Abstract

This study examines the problems of Arabic language learning encountered by eighth-grade students at MTs Taswirul Afkar Surabaya and explores teachers’ efforts to address these challenges. Arabic plays a crucial role in Islamic education; however, its learning process in non-native contexts often faces complex obstacles. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the problems of Arabic learning can be categorized into linguistic and non-linguistic aspects. Linguistically, students experience difficulties in mastering Arabic grammar (qawaid), developing speaking skills (kalam), and acquiring sufficient vocabulary (mufradat). Non-linguistic challenges include limited learning facilities, the predominance of conventional teaching methods, time constraints, and low learning motivation among some students. To overcome these issues, teachers implement several strategies, such as applying step-by-step grammar instruction, using language games (lu‘bah) to enhance speaking skills, assigning daily vocabulary memorization, and creatively utilizing simple and contextual learning media. The results indicate that these efforts contribute positively to increasing student engagement and improving learning outcomes. This study contributes theoretically to the development of Arabic language education by highlighting the interplay between linguistic and non-linguistic factors. Practically, it offers insights for teachers and policymakers to design more innovative, interactive, and motivational Arabic learning practices suited to the Indonesian madrasah context.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the variety of wazan sighat isim fā‘il tsulāthī mujarrad presented in the book Pengantar Belajar Mengajar Tashrif by KH. Abdul Basith and examine its pedagogical implications for Arabic morphology learning. The research addresses the phenomenon of limited understanding in many Islamic educational institutions that restrict isim fā‘il to a single pattern, despite the existence of broader variations in classical sharaf theory. This study employed a qualitative approach using library research design. Data were collected through documentation techniques by examining the primary text of KH. Abdul Basith’s book, supported by classical sharaf references and contemporary linguistic studies. The data were analyzed through classification, comparison, and interpretation of the identified wazan patterns based on classical morphological principles. The findings reveal that the book presents diverse wazan forms of isim fā‘il, such as فَاعِلٌ، فَعِلٌ، فَعِيْلٌ، فَعْلَانُ، أَفْعَلُ, and فَعَلٌ, which generally align with classical sharaf rules and reflect distinct semantic nuances such as permanence, intensity, and temporary states. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Arabic morphological richness and emphasize the importance of integrating structural and semantic dimensions in teaching sharaf. The study implies that Arabic learning materials should adopt a more comprehensive approach to wazan variation to enhance students’ conceptual mastery. Further research is recommended to explore the practical implementation of these patterns in classroom settings and their impact on students’ linguistic competence.

Abstract

‘Ramadhan (Arabic Version)’ to uncover the spiritual and connotative meanings hidden within them. Given that Arabic pop song lyrics are currently a popular means of intellectual communication among Gen Z, Michael Riffaterre's semiotic analysis, with its concepts of double reading, hypogram, matrix, and variant, was chosen as the methodological approach. This qualitative descriptive study used observation and note-taking techniques and literature study, with song lyrics as the main object. The results of the analysis show that heuristic (literal) reading produces separate denotative meanings, such as in the phrase فَالشّوقُ طَال (longing has been long). However, the presence of ungrammatical elements such as the personification of Ramadan as لِلرُّوحِ دَوَاء (‘medicine for the soul’) forces the reader towards the hermeneutic (retroactive) stage. Hermeneutic reading reveals the core Matrix of the lyrics, namely Longing for Ramadan, which is transformed through the Model of a call (munada) full of love ( يَا حَبِيب). Variants such as يَا نُورُ الْهِلاَلْ and يَا شَهرَ القُرآن serve to reinforce this Matrix. This song uses the hypogram of piety (QS. Al-Baqarah: 197) and ends with a prayer that reflects the resolution of the poetic tension between the desire for eternity and the transience of time. This study confirms the effectiveness of Riffaterre's model in exploring spiritual and symbolic values in contemporary Arabic music.

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of how moral messages are constructed and communicated in films that portray socio-political conflict within plural societies, particularly in contexts shaped by historical trauma and sectarian division. Focusing on Qadiyya Raqm 23 (The Insult), directed by Ziad Doueiri, the study aims to uncover the moral meanings embedded in the film and to explain how cinematic signs function as vehicles of ethical discourse. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, emphasizing the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. Key scenes, dialogues, and visual symbols are analyzed to identify patterns of meaning and ideological representation. The results reveal that the film represents personal conflict as a symbolic extension of collective memory, identity politics, and unresolved historical grievances in Lebanese society. At the denotative level, the narrative depicts a legal dispute between two individuals, while at the connotative level it exposes deep-seated emotions of humiliation, pride, and resentment. At the mythic level, the film constructs a broader moral discourse that critiques inherited hatred, sectarian prejudice, and social discrimination, while emphasizing human dignity, empathy, and the necessity of reconciliation. This study contributes to film and cultural studies by demonstrating the relevance of Barthesian semiotics in decoding moral narratives in Middle Eastern cinema. It also offers insight into how film can function as a reflective medium for promoting ethical awareness and social coexistence in plural and post-conflict societies.

Abstract

Previous studies using Vladimir Propp’s theory have largely concentrated on German and Indonesian folklore, leaving a significant research gap in the analysis of narrative structures and character roles within Arabic oral literature. This study aims to identify the 31 narrative functions and 7 character traits present in Yemeni folktale الملك و العرّاف. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method supported by library research to gather and process textual materials.. The result show that fourteen of Propp’s fourty-one narrative functions, spesifically α – Σ – γ – A – δ – D – T – Pr – Rs – H – W – Q – Q – W are present in the story. Only three of Propp’s seven-character categories appears in the narrative, namely the hero, villain, and helper. This research contributes to the field of Arabic narratology by providing a scientific record of Yemeni oral traditions and demonstrating that Propp’s structural patterns transcend cultural boundaries, thereby aiding in the preservation of Arab cultural heritage.

Abstract

In practice, many individuals still make errors when translating certain Arabic terms. These mistakes frequently occur in the translation of research-related terms, which often consist of two-word constructions. Such terms are commonly translated partially or word by word, resulting in inaccurate or misleading interpretations. Therefore, this study aims to develop a dictionary application of Arabic research terminology, particularly terms related to educational research. This application is named Alhidayah Dictionary. This study employs a Research and Development (R&D) methodology. The development model adopted in this research is the ADDIE model, developed by Reiser and Mollenda, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data collection techniques used in this study include documentation and questionnaires. The questionnaires were utilized to assess product feasibility and to gather user responses. The collected data were analyzed using percentage-based statistical analysis. Based on the validation results from expert reviewers, which were subsequently converted using a media feasibility interpretation criteria table, the developed Alhidayah Dictionary application obtained a feasibility percentage of 79%. This result indicates that the application falls into the category of highly feasible. However, one limitation of this dictionary application is the requirement to pay an annual domain fee in order to maintain its accessibility. It is therefore expected that future researchers will be able to develop a more efficient and up-to-date dictionary application.

Abstract

The development of instructional materials is an important endeavor and plays a significant role in ensuring the success of the teaching and learning process. The instructional materials found by the researcher in the prescribed textbook for teaching speaking skills to students of the Arabic Language Center at Darul Ulum Banyuanyar Islamic Institute, Pamekasan, are limited and do not accommodate students’ needs for oral practice according to their communicative situations, which would otherwise contribute to the development of their speaking ability. The textbook is confined to dialogues only and merely presents vocabulary scattered across each page. This condition may lead to students’ failure in learning speaking skills. This study aims to develop, produce, and evaluate instructional materials for speaking skills for students of the Arabic Language Center at Darul Ulum Banyuanyar Islamic Institute, Pamekasan, East Java, in order to improve their speaking and communication skills in accordance with their daily situations. The research approach employed is both quantitative and qualitative, using the Research and Development (R & D) methodology. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: (1) The procedures for developing instructional materials for speaking skills for students of the Arabic Language Center at Darul Ulum Banyuanyar, Pamekasan, include needs analysis, planning and design, material development, expert validation, revision and correction, field testing, and final revisions and corrections. (2) The newly developed instructional materials proved effective in improving students’ ability in oral expression in terms of Arabic pronunciation, fluency, and their ability to use vocabulary. This is evident from the comparison between the pre-test and post-test results, where the calculated t value (93.3) is greater than the t table value at the 99% significance level (2.83).

Abstract

The teacher is the leader of the teaching and learning process and has a significant influence on shaping learners’ behavior. Therefore, a teacher does not merely teach and deliver lessons, but also educates, guides, and supervises learners throughout the entire learning process. In order to carry out his or her duties and responsibilities, an Arabic language teacher must possess excellent linguistic competence and also have a deep understanding of various disciplines, so as to be able to influence learners cognitively, affectively, and behaviorally. Thus, the school must determine clear and well-planned objectives to facilitate all members in measuring and achieving these goals. Consequently, the development of planning and organization, whether in teaching or curriculum design, is a necessary requirement. In addition, the school should strengthen its role in enhancing the professional competence of other teachers. Coordination is known to play a central role, namely in developing the integration of teaching staff, improving their abilities and performance, developing the curriculum, and conducting research to improve the teaching process.

Abstract

As we know, the teaching of the Arabic language has spread throughout Indonesia, whether in formal or non-formal institutions, and whether in schools, institutes, or universities. However, unfortunately, Arabic language teaching in our country still suffers from various problems. One of these problems is the low motivation of students in the learning process. The author found this low level of motivation among students in both schools and universities. After analyzing the situation, the author found that the problem of students’ motivation is largely concentrated in four aspects: learning drive and needs, hopes and aspirations for the future, and the learning environment. The author then concluded that most students are weak in these four aspects. Therefore, the author attempted to propose an Arabic language teaching strategy using language games, as language games play an important role in stimulating and maintaining learners’ motivation.
