Abstract

Listening comprehension (maharah istima’) is a fundamental skill in Arabic language learning, yet its mastery often becomes a challenge in pesantren environments that still rely heavily on conventional teaching methods. This study aims to explore the implementation of short video media as an innovative approach to enhance istima’ skills among students at Pesantren Teknologi Majapahit Mojokerto. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with both teachers and students. The findings reveal that the use of short video media positively influences students’ listening skills, particularly in improving pronunciation accuracy, intonation, and contextual understanding. In addition, the integration of short videos fosters greater enthusiasm, motivation, and active participation in the learning process, which are often lacking in traditional pedagogical practices. Despite these benefits, several challenges were identified, including limited technological infrastructure, students’ difficulties in comprehending non-standard Arabic dialects, and restricted vocabulary mastery. These limitations suggest the need for careful content selection, adequate facilities, and continuous teacher training to optimize the effectiveness of short video-based instruction. The contribution of this research lies in highlighting the pedagogical potential of short video media as a practical and adaptive tool for Arabic language learning in pesantren contexts, bridging traditional methods with contemporary technological innovations. Ultimately, this study underscores the importance of integrating media-based approaches to ensure that Arabic learning remains effective, contextual, and aligned with the demands of modern education.

Abstract

This study investigates the problem of low learning motivation among female students in studying tashrif lughawī (Arabic morphology), a foundational yet often challenging subject in Arabic language education. The research aims to examine the effectiveness of the Wordwall digital platform as an interactive tool to enhance learning motivation at the Cyber Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic Boarding School in Kediri, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative descriptive method, the study involved 22 female students who participated in eight instructional sessions integrating Wordwall-based quizzes and games. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on a four-point Likert scale, focusing on indicators of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The analysis applied the Total Respondent Achievement (TCR) technique to determine the level of motivation improvement. The findings revealed that the use of Wordwall significantly boosted students’ learning motivation, with an overall achievement rate of 77.35%, classified as “very good.” Both intrinsic aspects (such as increased interest, engagement, and self-confidence) and extrinsic factors (including peer competition and recognition) showed substantial improvement. These results indicate that Wordwall provides an engaging and competitive learning environment that supports the mastery of Arabic morphology. The study contributes to Arabic language pedagogy by demonstrating the potential of gamified digital platforms to address motivational challenges. It recommends broader integration of interactive educational technology in Arabic instruction, especially in pesantren contexts, to create learner-centered and technology-enriched classrooms.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of the scientific integration model at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, which seeks to eliminate the dichotomy between general science and Islamic science within the university's educational, research, and community service frameworks. The primary objective is to analyze both the conceptual and operational aspects of scientific integration through a qualitative-descriptive approach using literature study. Data were obtained from books, journal articles, research reports, and educational policy documents, particularly from the last decade, and were analyzed thematically. Findings reveal that UIN Malang applies a unique integration model symbolized by the "tree of knowledge," where Islamic sciences serve as the foundation and general sciences form the branches. This model is operationalized through an integrated curriculum, inductive-deductive teaching strategies, and institutional policies that position the Qur'an and Sunnah as epistemological sources for all disciplines. The study contributes theoretically to the discourse of integrative education and practically offers a replicable model for other Islamic higher education institutions aiming to produce graduates with both intellectual excellence and spiritual integrity rooted in moderate Islamic values.

Abstract

This study aims to examine violations of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in the story of Prophet Ibrahim based on QS. Al-Anbiya: 51–70, and to explore its relevance to contemporary da'wah strategies. The focus of the research is directed at prophetic dialogues involving Ibrahim that contain maxim violations—quantity, quality, relevance, and manner—not merely as linguistic deviations but as rhetorical strategies to convey the message of monotheism persuasively and contextually. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a pragmatic content analysis approach. Data were collected through documentation of Qur’anic verses containing dialogical narratives, particularly from Surah Al-Anbiya, and were analyzed based on the Cooperative Principle and Conversational Implicature theory developed by H. P. Grice. The findings reveal four key verses that strategically demonstrate maxim violations: QS 21:53 (relevance), QS 21:56 (quantity), QS 21:63 (quality), and QS 21:66 (manner). These violations do not hinder communication; rather, they serve as rhetorical devices to provoke the audience’s awareness of the irrationality of idol worship and the importance of monotheism. In conclusion, maxim violations in the story of Prophet Ibrahim reflect communicative wisdom in prophetic da'wah. This approach is relevant to modern da'wah contexts, as it shows that non-literal yet reflective and rhetorical communication strategies can enhance the effectiveness of Islamic preaching. This study offers a novel integration of pragmatic analysis and Qur’anic narrative interpretation, revealing how violations of the Cooperative Principle inform effective strategies for contemporary Islamic da'wah communication.

Abstract

Writing skill (maharah al-kitabah) is one of the essential competencies in Arabic language learning; however, many students still struggle to master it effectively. This study investigates the writing errors made by students of class VIII.3 at MTsN 2 Makassar, with the primary aim of identifying the types of errors and analyzing the underlying causes behind them. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with an error analysis framework, data were collected through writing tests and semi-structured interviews. The data were then analyzed using techniques of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the majority of students continue to encounter significant difficulties in maharah al-kitabah. The types of errors most frequently observed include: improper spacing between words, confusion between similar-looking Arabic letters, misuse of punctuation, incorrect application of tasydid, and the omission or addition of letters within words. Furthermore, the causes of these errors can be classified into internal and external factors. Internal factors consist of limited writing practice, lack of concentration, hurried writing, restricted reading habits, insufficient understanding of Arabic grammar, and a limited vocabulary range. Meanwhile, external factors are associated with the teaching methods used, the broader learning environment, and the influence of parental support. This study contributes to the field of Arabic language education by providing an in-depth understanding of the error patterns in students’ writing. It also emphasizes the need for more targeted instructional strategies, greater emphasis on writing practice, and supportive learning environments to improve maharah al-kitabah among learners.

Abstract

his study investigates Kahlil Gibran’s poem Ummi by applying Ferdinand de Saussure’s structuralist framework to explore its multifaceted portrayal of motherhood. The research problem arises from the limited scholarly attention to structuralist readings of modern Arabic poetry, particularly in revealing how linguistic and symbolic systems shape thematic depth. The study aims to examine how linguistic signs and natural symbols construct the maternal figure as both a universal and cultural archetype, and to assess the broader significance of structuralist analysis in modern literary studies. Methodologically, the research employs a descriptive-analytical approach within a qualitative paradigm. Through close reading and structural analysis, the study identifies the ways in which syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations, along with binary oppositions, contribute to the cohesion and resonance of the poem. The results demonstrate that key linguistic signs—such as the Arabic word أمي (“my mother”)—alongside natural images like the sun, earth, trees, and flowers, function as semiotic units that elevate the mother beyond her biological role. These symbols present her as an embodiment of affection, resilience, and protection, while binary oppositions such as strength versus weakness and hope versus despair enhance the poem’s philosophical dimensions. The study contributes to literary scholarship by showing that structuralist analysis not only uncovers the symbolic depth of Gibran’s poetry but also situates motherhood as a cultural and cosmic principle. Ultimately, this research reinforces the continued relevance of Saussurean theory in interpreting Arabic literature and enriches critical perspectives on Gibran’s poetic vision.

Abstract

his research investigates the contribution of lexicographers in the development of Arabic-Arabic dictionaries through significant classical works. The main problem addressed is the lack of comprehensive studies that highlight the role of lexicographers in shaping the structure, methodology, and sustainability of Arabic lexicography. The purpose of this study is to examine how their works contributed to the compilation, development, and preservation of the Arabic language across different periods. The study focuses on prominent figures such as Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad with Kitab al-‘Ayn, Fairuzabadi with Al-Qamus al-Muhit, and Ibn Manzur with Lisan al-Arab. Employing a qualitative approach with library research as its primary method, this research collects data from classical dictionaries, relevant scholarly books, and academic articles. This approach enables an in-depth analysis of lexicographers’ contributions in terms of methodology, systematization, and linguistic enrichment. The findings reveal that these lexicographers not only pioneered the organization of Arabic lexicons but also provided foundational systems that influenced subsequent dictionary compilers. Their methods, although varied, maintained rigorous analysis of meanings and usages, thereby establishing a strong tradition in Arabic lexicography. The contribution of their works lies not only in enriching Arabic vocabulary but also in preserving the language as a cultural and intellectual heritage. This study contributes to a better understanding of the historical and linguistic significance of Arabic-Arabic dictionaries.

Abstract

The development of speaking skills (maharah al-kalam) in Arabic is a crucial component of effective communication and successful language acquisition. However, in many educational settings, including SMP Islam Az-Zahra 2 Poligon Palembang, traditional instructional approaches have limited students’ opportunities to actively practice speaking, relying heavily on grammar-translation methods. This study aims to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the Auto Drill Ngomong Arab Sehari-Hari textbook in enhancing students’ Arabic speaking skills. Specifically, the study addresses three key objectives: (1) to assess the state of Arabic language instruction prior to the textbook’s implementation, (2) to examine the changes in teaching and learning practices following its adoption, and (3) to measure the effectiveness of the textbook in improving students’ speaking proficiency. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative data from classroom observations, teacher and student interviews, and document analysis with quantitative data from pre-test and post-test scores. Findings indicate a notable shift toward more interactive and student-centered learning after the textbook's introduction. Quantitatively, students' average speaking performance improved by 29.57 points, indicating a substantial enhancement in their oral proficiency. This study concludes that the Auto Drill Ngomong Arab Sehari-Hari textbook is an effective and practical tool for developing maharah al-kalam, especially in secondary-level Arabic instruction. Its structured, context-based drills provide learners with meaningful opportunities for practice, ultimately contributing to improved communicative competence. These findings have implications for curriculum development, suggesting that targeted drill-based resources can significantly improve language learning outcomes.
