Abstract

Curriculum changes are crucial in modern education to adapt to society's needs and technological advancements. Yet, rushed or poorly considered alterations might disrupt education's flow and harm students' learning and progress. Hence, this study explores rural Junior High School English teachers' voices on curriculum changes and the Merdeka curriculum implementation regarding curriculum aspects. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, five English teachers from rural schools in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, were selected purposively. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to collect data and those data were analyzed using an interactive model. The findings of this study indicate teachers' positive reception to curriculum changes, benefiting both students and educators. The Merdeka Curriculum's implementation fulfilled various aspects, such as goals, resources, and teaching methods, yet encountered hurdles, like inadequate facilities, assessment system awareness, and learning module development. Despite successes, teachers expressed the necessity for training and workshops to effectively integrate the Merdeka curriculum into their teaching practices. In conclusion, rural English educators exhibit optimism toward the Merdeka Curriculum, appreciating its advantages while acknowledging challenges related to resource scarcity and the need for enhanced training in curriculum execution.

The visual form of documentation that is the source of data is the microteaching video of sixth semester students of the English Education Study Program at Mathla'ul Anwar University Banten one video for one academic year, start from the 2019/2020 academic year to the 2022/2023 academic year. The results showed that all data, namely Subject A1 to Subject D1, had both types of pauses based on Fromkin's theory, namely silent pauses and filled pauses. While there are only 3 out of 6 types of tongue slips based on Dardjowidjojo theory, there are anticipation, transposition, and perseveration. While there is no slip of the tongue for the types of blend, malapropism, and substitution. In this research, speech errors such as pauses and slips of the tongue were caused by fatigue, a focus on accents, not mastering the material or vocabulary, nervousness, rushed, and the habit of saying the words “eee” and “aaa”. Abstract

Generally, to finish a bachelor’s degree in Indonesia, undergraduate students are required to compose a research article as a form of academic writing. One of the distinctive features of academic writing is explicitness, which shows the connection between the texts by using conjunctions to help the reader understand how the various parts of the text are related and how well they understand the ideas being presented. This paper aimed to explore the conjunction usage in the research articles written by nine students from three higher educational institutions in West Borneo. Using a content analysis sheet, this qualitative research was done by interpreting the context of the conjunctions used in students’ research articles and evaluating their compatibility with each purpose of the conjunctions by adopting the misuse pattern of conjunctions theory. The research procedure consisted of coding each sentence that contained a conjunction, categorizing the conjunctions based on the types, analyzing the conjunction, and classifying the conjunctions found into two categories, which are appropriate and inappropriate. The findings showed that the most frequent conjunctions used by the students are “because they tend to add information in order to elaborate on the ideas of the sentences." The result shows that the students employed a range of conjunction types, encompassing coordinating, subordinating, correlative, and compound conjunctions. Nevertheless, in their thesis articles, students predominantly favored the use of coordinating conjunctions, with "and" emerging as the most frequently utilized conjunction. Regarding the appropriateness of conjunction usage in the articles, there are 34 conjunctions misused out of 737 conjunctions. However, it is considered appropriate since the conjunctions appropriately used are much more dominant than the misuse committed.
