Abstract

This paper seeks to explore the undergraduates’ experiences when reading journal articles as references for their thesis composition through a narrative inquiry. Four undergraduates of English Language Education program at UIN Mataram were interviewed to analyze  what they encountered when reading such genre. The findings suggest that their experiences mostly circulated around their motivation and challenges, therefore the narratives were focused on these facets. In terms of motivation, these students seemed to be strongly driven by controlled motivation that entailed the need for a model, accessibility and currency, as well as demands from supervisors and institutions. Furthermore, these students also encountered challenges in terms of unfamiliar academic technical terms and vocabulary, boredom due to text complexities, and failed reading strategies. These findings imply the need of scaffolding the reading of journal articles for undergraduates in their final year of study.

This study aim to investigate whether gender differences influence demotivating factors of EFL Learners of Indonesian Undergraduate Student during pandemic covid-19 situation Surveys design was utilized to verify the hypothesis in this research. On the basis of Kikuchi’s (in press) qualitative study, this study employed 34-item questionnaire that consist of five categories;((a) Course Books, (b) Inadequate School Facilities, (c) Test Scores, (d) Noncommunicative Methods, and (e) Teachers’ Competence and Teaching Styles) to gather quantitative data. Having cluster random sampling as sampling technique, the participants were 368 EFL Learners of Indonesian Undergraduate Student from private universities in Jakarta. The findings of the research revealed that gender did not influence demotivation factors on online learning during pandemic situation. However, the finding indicated the absence of face-to-face teacher in online learning significantly influence demotivating factors on learning English, as non-communicative approach and teacher performance being the most cited factors. Additionally, the result of the study can be the basis of further research on demotivating factors in learning English.

Abstract

This study investigates how Problem-Based Learning (PBL) can be applied to develop more effective English speaking and writing materials for students in Islamic higher education in Indonesia. Current teaching resources are often generic and heavily focused on grammar, offering little relevance to students’ academic disciplines or religious backgrounds. As a result, learners struggle to connect what they study in the classroom with their real-life academic and spiritual contexts. Drawing on qualitative data from two institutions (UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu and IAIN Curup), this research includes classroom observations, document analysis, and interviews with lecturers and department heads. The findings reveal that English materials in these programs often lack contextual relevance, fail to incorporate Islamic values, and are not supported by coherent curriculum planning. Additionally, many lecturers lack formal training in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), particularly in faith-based education. The study highlights the potential of a PBL approach, when thoughtfully adapted, to improve student engagement, foster communicative competence, and bridge the gap between English instruction and students’ academic and spiritual needs. Importantly, this study represents the initial Analysis phase of the ADDIE instructional design framework, laying the groundwork for future development, implementation, and evaluation of PBL-based English materials tailored to Islamic higher education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the language used by Kompas, focusing on the expression of attitude. The appraisal framework developed by Martin and White (2005) is used as an analytical linguistics tool to investigate aspects of attitude—affect, judgment, and appreciation—to identify the ideological position through a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of four online texts about the Free Nutrition Meals Program (FNMP). This qualitative research employs a content analysis method to interpret attitude resources utilized in constructing news texts. The results of the study reveal that Kompas demonstrates a relatively balanced representation of both positive and negative attitudes (53.8% positive, 46.2% negative). This equilibrium between positive and negative attitude data indicates significant and contentious issues faced by the government, political observers, and the general public regarding the FNMP. These findings illustrate how news reporting by media outlets can reflect ideological orientations and influence public perceptions regarding FNMP. Additionally, this study provides practical insights that can be utilized by media content creators and journalists to craft messages that are more effective and tailored to the intended audience. When presenting news that includes positive and negative assessments, it is crucial to maintain "impartial" and "balance" in news delivery, in accordance with journalistic ethics. In the context of EFL, this study also has significant implications for enhancing students' discourse competence.
