used to achieve this. This article's discussion includes a discourse analysis of how students at Universitas Negeri Semarang use language, along with an explanation of how their language performances and expressions on social media reflect their attitudes and manners. The findings of the study demonstrate that students' utterance or speech patterns vary based on the factors and objectives of their speeches. Adding more, it's said that students of Universitas Negeri Semarang have good language awareness. The methods for preserving the presence of positive student content through the development of language character are also included in this assessment.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out students' perceptions on reward toward their motivation in learning English. This research used qualitative research with descriptive method. The subjects of this study were students of class X IPA and The English teacher at MAS Ponpes NU Paringgonan Padang Lawas. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. The results of this study is from the five kinds of reward in English learning at MAS Ponpes NU Paringgonan Padang Lawas teacher often uses four types: Giving number or value, Giving gift, Rewarding/attention, and Praise but the most dominant one is Giving a number or value.

Abstract

The study aims to measure how well the textbook supports students in attaining pragmatic proficiency in context-dependent professional communication. Applying a descriptive qualitative research, the study analyzes samples of text in the textbook according to the five deixis categories: person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. The findings reveal that textbooks include diverse deictic expressions, but their pragmatic nature and context are not necessarily emphasized. Person deixis features prominently, as they are frequently used in business communication. However, other categories are still underrepresented, possibly limiting students from engaging with complex, hierarchical, and implicit relationships. These findings highlight the need for more pragmatically enriched material within ESP materials in order to better equip studentss for professional communication tasks.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between students' habits of listening to English songs and their vocabulary mastery. This research uses the quantitative method with a correlational research type. The sample of this study was 22 students of class XI MAN Tapanuli Selatan. Data were collected using questionnaires and tests and analyzed using the product moment test. The results of this study show that there is a correlation between the habit of listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery in the category with the value of rcount ˃ rtabel (0.442 ˃ 0.423). Therefore, the t-test shows that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected.

Abstract

This research analyzes Ridwan Kamil's inauguration speech on YouTube after his official nomination as governor of Jakarta through Halliday's transitivity process. This research employs a qualitative method, utilizing data collection techniques that include listening and recording. There are 71 data points were collected, and this study identified four processes: material, mental, relational, and verbal. The material process dominates with the discovery of 29 data points, and these results contain persuasive statements that depict the material process that can increase the effectiveness of persuasive statements in Speech.

Abstract

This study intends to analyze communicative strategies to respond to IELTS essay writing questions. It used a genre-based approach for the analysis, using 20 IELTS essay writing samples and receiving band seven. The results revealed that IELTS test takers in this study employed two communicative strategies to respond to questions: presenting introductory responses and responding to questions either explicitly or implicitly. However, while they used simple sentences more than the other sentence types in presenting introductory responses, they used more complex sentences to respond to the questions. Then, they tend to write these two communicative strategies in simple present tense forms. The implications of these findings are discussed in the discussion section.
