Abstract

Since the beginning, the 2013 EFL curriculum has become a center for research in the field of language learning. This can be seen from pro and cons that surround during the implementation. At certain level, the 2013 EFL curriculum has reported facing various issues. These issues, especially, related to the use of predetermined syllabus and textbooks as the main models of learning, reduction in teaching hours, teaching approach, and the authentic assessment. Reflecting from these issues, this study tries to map the implementation of the curriculum in the classroom by appointing to Snyder et al. (1992) approach models. It is conducted by noticing Fullan’s (2007) curriculum implementation factors. The study employs a sequential exploratory method involving twenty-one EFL teachers from five different senior high schools and two hundred-thirteen students. The study reveals that there are two models of approach that are most often applied by EFL teachers. These are mutual-adaptive and fidelity approach model. Eventually, the factors that emerge need to be taken into consideration by policy makers as evaluation material for further language curriculum development.

Abstract

Students’ anxiety can impact the learning process. Anxiety causes students to overthink and focus on the negative, such as the fear of failing, getting lost in thought about a topic, or being laughed at or ashamed by others because of a mistake. Feeling anxious makes students not know what to say while they speak in front of the class. They forget all of the words they already know, which causes them to become stuck in the middle of the presentation, and, as a result, the presentation will not run smoothly. Students will be frustrated, ashamed, hopeless, and defeated as a result of this situation. Additionally, the students are unable to achieve the anticipated learning goal. If anxiety always occurs when learning a foreign language, especially in English presentation classes, it will certainly be a very serious problem for students. As a result, it is critical to investigate, and the goal of this study is to: (1) learn about the anxiety levels experienced by postgraduate students of the English Education study program in Bengkulu. (2) reveal what factors significantly influence students' anxiety level in class presentations, and (3) reveal the methods that first-semester students of Bengkulu University's postgraduate program in English education use to reduce their anxiety. The subjects of this research were the 21 students of the first semester of the postgraduate English program at Bengkulu University, and to fulfil these research objectives, the descriptive qualitative research design was utilized in this study. In this study, the researchers collected data using instruments such as a questionnaire and an interview. After conducting the research, the results revealed that most students are at an "anxious" level, and the researchers found that there are three main factors that significantly influence their anxiety. They are communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of evaluation, and in order to overcome their anxiety, students have their own ways, such as being well prepared and practicing as much as possible, not overthinking, holding something, doing physical movements, and relaxing.

Abstract

Metaphor is a part of human cognition that plays an important role in human knowledge and experience. This study aims at examining novel metaphors based on the metaphorical language used by Indonesia’s state leader, President Joko Widodo, in his speeches on COVID-19 and their functions for pandemic handling and post-pandemic preparednessin Indonesia. Data were speeches produced during the first and second waves of the pandemic and taken from official website of Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia. The metaphors identified in the speeches were analysed using Critical Metaphor Analysis proposed by Charteris-Black (2004, 2011, 2021). The identified novel metaphors were categorized under the following seven source domains: breakfast, computer, crater, test, teacher, momentum, wheel, and fire. The identified metaphors could be classified into three types of novel metaphor: linguistic structural metaphors, metaphors with new target domains, and new mapping metaphors. Results of analysis revealed that the metaphors of examination/test, teacher, and fire were high in frequency. As for the function, those novel metaphors could be interpreted as  Jokowi's way to reflect changing realities and motivate actions. Overall, the use of metaphors implied Jokowi's priority responses toward pandemic, i.e. to persuade the importance of solidarity and collectivity, strong sense of perseverance and resilience, as well as mutual cooperation. This study is expected to give insight that government leadersemploy metaphors as appropriate to situational context as the metaphors they can be effective in shaping public opinion and winning public support for health measures and policymaking in time of crises.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the effect of personal photographs on students writingquantity of descriptive text. The population of this study was all the students of the secondyear of SMAN 8 Bengkulu in academic year 2006/2007 with the total number of 200 students. The sample of this research was taken by random sampling. By using the cluster-samplingtechnique, 80 students were taken as the samples. The samples divided into two groups, experimental and control group. The instrument employed in this study was writing tests. Thepre-test was conducted before giving treatments in order to know the degree of relevance ofboth groups. In the pre-test analysis, it was found that the t-count < t-table (0,12 < 2,000) forthe analysis amount of words and t-count < t-table (0,26 < 2,000) for the analysis amount ofsentences. It means that there were no significant difference between the two groups scores. Therefore, the two groups can be accepted as the samples of this study. After giving sometreatments to the experimental group, the post-test was held to the both groups. Based on thedata analysis of the post-test, it was found that t-count > t-table (3,76 > 2,000) for theanalysis amount of words and t-count > t-table (4,1 > 2,000) for the analysis amount ofsentences. This finding indicated that there was a significant difference between theexperimental and control group scores. It means that students’ personal photographs had asignificant effect on their writing quantity. In the other words, the use of personal photographscould increase students’ writing quantity especially in descriptive text. Therefore, thistechnique can be applied by teacher as a teaching aid in descriptive text’s writing

Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis is an approach to studying a text to increase the reader's awareness of the meaning behind and the real purpose of the text. Previous studies analyzed texts with a general CDA approach, while this research focuses on a specific topic, namely women and racism. Using Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional critical discourse analysis theory and Van Dijk's sociocognitive approach, this study aims to analyze the types and uses of women's issues and racism, as well as the personal and impersonal motivations behind Kamala Harris' speeches. A total of three speeches and their scripts were selected and categorized based on the indicators of women's issues and racism. This study revealed five types and use of racism issues for women of colour that Kamala Harris raised in her speeches, namely women of colour in the economy, education, civil and society, justice, and health care. Her motivation was a call to take action against women of colour's injustice.
