Abstract

This study was motivated by the limited maharah qira'ah (Arabic reading proficiency) of students in reading and comprehending kitab turats (classical Islamic texts), resulting from the complexity of classical Arabic and the predominance of teacher-centered instructional approaches. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the implementation of the Halaqah Musyawarah method in the learning of kitab turats and examine its contribution to improving students' maharah qira'ah at Madrasah Muallimin Hasyim Asy'ari Tebuireng Jombang. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The participants included the head of the Islamic boarding school, musyrif (learning supervisors), and students participating in the Halaqah Musyawarah program. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Halaqah Musyawarah method is systematically implemented through reading kitab turats, collaborative discussions, textual interpretation, grammatical analysis (nahwu and sharaf), scholarly deliberation, and continuous guidance from the musyrif. This student-centered and collaborative learning model significantly improves students' ability to read unvowelled Arabic texts fluently, comprehend classical Islamic texts accurately, analyze linguistic structures, and present academic arguments based on kitab turats. Its successful implementation is supported by competent musyrif, strong student motivation, a conducive Islamic boarding school environment, and the availability of classical Islamic texts as learning resources, although challenges remain in the varying levels of students' mastery of Arabic grammar, limited instructional time, and low self-confidence among some learners. This study contributes by proposing Halaqah Musyawarah as an effective collaborative learning model for enhancing maharah qira'ah while simultaneously strengthening critical thinking, linguistic analytical skills, and academic communication, thereby offering an alternative competency-oriented approach to the teaching of kitab turats and Arabic language education in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study aims to identify speech skills learning strategies, analyze the realization of stimulus, response, and reinforcement, and describe their contribution to improving speech skills. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with case studies. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with curriculum heads, teachers, and students, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model, with triangulation and peer discussion to guarantee validity. The results showed six integrated strategies: daily conversation, debate, drama, book circles, speeches after Asar, and poetry reading. Each strategy realizes three components of Skinner: stimulus (language commitment, team division, scripting, assignments, rewards); response (spontaneous use, research, argument, memorization, appearance); reinforcement (praise, correction, guidance, evaluation, rewards, peer feedback). Integrated implementation increases students' courage, fluency, confidence, and critical thinking. The theoretical implications reinforce the validity of Skinner's theory with three new findings: social reinforcement of peers is just as effective as extrinsic reinforcement of teachers; the total language environment serves as a continuous discriminatory stimulus; Variations in reinforcement schedules make behaviors more durable. In practical terms, the research offers a model of the integration of six strategies as a holistic learning system. Future research is recommended to conduct quantitative, inter-institutional, and longitudinal studies.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study investigates how Froggy Jump, an Educaplay-based game, was implemented to strengthen motivation in learning nahwu and sharf and how students’ motivation changed after its use at State Islamic Senior High School 4 Jombang. The study involved one Arabic teacher and 33 students of class X-H; two students were purposively selected as class representatives for interviews. Field data were collected in January 2026 through non-participant classroom observation, semi-structured interviews (students on 14 January and the teacher on 15 January), and documentation consisting of attendance records, teaching materials, lesson documents, and activity photographs. Data were analyzed through reduction and coding, thematic display, and conclusion drawing/verification, while credibility was checked through methodological triangulation. The study’s original contribution lies in adapting Froggy Jump—normally played individually—into group-based formative assessment using only one laptop and a projector in a device-limited nahwu–sharf classroom. The implementation comprised preparation of questions, teacher explanation, group competition, immediate feedback, and rewards. Before the intervention, the teacher described motivation as “very low,” while students characterized nahwu and sharf as “boring, difficult, and complicated.” After implementation, observation and interview evidence showed more focused listening, active discussion and answering, competitive persistence, enjoyment, greater effort to understand the material, and reduced boredom and drowsiness. These findings indicate that Froggy Jump functions not merely as entertainment, but as an external motivational stimulus and a formative reinforcement tool that increases engagement in rule-based Arabic learning

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at Taska Qalby An Nur Malaysia. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) serve as work guidelines that function to regulate operational activities in a systematic, consistent, and standardized manner, thereby improving the quality of services in early childhood education institutions. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The research was conducted at Taska Qalby An Nur Malaysia, located in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The research informants consisted of the institution's management and staff who are directly involved in the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within the taska. Data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model developed by Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at Taska Qalby An Nur Malaysia has been applied as a guideline for managing operational activities, particularly in financial management procedures. To enhance the effectiveness of the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), several strategic measures are required, including improving the dissemination and understanding of SOPs, providing training to enhance human resource competencies, strengthening the monitoring and evaluation system on a regular basis, ensuring the consistent implementation of regulations, and improving coordination between the taska management and all staff within the Foundation.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of spiritual longing (kerinduan) in the lyrics of the song Qolbi Fi Madinah by Maher Zain through Roland Barthes' semiotic framework of denotation, connotation, and myth. Religious songs increasingly function as media through which contemporary Muslim spirituality is symbolically expressed, particularly longing toward sacred spaces and the Prophet Muhammad. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, eight lyrical units were identified as primary data and analyzed through documentation and library research techniques. The findings indicate that at the denotative level, the lyrics literally express the heart's presence in Madinah, tears of longing, and direct address to the beloved. At the connotative level, these expressions are elaborated into emotional and spiritual meanings such as intense love (‘ishq), inner tranquility, and spiritual ascent. At the mythical level, the lyrics naturalize the belief that longing for Madinah and the Prophet constitutes an ideal form of piety, positioning sacred space as the ultimate locus of spiritual serenity. This study contributes to Arabic literature studies by demonstrating how popular religious songs construct religious ideology through poetic and symbolic language.

Abstract

The film Souad (2021) by Ayten Amin represents the complexity of young Egyptian women's lives caught between patriarchal cultural demands and the expansion of digital space. This study aims to describe the narrative structure of Souad through Algirdas Julien Greimas's narrative semiotic approach, encompassing the actantial scheme, functional structure, and spatial-temporal isotopy. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with documentation techniques based on repeated observation of the film, scene recording, and analysis grounded in Greimas's actantial model. The findings show that the film contains two interconnected actantial trajectories: that of Souad and that of Rabab. Souad functions as the subject seeking recognition, validation, and an ideal identity through social media, yet fails due to the pressure of the family's socio-religious norms and an unfulfilling virtual relationship. Rabab, by contrast, emerges as a new subject who continues the plot with the goal of uncovering the cause of her sister's death through a direct meeting with Ahmed. This subject shift constitutes the narrative's distinctive feature, departing from the conventional actantial pattern. Social media functions simultaneously as an adjuvant and as a space that produces identity conflict, while spatial and temporal isotopy reveals the tension between the protagonist's real and digital lives. The findings indicate that Souad critiques the limited space for women's expression within patriarchal society through a complex narrative structure.

Abstract

his study examines the construction of the myth of Bedouin honor in the film Theeb (2014) directed by Naji Abu Nowar using Roland Barthes' semiotic framework. Theeb was selected because it strongly represents Bedouin cultural values, particularly the concept of honor (sharaf), as the central theme of its narrative, yet has never been specifically studied through Barthesian semiotics with a focus on myth construction. This study aims to identify how the myth of Bedouin honor is constructed in the film and to reveal the naturalization mechanisms that make honor appear as a natural and self-evident cultural identity. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using close viewing technique on 35 data points comprising key dialogues and scenes, analyzed at three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that the myth of Bedouin honor in Theeb is constructed through four mutually reinforcing values: hospitality toward guests (diyafa), loyalty and brotherhood (wafa'), courage (shaja'a), and family reputation (sharaf al-nasab). This construction naturalizes honor through three main mechanisms: the ritualization of everyday actions, heroification without dramatization, and the essentialism of inheritance. Together, these mechanisms conceal the historical and ideological dimensions of honor, presenting it as an innate characteristic of Bedouin male identity rather than a cultural construction shaped by specific historical conditions. This study contributes to the field of Arab film semiotics and enriches understanding of how film not only represents culture but also actively constructs and naturalizes particular ideologies that shape perceptions of cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the values of struggle embodied by the character Shawisha in the novel Mudzakarati fi Sijn an-Nisā’ by Nawal El Saadawi using Wellek and Warren’s sociology of literature approach. The novel represents the social reality of women living within a repressive prison system in modern Egypt under Sadat's regime. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with textual content analysis of the novel, enabling an in-depth interpretation of Shawisha’s actions, attitudes, and moral choices. The findings revealed that Shawisha embodies several values of struggle, including moral courage, empathy, solidarity, integrity, and symbolic resistance within a patriarchal power structure. Her ambivalent position, as both an institutional rule enforcer and a victim of the patriarchal system, reflects the complexity of power relations and women's non-confrontational strategies to preserve their dignity through everyday ethical actions (everyday resistance). The primary contribution of this study lies in expanding Wellek and Warren’s sociology of the text by integrating feminist ethics of care and power relations theory. Conceptually, it shifts the paradigm from a binary view of oppression to an analysis of peripheral female agents (the enforcer) who navigate moral crises within oppressive state institutions, thereby offering a novel theoretical model for Arab feminist literary studies.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and semantic equivalence of Arabic iḍāfah constructions in Bidayat al-Hidayah by Sheikh Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazali, with reference to its Indonesian translation by KH. Ustadz Yahya Al-Mutamakkin. It aims to (1) identify the types of iḍāfah constructions based on Ibn Malik’s grammatical framework and (2) analyze their semantic equivalence using Eugene Nida’s translation theory. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical design, the study collected data through systematic reading, observation, and note-taking of iḍāfah constructions and their corresponding translations. Data were analyzed using the distributional method with immediate constituent analysis to determine the internal grammatical structure of the Arabic constructions, while the translational identity method was applied to evaluate semantic equivalence. The findings reveal that the iḍāfah constructions are predominantly iḍāfah maḥḍah (maʿnawiyyah), expressing the meanings of lām (possession), min (origin/material), and fī (location). In terms of translation, both formal and dynamic equivalence are identified; however, dynamic equivalence is more dominant, reflecting the translator’s effort to preserve communicative meaning and contextual readability while maintaining the theological message of the source text. The study’s novelty lies in integrating Ibn Malik’s classical Arabic grammatical theory with Eugene Nida’s modern translation framework to examine iḍāfah constructions within a single analytical model. This interdisciplinary perspective extends research at the intersection of Arabic linguistics and translation studies by demonstrating how grammatical structures influence semantic transfer. Practically, the findings provide a systematic framework for translating classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) into Indonesian with greater semantic accuracy and reduced distortion of religious concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the portrayal of Ja 'far's internal conflict in Naguib Mahfouz's novel Qalbu Al-Lail through a semiotic analysis guided by Charles Sanders Pierce's framework and supplemented by Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. Ja' far's conflict is manifested through dialogue, actions, and symbols that reflect his struggle between personal desires, moral values, personal convictions, and familial expectations during the process of identity formation. The research employs a qualitative descriptive methodology; data sources include the novel Qalbu Al-Lail, with specific materials comprising dialogue excerpts, character behaviors, narrative elements, and symbols related to Ja' far's inner conflicts. Data were collected via literature review, reading analysis, and note-taking techniques. Analysis was conducted using Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic model—including representation, object, and interpreter—and further enriched by Sigmund Freud's concepts of the id, ego, and superego. The research findings indicate that Ja 'far's inner conflict is portrayed as a tension between his desires, moral principles, and the realities of life, which gives rise to a crisis of identity. This study is expected to enrich the study of Arabic literature, particularly by integrating Pierce's semiotics with Freudian psychoanalytic theory to elucidate the meaning of the character's conflicts.
